Back for a third time I have put together, just for fun, a list of the Top 25 'Most Popular' Designers on BGG.

Find the past two years here;

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/150913/top-25-designer...

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/75691/top-25-designers...

I used a system that awards 250 points for having designed the number 1 game and 1 point for having designed the number 250 game.

1. Board Game Designer: Martin Wallace
Board Game Designer: Martin Wallace
Martin Wallace continues to hold first place for the third year in a row and he still has eleven games in the Top 250. His main rival has slipped away over the past two years but the field is catching him.

Brass and his railway trilogy are still in the Top 50, A Few Acres of Snow has slipped to outside the top 100 but a strong body of work keeps him clear. He can hardly be said to be slacking but his only release from the past two years which looks like it might make an impact is A Study in Emerald.

Once again Martin Wallace holds the crown.

2. Board Game Designer: Reiner Knizia
Board Game Designer: Reiner Knizia
When I first did this in 2011 Martin Wallace and Reiner Knizia had twice the number of points of any other designer. Reiner Knizia will not be in the top two next year if current trends continue. He has gone from seventeen games in the top 250 to eleven. A count any other designer would give his eye dice for but a fall for the once untouchable. Three games in the top 100, including Samurai at 100. Newest release in the top 250 is Ingenious from 2004. Nothing from the past three years has broken the top 1000. I have to stop, it is all too depressing.

3. Board Game Designer: Vlaada Chvátil
Board Game Designer: Vlaada Chvátil
Leading the strong chasing pack for the second year in a row is Vlaada Chvatl. Through the Ages and Mage Knight sit in the top ten and he has three more games in the top 100 and one, Dungeon Petz, sitting just outside. Those six games are holding their rankings very well, boosted by a lot of expansions. Tash-Kalar might just scrape into the top 250 next year but it doesn't look at the moment like it will have the same impact. He is benefitting from the greater spread of game designers making games and the relative slide of other designer's releases.

4. Board Game Designer: Corey Konieczka
Board Game Designer: Corey Konieczka
The top talent at FFG, all of his top 250 games are from the past five years with the oldest, BSG, also being the highest ranked. Credits for X-Wing and Descent 2 from 2012 also give him a kick back up to 4th and he is right behind Vlaada. Eldritch Horror will score him points next year. Will he be the man to break up the top two?

Former FFG stable man who had seven designs from them in the top 250 including both versions of Descent, the reworking of Cosmic Encounter and Arkham Horror. Slightly quieter year this time around but we shall see what 2014 and Abyss brings.

6. Board Game Designer: Stefan Feld
Board Game Designer: Stefan Feld
Now I bet you all thought Stefan Feld would be right up there this year given that he seems to release a game every second week. He is still rising and he may have the best propects of anyone on the list. Castles of Burgundy has continued to slowly rise to number 12 from 23 this time last year. Bora Bora is the second ranked 2013 release behind Pathfinder Adventure Card Game. Bruges is right on the brink and will score next year. Rialto might not make it but Amerigo has a good chance. Building up a constant flow of hits which could see him right at the top given time. He currently has seven games in the top 250 and rising.

7. Board Game Designer: Uwe Rosenberg
Board Game: Agricola
Agricola, Le Havre and Ora et Labora all sit inside the top 25. Three more games in the top 250. His heavy Euro assault on our brains show no signs of abating with Caverna already about to smash into the top 250 and keep rising. He also scores with All Creatures and Bohnanza which shows he has a lighter side too. The last of what shows in the scoring as a bit of a clear top seven.

Four versions of Ticket to Ride are inside the Top 250. If expansions counted it might be more. Seriously successful gaming franchise. Airlines Europe and Union Pacific also register. San Marco has sadly slipped away. I am sure all the $$$ will make up for that.

Board Game Designer: Christian T. Petersen
A slide down the rankings for Mr Petersen as Tide of Iron and AGoT:LCG slide away. Strong positions for both version of A Game of Thrones and Twilight Imperium III keep him in the top ten along with Starcraft and Middle Earth Quest. Warhammer: Diskwars (???) was his only release this year.

Last year Netrunner had shot up the rankings and no expansion was available yet. How times have changed, it is now our number five game and I seem to trip over expansions every day. King of Tokyo has surged another fifty odd places and Magic is still top 150 material. Not sure Ghooost will make the five thousand odd places climb to register next year. Come back king.

C&C, Memoir '44 and Battlelore. All different takes on one highly successful system. 2012 release Samurai Battles has a high average but not enough ratings to threaten. I can only imagine that Battlelore 2 is going to push him upwards next year.

Board Game Designer: Wolfgang Kramer
Wolfgang Kramer has seen almost half of his top 250 games slide away in the past two years. El Grande and Princes of Florence still sit high in the top 250 but he has nothing from after 2000 in there. Twenty four games in the top 1000 though and Coal Baron on the rise but not looking to get to the top. Consistently makes solid games.

Three games sitting between number 50 and 100. All rondel games; Navegador and the two Imperials. I asked last year if we would see something different and we have, Concordia changed things up and will score him points next year. Antike Duellum never did get enough owners to move up high.

Dominant Species and two Combat Commander games ride high in the rankings. He had two games out in 2012, Urban Sprawl and Fighting Formations, which sit just outside the top 500. We await his next major hit. I feel like giving him extra points for updating his photo.

The highest new entry this year and it is no surprise, in fact it was a surprise he didn't make it before now. 7 Wonders is in the top twenty, Hanabi is rising after the SdJ win and Ghost Stories and Takenoko also sit in the top 250. Not sure Rampage or Little Prince are going to have high enough ratings to help him next year but the hot new name on the block.

Yup, still number one with Twilight Struggle, he might need a new 'I Designed the Best Game in the World' t-shirt after this long. 1960 is in the top 100 and 1989 has a cracking average rating which means it hit the top 175 despite low number of ratings and pushes Mr Matthews up the rankings. A man who regularly updates his photo, nice work.

Family: Dominion
Two versions of Dominion sit inside the top 20 but Kingdom Builder was not the ratings success it once looked like being as is outside the top 250. Follow up success proving to be elusive but maybe it will appear now that the last Dominion expansion is out the door. Top marks for consistency in these lists though.

also Marco Maggi and Francesco Nepitello.

The War of the Rings team balance the loss of the Collectors Edition as an entry against the release of the 2nd Edition. With Battle of 5 Armies coming soon and adapting the WotR system to a smaller scale they could be leaping up the ratings next year.

Our second new entry is the new man on the FFG block. Credits for the top 50 X-Wing and Descent 2 are enough to see him on the list. Looks like he is knee deep in Descent expansions so we will have to see what the future holds.
