A massive turn up of people (85+?), Thornlie's biggest ever, ensured the room kept warm throughout the day.

Here, if poeple add them, is what they played.

This is the WABA guild page.

The meta-list will be along later.

My gawd what an awful game...Steve, Jasmine and Ethan finished the night with this one. Might have been a little late in the day to truly get into it...

I played in two consecutive six five player games of this one.

An interesting thing to note was that the first game came down to a battle between two players, Siobahn and Mark (who I think emerged as the victor).

In the scond game they were the first two eliminated. Over confidence is a seemingly dangerous thing.

7. Board Game: Cheaty Mages! [Average Rating:6.29 Overall Rank:2432]
Played a five player game at the suggestion of Tim Tryhorn (thanks Tim!), with Warren, Wez, Siobahn, and Mark. The components were still in shrink and minty fresh, so we got to take this copy on its inaugural gaming voyage. I think it was the first time for all of us, but we didn't have too many problems muddling our way through the rules.

As I recall, at the game end three of us were tied on points, and the tie-breaker awarded the tie to Wez and me, who "rejoiced in our shared victory", since we had one more card in hand than Siobahn. A play worthy of note was the final round for Warren - he was in dead last at that point, if I remember correctly, and gambled by placing a single bet which came off rather gloriously, earning double points, and took him to only a point or two behind the winners.

I enjoyed this game quite a bit. The mechanisms are quite streamlined and easy to learn, and there's interesting elements where you're working together with other players as well as against them. The elements of betting work well, and because some cards are placed face down there's some nice potential for bluffing.

8. Board Game: COGZ [Average Rating:7.06 Overall Rank:4750]
Designer Wez showed a prototype of his game COGZ, which is coming out on Kickstarter soon. A four player game included Wez, Oliver, and Mark. A metagame of "beat-the-designer" soon developed, after Oliver told us that Wez has a rather impressive win/loss record with his own game. Despite our best attempts (and an impressive last turn with extra actions from Oliver), Wez preserved his winning streak by winning with 12 points, just ahead of Oliver on 11, with the rest of the field on 9 and 8 points.

COGZ is an interesting and thoughtful abstract with some interesting and thematic mechanics that I enjoyed quite a bit - I hope Wez is successful in getting this published!

My fiancé (Aloishe) and I were setting up for a game when Steve arrived. He joined us for the first round playing the 2nd scenario in the base set adventure. Steve had not played the game before.

The game was going well and we were making good progress, however the henchmen were deep in the location decks and took a lot of digging out. The blessing deck is an inbuilt time bomb on the game which essentially only allows for 30 turns or less. Due to the fact that it was taking many turns to dig the henchmen out the blessing deck was nearly empty as we closed the villain down into the last 2 locations.

We counted the cards in the blessing deck and came to the horrific realization that we only had 4 turns to complete the scenario. Lucky for us we were prepared with enough cards that allowed us to dig further through the location decks. This allowed us to close all the locations except for the last location that the villain had fled to earlier in the game.

By the time the villain had been closed to a single location and we drew him out from his final hiding place. Aloishe drew the very last card from the blessing card deck and managed to draw and defeat the villain with a giant fist full of dice that sprawled across the table.

For the last two games we were joined by Geoff/Jeff (not so sure on the spelling) who had played the game before. We played the final scenario of the base game. The heroes managed to acquire a second win in this game and Steve learnt an important lesson on how if you discard a boon that the runelords will make sure that the next bane you draw will require the boon you just discarded

We then proceeded to crack open the first rise of the runelords adventure path deck and tackle the first scenario. By this time Steve had a firm grasp on the important rules of the game and we were playing well as a team. We managed to pick up a couple useful cards from the new deck and seal a third victory.

I really enjoy this game and I highly recommend doing it to anyone who is this thinking about biting the bullet. The online play-throughs on YouTube make the game seam a bit stale, it's one of those games that need to be played to be appreciated properly. If anyone would like to learn to play it I would be more than happy to teach.

Got Oliver and Li-hua in on this one.

We blazed through the game fairly quickly with Oliver devoting much of his family resources to travel, and Li-hua dominating the market.

I managed to sneak in a victory by winning the final mass.

Good fun!

Played with four. I skimmed over the rules (getting numerous wrong), but the players were awesome and forgiving of my sad attempt to explain the game. Everyone got the hang of swooping in and snapping up unclaimed victory points, and planning their Action Points for maximum profit.

Looking forward to playing again, with everyone knowing how to play from the start this time. Although, I'm not sure I would enjoy caving with this bunch in real life...they are a bit too fond of jumping out from behind stalactites and stealing the choice photo opportunities!

Two games played in succession with six players.

I think this game should be renamed "However you try to win, someone else will get what you want."

An enjoyable game with a definite smattering of "I want to do that exact thing you just stopped me from doing".

Two of us had a prior play, and thus had a distinct advantage over the other two on their first play through, but they did exceedingly well and the scores were pretty close at the end.

I still love that you get victory points for throwing one of your own workers into the core of the earth.
