This was the first WABA Mt Claremont meet with the new times of 1.00pm to 10.00pm. The new times didn't seem to deter people as we again had people both new and regular come to play some great games. See what got to the table, and if you went, add what you played.

WABA's guild can be found here.
The metalist of WABA games played can be found here.

Richard and I taught Craig this light game. Playing people escaping a prison through a tunnel, players play cards to move their meeple forward and move their meeple back to gain more cards. A very light, simple game, I managed to win over Richard and Craig.

Karl kindly taught this Biblically based area control, war-gamish game. Set in the time of the northern and southern kingdoms of Isreal with surrounding enemies, two teams of the Hebrews and Heathens battled for area and points.

Karl has to be given much credit for expertly going through the rules and concepts that we had to get our head around. It didn't help that we ended up with 6 players, not only increasing the numbers who were trying to learn but also effectively making it two teams of three seeking a winning team and a winner amongst the winner team. Having 6 meant that downtime between turns could be large (which actually worked out well as this gave Richard and I time to wander around and assist new people, including tag-teaming teaching SmallWorld).

With the game split into 3 distinct sections, we decided to call it after playing two thirds as Karl and Daniel had to leave, with turns becoming much quicker once we got a handle of what to do. To Richard and my surprise, it was very close at this stage (we both thinking that the Hebrews were well ahead). The Hebrews were leading 122 (Daniel 50, Kylie 40 and Karl 32) over the Heathens 117 (Sandy 43, Ernest 38 and Richard 36).

For a first play, it wasn't too bad. I think 6 players is too many for this game, 4 would be better and that an odd number of players much less fun than even numbers.

No, I did not start playing this game! However, I did substitute in after one player had to leave - it would have been a real shame to have the entire (although this meant that I didn't get to play Goldbräu, a game I'd been trying to play for months )

This was a 4 player game (Admiral Hoshi, President Adama Jnr (alternate), Costanza and Baltar (alternate)) with base Daybreak going to Earth. As I understand it, Admiral Hoshi revealed quite early and I substituted for the revealed cylon at about distance 7 or 8. Despite several dials being low in the red, the humans managed to jump to 10 distance and reach Earth.

I think the revelaed cylon could have pushed harder at some earlier points when civilian ships were heavily threatened by raiders, bad previous die rolls to be ignored, but it is easy to say that in hindsight.

I think the players were Natasha, Owain, the owner and the other player (sorry I don't remember your names!).

As I did not start playing this game, I will not count it as me having played it for my stats purposes.

I saw 3 games of this being played. In the first, Grug taught Peter and both of them, Tegan and myself battled to have a winner I can't remember (which probably means it wasn't me). In the second game, we were joined by Ian and Mal for a 6 player game in which Tegan assassinated me for the win in what was a very enjoyable session. I stepped out and I think the rest played a 5 player game.

It would not surprise me if this game was played at other times throughout the day.

Richard, Priya and I had a great play of Love Letter, with all of us one away of winning going into the last round. I was eliminated first in that last round, and Priya managed to beat Richard to take out the entire game. Notable in this game was the length of time taken for a successful guard guess and that for much of the game we each won rounds evenly.

Ian, Tegan, Pete and I sat down to the new rondel-less Gerdts game.

Once we got rolling, the game is very smooth and easy to play. Great choices and available strategies.

It's loosely a deck-building game, with resource management and a few other mechanisms. Nothing groundbreaking, but I like this new loser take on deck-building that has been happening lately. (Rokoko is similar as well, though a very different game)

This was probably my favourite game of the day. I think it was Pete that won?

I can't wait to play again.

Mal, Tegan, Ian and I broke out this new, meaty game that, thematically, is meant to be an exploration, farming and city building game... Well, I guess so. I'm not sure any of the theme shows through in this game, but it's fantastic all the same.

Tim, Mark and Pete played the game simultaneously at another table.

