I've always enjoyed games with standard playing cards, and since I've created several lists with my favorite games, I figured I'd do one for games with traditional cards too.

So here's the list of my favourite traditional games with standard playing cards, arranged alphabetically, and grouped roughly according to their primary suitability for adults or children. At the end of the list I've included a section with books that I own about games with playing cards, and links to some other resources on BGG. For each game I've also listed the suitability according to the number of players. It is worth noting that several games are excellent for just two players.

Although some more recently invented games are included, for the most part the emphasis of this list is on traditional card games that have stood the test of time in some way, so I'm not concerned with using a standard deck to play modern games (for that, see this list). Obviously there are many other games that can be played with a standard deck of cards besides the ones included here. This list is not intended to be exhaustive, but just represents the ones are most well-known, and for the most part games that I have personally tried and enjoyed, or ones that I'm interested in learning.

What do you think of the listed games? Please feel free to comment on the individual entries, and share any experiences you may have had with these particular games. Give some thumbs up to your favourites, and let us know which ones you like the best and why, as well as any other thoughts you may have. Notable omissions or suggestions for others I should try can be made in the general comments underneath the list.

There are some terrific resources online about traditional card games like these, and here are a few helpful links to get you started:

Cribbage

2 players

Classic card name based on card combinations worth points. It's been suggested that the game is half luck, but experienced players will consistently outperform novices. Requires decision making for selecting cards for the crib, and which order to play the cards in hand. Kids enjoy finding the point scoring combinations, and the imbalance/asymmetry of each game turn makes it especially interesting.

Knock Out Whist

2-7 players | suitable for children

Knockout Whist or "Trumps" is a simplified version of Whist, where the aim is to avoid elimination after a hand. Fun to play with children, to introduce them to trick-taking. Given some rule variations that exist, I'm still trying to figure out the best way to play the dog's life and the order of leading hands.

Le Truc

2 players

An out of the ordinary betting/bluffing/trick-taking game recommended by David Parlett and included in Sid Sackson's "Gamut of Games". A 19th century game using a French 32 card deck. Very similar to the English Put, but more developed. Also playable in two-player partnerships.

Note: there are several rule variations. The Wikipedia description reflects the rules described by Sid Sackson, which differ slightly from Parlett/McLeod. See this poll for an overview.

Oh Hell!

3-7 players

Goes under many names, including Up and Down the River, Bust, and some less savoury titles. A great trick taking game where you bid how many tricks you can win. The hand size increases each round, from one card, to two, etc. Numerous scoring variants exist. The game enables considerable skill, because even with bad cards you score if you bid correctly. Wizard is a commercial variant, as is BidWiz.
