Pete and I kicked off the day with BattleLore. This has quickly become one of my favourite games and has easily booted Memoir 44 off of my wishlist because of it's slightly added complexity, fantastical theme and more interesting tactical choices.

I thought I had this in the bag with a slight lead and my VP ticking over at the same rate as Pete but he pushed me out of a scoring position and took it himself to run over me by 4 or 5 points.

Next up Pete and I had a 2p game of Glory to Rome while we waited to join a bigger group. This has also become another favourite in the recent months. I'd never played it with just 2 before so I was keen to see how it would go.

My opening hand had the Catacombs which gives 3 VP and ends the game when it's built so I decided to see if I could rush the victory. Unfortunately getting the required materials can be a little tough so early in the game unless you happen to also have the Road which I was lucky to draw just a couple turns in. It was easy to see what I was trying to do so Pete rushed a few buildings to completion but when I finished the Catacombs the game ended with me leading 6-5. Definitely not a typical game but from the few turns we had it seemed to play well with 2.

Played three five player games of this one.

Unbelievably I did not get eliminated in any game and actually won two of the games.

The first is a rarity in almost 20 games, so you can imagine the probablity of the second even happening.

Tegan, Mark and Mal taught me this one and Ian stopped by to give me some guidance.

Had some trouble working out what my goals should be from the range of choices available.

Ian left about halfway through the game and I seemed to get better after that. Nothing to do with Ian going, just my time in the game had made things clearer.

Just a coincidence Ian, making sure I am pointing that out.

Another enthralling and engaging four player game of Long Shot saw Six Gun get over the line ahead of Nine Lives which had led comfortably through out the race.

Rex in Effect motored home in the last stages to sneak into third.

As owner of the horses that came in first and third I narrowly won the game over the mad punter Jason.

I had planned to play this game with Pete (wipz), but he had to miss the meet due to a buck's night.

I have been itching to replay it though, bringing it to the last couple of WABAs and not getting it to the table, and Tegan was running late, so she didn't get to have any input, so I just set it up.

Tim and Peter joined us.

It's a slightly fiddly, but not too heavy pick up and deliver and route building train game. You are small time railway investors, laying tracks and then selling them off to the larger companies when they are less profitable, delivering passengers, mail and beer.

Interestingly, the fiddly part of the game is what really makes it interesting. The bidding on influence cubes, and the four different tracks that measure your influence with four different groups (with politicians, train manufacturers, and the two large companies you sell off your tracks too)

Due to a slight misunderstanding of the way the companies work, and where you can build to and from, the green tracks in the south got blocked off very early.

I played a pretty bad game and ended with very little to do, and not a single green passenger at the end (you want to make sets to score well at the end).

Peter and Tim had a very competitive game in the North, but Tim managed to connect Nuremberg to Fürth with a heck of a lot of his own tracks still on the board, and rocketed away with the game.

I really like this game a lot. Not sure I like it as much with four. It is VERY tight and brutal. Maybe if we had a second game with everyone familiar with the rules it might have been better? (It might have been worse too, as we'd have all been even more competitive?)

Highly recommended as a two player game, but I still enjoyed it with four.

Next up I taught Mal, Pete, Tim, Peter (and reminded Tegan who had played before) this current favourite of mine.

I explained it last in the last Thornlie recap, I think, but basically it's a worker placement game where you are racing to get your stars, which represent your influence, down on the board as quickly as possible.

Lots of resources, unique powers, and group affiliations make the game very interesting and different when you play it.

Instead of using my - I forget what it's called? - Ethical Dilemma card(?) to claim a star, as I always had in the past, I decided to claim a new recruit. I got very lucky and got the recruit which let me sacrifice a worker when I placed a star to place a second star.

And I used that effectively to just win the game. My first win of it too.

Tim was RIGHT behind me, and would have caused a tie had the game gone on much longer, and would have won the tie breaker too.

Great game - Still loving it very much!

Next up I taught Tim (assisted by Pete, who won a copy of it at Decembacon) this fantastic Stefan Feld game. I hadn't played a physical copy in a little bit, mostly playing it online, and I had gotten used to the scoring being automated - luckily Pete was able to pick me up on the couple of rules I had forgotten.

This is a basically themeless, point salad game, which many people would use as an insult, but I absolutely love it.

I was a long way behind the other two for much of the game, but my end game scoring caused me to have a fairly epic comeback, giving me the game. Very exciting (for me at least).

Ian then taught Tim, Pete and I this new game about building a theme park for robots.

The rounds happen in three parts - Everyone rolls dice simultaneously, putting 'locking' the ones they want, and rolling again as quickly as possible and taking the first, second and third player markers, attempting to not get stuck in last place, but also trying to get the dice that allow the actions they want.

Then, in player order, you spend the dice to take the associated actions. Spending them in the right order can be very important for maximizing your score.

Then you collect income and start the next round.

You also have to be careful to not have too dirty a park, as it can lead to a huge penalty at the end of the game. (This happened to me, when I forgot to clean up in the final round)

The production is pretty, the game is light, but fun. In fact, the dice rolling, order setting part of the game is the highlight for sure. I found the building part of the round to be a little bit of a drag with four, but probably that's just because three of us were new.

Would like to play again for sure.

Pete and Ian tied, Ian won the tie breaker.

Finally I taught Tim, Jacob and refreshed Tegan on this fun card game.

Every round dice are rolled, and in player order you choose a dice that dictates the resources/options available to you that round.

Even though I've played about a dozen times before, I've never played with the 'advanced' cards before, and the group wanted to try them, so I added them in, and I think the cards got pretty crazy by the end of the game, with people have to give crystals to other people every time certain actions or events occurred.

The game felt like it ran a bit long too - Which I haven't had happen before. Not sure if it was the advanced cards, new players, or if we were a little fatigued from the days games... It's a fun game in general, though I don't think it shined this play.

I think it was Tim that won in the end.

First game of this one so it took some figuring out. It's one of those games where there are lots of language independent cards that require constant checking of a player aid to work them out, but once we got the hang of that the gameplay was pretty simple (it involves bidding to move the player party around the map, trying to meet secret objectives).

It was a three player game. I'd probably like to try it with more to get the most out of player interaction, but at this stage I'm not too excited to play the game again.

I've played a couple of times before, but this was the first time with some experienced players (5 in total).

Not being so experienced with Battlestar Galactica I can't really comment on the nuances of the game, but apparent we finished really quickly (jump cards were 3,2,3). The final jump brought us down to 1 fuel and all we had to do was make it to the end of the jump track to end the game.

Our President threw me in the brig, then outed herself as a cylon. I lost the role of Admiral, but gained being President. I bade my time, trying to convince everyone I was human (having received a "you are a cylon" card at the halfway mark), and a "President chooses" card came up, allowing me to burn the last fuel, thus winning the game for the cylons.

Now definitely my favourite game. Itching to play again.

I played two games of this, the first was with Pete, Mal and another guy who's name I can't remember. Pete won, despite Mal's constant harassment of his fleet.

The second was with Tim, Jason and Mike. For a good while it was between Jason and Tim, who each had one Quantum cube left (the goal is to be the first to place all of your cubes on the board). Then I realised I was playing against a table of dirty cat lovers, so I dug deep and caught up to claim victory. Yay dogs!