It's not too hard a game to grasp, but perhaps it is the lack of obvious theme that makes it a little hard to teach/learn at first? I was the only new player at the table, but everyone made mistakes or forgot rules at some point in the game.

If I had a knock against the game, it's that it's so long. I liked playing it, but know I wouldn't get it to the table too often. Would play it again for sure.

Who won in the end? I've forgotten? Ian I think? Did I come in second? I think I came in second.

We needed something lighter after Madeira (My copy of Prêt-à-Porter stayed in the tub this week) so we played a five player game of this new Rudiger Dorn design. Ian, Tegan, Mal, Pete and I were competing merchants racing around Istanbul trying to trade for rubies as quickly as possible.

It was a pretty close game, but it was Mal that got there first. Pete, Ian and I all had four of the five needed at the end of the game, I think.

One of the lighter Feld games, myself Peter and Tegan played a great game of this. Great because I won, but also great because I had previously never seen anyone score as high as we had - All five of us passed 50.

I got a couple of amazing cards early - One let me always do 'instant' effect cards twice, and I am pretty sure that basically won me the game. I later got the assassin, and with the previous card that meant I got to kill TWO of everyone else's characters, which is pretty devastating.

Tim, Peter, Tegan and I played this silly dice game. It's meant to be about making worms, raccoons, wasps, quails, cockroaches and weasels into sausages, but really you are just trying to collect combinations of dice.

Very silly.

I pushed my luck early, trying to get the fours sausages, and failed, putting me behind and I never managed to catch back up.

Tim was able to play conservatively because no one else managed to get anything worthwhile, and won pretty easily.

The game was interesting as each of us focused on quite separate tactics.

In the end, I won on 57, Jacob was second with 52, then Peter, flayne and Maggie

Just myself and Ian for this one. I took a military strategy with my starting world and most of my card draws complemented that nicely with a few big scoring worlds and developments. Ian ended it with 12 cards in his tableau as I was about to go on a consume/produce rampage. I won by about 10 with a final score in the mid-40s.

Greg (Carthaginians) and Steve (Romans) played the scenario for the 2nd Battle of Beneventum (214 BC). Historically, it was a Roman victory.

Initially, most of the action took place on the Carthaginian left, with their elephants actually putting in a pretty good effort, rather than go belly up after the first engagement.

The Romans issued multiple line commands to advance in a solid line, causing nervousness in the Carth ranks. Still, Carth light troops produced some handy attrition with their arrows and spears.

Roman Consul Gracchus sent his slave soldiers forward in the centre, resulting in a wild melee between medium troops, laying waste to either side. Carths were able to offer a spirited riposte, capped off by a well aimed spear that took down a Roman leader between the eyes.

Despite a late Roman rally, the Carthaginian centre directly under Mago’s command was able to sweep aside the Roman defenders, their triumph complete when Gracchus himself was taken prisoner.

On to Rome!

Dean, Steve, Warren and myself played two games of Condottiere. In the first game, Warren’s power to mesmerise us with his wily propaganda paid dividends, dominating Italy without any great trouble.

The second contest turned into a real epic, with all of us scoring victories to the point where most provinces were under control and ultimate victory could swing toward any one of us. Steve became the 'key master', bringing two battles to an end without result (tied leaders) in a row by playing key cards. Eventually, the choice of the location for the next battle fell to me.

Not particularly hopeful, I decided to go for broke and chose the one province available that would allow me to win. This space would also deliver victory to Warren.

A 4-way battle became 3-way as Dean withdrew, expecting Steve to carry all before him and exhaust the other players, so that he could have an easy time of it. But before long, Steve withdrew too, leaving Warren and I to duke it out for ultimate glory.

Play of scarecrow cards by both sides extended the battle - and raised the suspense - but thanks to a solid mercernary army with its morale raised by drummers, I was able to ultimately snatch victory.

Whatever the result, our second game showed Condottiere at its cracking best, combining loads of fun with devious card play. What more could you ask for?
