With Mal, Tegan and Pete all being no-shows, most of my planned games went out the window.

I did manage to get this excellent game to the table for only the second time (And the first with all of the rules right). I taught Tim K, and refreshed Ian's memory, and then we were joined by Stephen, who had only played online so far.

It's a worker placement with three train tracks to build and an industry track to move up. It has a lot of pieces to keep track of, but it's not too difficult to learn. And it was an excellent game, I managed to pull ahead right at the end thanks to a lot of scoring off the Engineers that I had collected.

Then Ian taught the new game from the designer of Glory to Rome and Innovation to Tim and I. It has a similar feel to Glory to Rome, but with a space theme and a board adding spacial elements. I really liked the 'impulse' mechanic. I didn't feel like I was very good at the game, but would imagine it gets better with more plays. Like all his games do.

Ian won, pretty handily.

Then Ian taught Tim this fantastic card game. After learning this in the last couple of weeks, we have already played it four times - Pretty rare for me at least. I'm loving it a lot.

It's a sort of post-apocalypse style game with factions where you build a tableau of cards that grant different actions. Each card can be used in multiple ways. Some criticize it for being a bit fiddly with all of the different tokens, but it's really pretty straight forward once you get the icons locked down.

When a played hits thirty points, the game ends and high score wins.

We played twice.

The first game Tim and I tied and I won the tiebreaker by have the most cards in my hand.

In the second game, it was a three-way tie! Ian too the tiebreaker.

Incredible!

Then I taught Tim this game, a favourite of Ian and I (even though I rarely win).

Take tiles and place them in your village to activate it and all adjacent tiles. Convert things to points.

This game moves so fast, and is a pretty tense competition.

Unfortunately for Tim, I pretty much (accidentally) gave Ian the game in the last round. I took the move that was best for me, but it really left Ian open for a massive end game combo that doubled his score AND blocked Tim out of a final move.

Sorry Tim!

Finally we finished the day with two plays of Wurfelwurst (sausage dice).

It is such a silly light game, and yet it is impossible not to get worked up about it!

You score the lowest number you rolled, multiplied by the number of an animal type you are scoring. However, if instead of numbers you roll four sausages you get seven times the animal. If you get any number of sausages less than four, you only get one times the number.

So going for sausages is somewhat risky, but when it pays off, it really pays off.

In the first game both Tim and I managed to get at least half of or rolls with four sausages. This is very rare! A very high scoring game. (I won't mention the bad luck Ian was having though). I managed a close win over Tim.

Int he second game we were joined by Amy, who stole my luck and I started rolling more like Ian. Amy won with maybe the highest score I've seen in the game.

We were ambushed on the way in, and force to play this. How ... terrible.

What followed was an epic battle for cont... hang on, that was some other table.

The sun shone, the bamboo grew,
The rain fell, and the wind blew,
The panda ate ... well, not so much, actually.

In the end, our ambusher - who had never played it before - took out both end-game honours and the win, but we had fun getting there!

We set up for a four-a-side battle, but ended up with three full ships of the line on each side duking it out around an island.

The casualties ran high, but superior manoeuvring on the part of the French won the day for them, with two English ships running aground, and the third beating a somewhat battered retreat.

A follow up game with two SotL a side later saw the French side lose one ship as a prize, and the other making a very damaged run from the field, for the cost of one somewhat damaged ship on the English side.

Elaine had never finished a game of this, so we set up and dragged Warren (who had never played at all) in.

Elaine dominated the market builds, only missing one market, and so had a fairly free run in establishing territories.

Warren, meantime, was accumulating Subterranean recruits, and then pushed that faction's marker to the end of the line - scoring him three points in one hit - and the game!

Another new favourite of ours - so pretty, and yet so very dark!

Mark taught this to Maggie and myself in preparation for the tournament.

We played three rounds. Maggie stayed with DeGray while I tested three different decks out.

After running out of cards in hand twice, I opted to take Setsuki (ninja) for the tournament.

In the end, I beat Maggie all three times.

I will let Mark or Ernest make the tournament report

Played a quick couple of games of this at the end of the day with Roger, his great kids, Greg and Steve...it was a good wind down after a marathon session of 'The Kaiser's Pirates'.

