New list is up and right on time this time!

School will be starting soon for me, but we can all hope some great games are played.

The idea behind these lists is to load what you're currently playing, or just played. It's interesting to see who's playing what, to see if people are playing the same things, and to ask questions that might otherwise be relegated to a forum about a game with the benefit of the responses coming from someone who has it fresh on their mind.

Here's last month's list: What We're Playing - July 2013 Edition

Totally living up to the hype in our opinion. We've been playing this every chance we get. I love the game play, and the game board lay-outs. It's so elegant and shiny. Plus, the rule book is impeccable (something I'm much pickier about than I used to be).

Fri, Aug 2

A newer friend of ours owns MEQ but to date, had only been able to play it solo. Darin and I had played a couple times with other friends, so we offered to teach it to him.

It was a pretty close game. We were tied for dominance when we hit the finale, but only Sauron (Darin) had completed his mission so he won.

Played a lot of games this weekend! 2 on Saturday and 4 on Sunday.

So first off on Saturday we played De Vulgari Eloquentia. Here's my full session report. In a nutshell, it was hard to get started, but once we started on our respective paths it got a lot easier to make decisions. It was a very tense game. We both thought my husband was going to win, but I squeaked ahead by 1 point. Just showed us that it's not over until the end. So we're really happy we got this one. It's a good game. Not great and it's not in my top ten yet, but it was definitely worth getting discounted if you like heavy euros.

Next on Saturday, we played Villagers & Villains which is the third game we got from our HERO versus GUARDIAN: A Game of Dungeon Craft Kickstarter pledge. It was a lot of fun! Here's my session report. Definitely a light game and very glad we chose to go with the advanced rules because it offered us the level of strategy we want from all games we play. I could see playing the game with non-gamers or kids without the advanced rules, but it would be boring for most gamers. Anyway,it's a fun town building game where you have to fend off attacks while you build up your town. Whoever gets to 10 cards in their town first, ends the game, but doesn't necessarily win. I'm happy to say, I won this game because I managed the bad challenges better and just rolled better than he did. I won 22 to his 14. So overall, I am very happy that we pledged for all three games from the Kickstarter campaign. I'm still not sure how I feel about Dungeon Craft, but the other 2 games have been great light games.

We played this second on Sunday and added in the expansion. It definitely adds a bit more strategy, but not much. This remains a very light, chaotic and random game, which is a bit hard for me to play. It was really hard for me to let go of strategy and just play cards without over-thinking things. It took me a few rounds, but I finally was able to and managed to just sneak in a win. A very lucky win in that if I hadn't succeeded on my dice rolls, my husband would have won next turn. This may be the only dice-deciding game that I actually enjoy. I am looking forward to playing again.

Third game of the night on Sunday. This is my third time playing the game and sadly, I still hate it. I was really hoping I'd like this game the more I play it but each time just reinforces how much I don't like the dice deciding my fate. And it seems that I keep messing up the few choices I do have in the game. Good thing we got this discounted, but now I need to find someone to trade this with as I do not want to play this again.

The final game of the night. Bless my dear husband. I was going to go to bed all grumpy, but he suggested one more game to lighten my spirits - Love Letter. I was up for that so we pulled it out and started playing. Almost immediately, we had a question on one of the cards that we had never encountered before. So I looked it up and while reading I realized that all the times we'd played so far, we were playing it wrong! Now, we had been taught this game by someone else and it seemed so simple that when we bought a copy, we didn't read the rules. Apparently, we've been playing the hard way with all the cards discarded stacked in one discard pile so you can only see the top card. Also, when playing 2-player, we kept all 4 cards out of the game face-down. I was so shocked to find that the game is supposed to be much easier than that! surprise shake Just goes to show that you should always read the rules for yourself.

Anyway, once we started playing it the right way, we found we enjoyed it even more. I mean, we enjoyed the challenge of the hard mode, but this was even better. And I won 7 to his 5. So needless to say, I went to be very happy having played a full weekend of gaming and ready to tackle the work week.

This afternoon we played with half Guilds and half Prosperity, but we did it random. We didn't get any action cards that gave 2 actions so we were stifled the whole game. But my husband managed it better than me and won 39 to my 31 one points.

Next time, we'll pick cards because this combo should rock and be a high money and highs coring game.

Last night, I didn't think I'd be up for it, but since we got Drum Roll in the mail, we just couldn't resist opening it up and playing it! I sort of regret doing it because I was dead tired at the end, but somehow I managed to win 51 to my husband's 46. The game is so much fun! Highly thematic! We had a lot of fun in each show making announcer voices as we introduced each performer. My husband did a much better job and had me laughing hard at the funny names and stories he was giving everyone. I really love that there are so many ways to earn prestige points. I honestly though my husband was doing better than me for most of the game, but I got lucky with the investment cards. If I hadn't had the ones I had at the end, we would have tied and my husband would have won because he had more money. But I got lucky in drawing end game cards that gave me points for things I had. While this is a euro-style game, it does have a lot of randomness in the cards so it can be frustrating at times. But it's balanced by there being so many things you can do and build on that you just need to shift your strategies if something isn't coming up for you. We played with all the extra promos except the Ringmaster expansion. We'll add that in next time.

Hey everyone! I've been lost in time and space!

Well, ok, I've been lost on vacation and then dealing with problems at home. Water heater burst. But it went about as smoothly as it could. And the vacation was awesome.

Part of the vacation was a game con, so I've got a LOT of games to fill in here. Maybe I'll just hit the highlights. I did a whole geeklist about it here.

Time N' Space was the first real game we played at the con. We liked Space Dealer so were eager to try this. It's a really fun game, if you enjoy real-time. I think they have improved the mechanics and made it flow more smoothly. However, I do think it lost some of the charm of Space Dealer, which had better graphics and more interesting upgrades.

We played Dungeon Roll during lunch. It's fun, but it's really a solo game. It can be fun with one other person, but for me and my husband we'd have just as much fun playing it cooperatively as competitively. I'd never play this with my friends. It'd be something to bring out when playing a player elimination game so someone eliminated will have something fun to do while waiting.

I kinda of wish I had pledged for a second copy so I could keep it in my desk at work.

I'm back from Spain again!

When in Spain I visited a gamestore in Barcelona and bought this little game as a souvenir. Played it three times since.

You know the party/reaction games where you have to hit the card as soon as you see a common element (like Spot it!). This works with the same principle, but you actually have to puzzle and search before you find the tile you have to hit/point out.

It's actually a really nice game (though very simple and luckbased). Most fun part is the fact that some cycling-elements can really be found in the gameplay.

From the same designer as Love Letter and also consists of 16 cards. It's played completely different, though deduction also plays a main part in this game.

For now I think I'm enjoying Love Letter more, but this is also suitable to decide who will be starting player.
