First Thornlie WABA for me in a while. Lots of new to me faces, and lots of new games!

To open, I taught this new Stefan Feld game to Ian, Tegan, Jacob and Amy. It was my first play too, but I had read the rulebook a couple of times, and had a pretty good idea of what was going on

Anyway, it is on the lighter side of games from Feld, and combined a few familiar mechanics, but in the end, I thought it felt like it's own game.

Some similarities to Notre Dame and Bora Bora.

You play cards (with an interesting drafting system at the start of each round) and play them to take the available actions each round. The more of a type of card you play, the more of that action you can take.

There's a bit of area majority thrown in, but you can also control the amount of points areas score.

It didn't really click with me just what I was meant to be doing till about halfway through the game. Amy well and truly thrashed us in the end.

Then I taught this to the same group - One of my very favourite games from last year.

Players are all constructing a train-line up the mountain Snowdonia. It's worker placement, but it's a bit more in your face than most, as you are all building the same thing, and resources are very limited.

Tegan won.

(Also, it's currently up on Kickstarter for a second edition, if you are interested - see the WABA Kickstarter geeklist if you want to be part of the group order and get a cheaper copy.)

After dinner I taught Ian and Tegan (And reminded Jacob) this Martin Wallace game.

Silly, somewhat random, but quick and fun, I always enjoy this game.

Ian came very close to victory, but I sneakily got nine spies onto the board as Lord Vetinari and won the game.

Then Terry, in his quest to play the unplayed Martin Wallace games in his collection, taught Jason, Rudolph, Oliver and myself this heavy-ish economic game.

I was very surprised at how easily explained it was, and how quickly this game played. It was two hours, with teaching, but it really didn't feel it - Even when the smarter people at the table were doing lots of maths and trying to actually plan ahead.

I came dead last, but I made some profit, so that's got to count for something, right?

I believe Terry won.

Love to play this again soon.

Finally Ian taught Jason, Terry, Tegan and I this fun dungeon crawl/dexterity game. Each player is a character represented by a disc which is flicked at the enemy discs, played by a dungeon master.

We managed to win in the end, but not before Ian wiped out Tegan and myself.

A fun game, probably kept out of the limelight a bit by it's pretty average (and in some places, downright ugly) graphics.

Played a 3 player game with Opals and Ernest.

Ernest and I were thrashed by Opals, who made an almost perfect farm. Shamefully, she forgot to nab some cows, which gave her a -1 penalty in the final scoring!!! This was our only solace because she got something like 43 points all up. I believe this is the new high score!

Ian taught me the ropes on this one! Despite my almighty ravager of the deep causing much grief (to both of us), I just couldn't find an answer to Ian's blasphemous combination of Y'Golonac, the Military Advisor, and Shub-Nigguruth (the all mother herself).

As such, much insanity was caused, and Ian won convincingly with three story cards to my one.

This was my first ever experience of a LCG style game, and I quite liked it! Though it is hard not to like a game with a monster called a SLAVERING GUG!

First up David, Patrice, Benjamin and I picked Valdora and, as none of us had played it before, we nutted it out together. It was fairly easy to learn, and soon we were roaming the streets of the valley, throwing gems in our backpacks. I think we all agreed that, although it was quick to pick up, it was a game that would also reward multiple plays as you learn how to optimize movement around the board and get the most out of the actions. Some of the components are quite natty, especially the gems and the coins, which make a satisfying clinking sound – if only you have enough of them!

Next up, David taught us Ra. This is the first bidding game we have played and I liked the way it went together with set collection, especially where tiles would come out for auction that could hurt some player’s collections. There were plenty of difficult decisions to make along the way.

The only disappointment of the night. Game seemed too tight with 4 players. Many turns went by with nothing to do other than default and take one gold. Also, ridiculously unbalanced cards, some worth nothing, some game changing. No thanks, but if you want to try it, ONLY play with an odd number of players, to give you more options.

Fun light card game of team management.

Can't remember who won, all I remember was making commentator comments like:
"the ball is fumbled into the mid-field and ... oh my god, that chaos warrior has just taken out the linebacker. But wait, here comes the thrower who takes the ball into the endzone. Wait a second, he was cheating! .... etc etc.

Good for the right crowd.

Game with Ernest, Natasha, Owain, Nathan and I.

Both the President and Admiral were cylons but only after the sleeper phase so the Cylons had their work cut out for them. I revealed soon after sleeper in order to try to attack the human's seemingly awesome lead.

In the end, it came down to 1 fuel left and my fellow Cylon (ex-President Tory) picking 2 damage markers for Galactica and getting the fuel.

I was certain it was a human win but was pleasantly surprised to win in the end, but only just.

Started a game in the lead up to dinner time with 4 imperial characters embarking on some roll and move malarkey.

After many rounds had passed, the four intrepid warriors/travellers were finding that the game was impeding on time that actual "real boardgames" could be getting played.

A lascivious FFG amalgamation of Talisman and the Warhammer 40K universe. A sure fire hit for fans of BOTH of these properties. For non-fans of the former (me post-age 16), it is just more of the same, although admittedly it is a definite improvement with additions that provide a more interesting game experience.

After 2 plays this one is now sitting firmly in the "Yup, I have played that one...what, you want to play it now?", "Isn't there something else you would rather play?", category