I had recently participated in multiple games of the card game known as 'Presidents' ( up to 10 players) which was a riot and this game uses the same basic principles.

I had been hunting around trying to find a copy locally and it was nice to find one in the WABA collection!

Greg, was keen to give this game another outing.

While I like card driven games, the last time I had played this had left me with a feeling of 'meh'. The history wasn't that enthralling and it took forever to get thru a four player game...

This time around Greg, Steve and myself kicked off a three player at 2pm and it became an epic game that lasted for about two and a half hours, saw the German raider 'Emden' ( under Greg's control) enagage in a gunfight with HMAS Sydney under Steve's control( pretty true to history), but escape unscathed ( unhistorical), only to fall to my next British interception....not historical, but very satisfying after it's reign of terror.

My strategy from then on was to attack every exposed German Warship and raider, hoping to whack them on a lucky die roll....my plan seemed to work and I ended up winning the game after three rounds. I managed to avoid the same fate for German ships under my control by playing an "island" card, which sent my warship off to hide on an exotic island paradise, while the other players searched in vain for it...

The game appears to have a deeper level of subtelty than first apparent and there were quite a few twists and turns which suggests that this game bears more investigation. The basic premise is about WW1 commerce raiding on he high seas, but the mechanics allow you to control both the German and Allied sides at the same time. The only downside is the length to play a full game...maybe shuffling in a random card to the bottom half of the action deck to represent an early end to a round might speed things up, although we all found that once we had the basic mechnics down, the gameplay speeded up.

Tim's game got a good workout at the meet. I personally played at least 10 games of this during the day. This dexterity game has pieces balanced on a circle board atop a spherical cork ball. The rules/version of the game I played involved 2 players alternately taking pieces off the board, the looser being the one that causes the board to unbalance and fall.

Not only was this game clever and interesting to play, but was visually interesting, drawing people both just walking in the door (as we unintentionally set it up close to there) and people walking around (especially as the pieces crashing down drew attention).

Of course I played and lost one of these, how could I forget.

It has now moved into my top fifteen games played since I started recording them in 2005, with this play tying it with Apples to Apples, Tsuro and Zooloretto.

Strong early effort by Tsuro, has only been played three times since 2010.

We had a Yomi tournament at Mr Claremont!
I had previously taught Jacob, Ernest and Warren how to play. Scott and Maggie learned on the day (see earlier in the list).
Unfortunately we had a couple of no shows (one of them had a pretty good excuse!), but made do with 6 on the day. (Although the tournament software did not do the pairings correctly! I’ve run the results through http://mtgarena.appspot.com/ which seems to be a very good site if you are running a best of 3 swiss tournament).

Characters
Ernest Agargarg
Jacob Rook
Warren Grave
Scott Setsuki
Maggie DeGrey
Mark Valerie

Results
Round 1
Mark vs Jacob Jacob wins 2-1
Scott vs Warren Warren wins 2-1
Maggie vs Ernest Maggie wins 2-0
Round 2
Maggie (3 pts) vs Warren (3 pts) Maggie wins 2-1
Jacob (3 pts) vs Ernest (0 pts) Jacob wins 2-1
Mark (0 pts) vs Scott (0 pts) Scott wins 2-0
Round 3
Maggie (6 pts) vs Jacob (6 pts) Jacob wins 2-1
Scott (3 pts) vs Ernest (0 pts) Ernest wins 2-1
Mark (0 pts) vs Warren (3 pts) Mark wins 2-0

Final Results
Player Pnt OMP GWP OGP
1: Jacob 9 44.44 66.67 47.62
2: Maggie 6 55.56 62.50 47.22

So as you can see Jacob and Maggie did very well, with the rest of us all equal(ly bad).
The final match was a nail biter, coming down to the final battle which Jacob won with only 1 life point remaining! Jacob took home the prize - 2 Yomi decks, so look out for future challenges!
I had a lot of fun, and I think everyone else did too. It was very well suited to a tournament, we got the whole thing finished in about 2 ½ hours I think (pretty good for brand new players). Thanks to those who participated - I’d encourage everyone to get involved in any tournaments we might hold in the future. Once I get the 2nd edition there is a good change I will run something like this again - this time with 20 character to choose from!
(Sorry it’s taken me so long to post this).
