A log of games played by the Advance After Combat Guild. If you would like to participate, log all the games you play (including Vassal, of course) as a comment under each title's entry, and then we'll have a repository of shared gaming experience... AARs! Reviews! Pictures! Impressions! The game you played isn't on the list? Add it! And no need to get all fancy with in depth AARs (unless you want to), but it would be cool to have, at least, scenarios played, opponents, outcomes, and overall impressions.

This KS game arrived yesterday just in time for my weekly FTF session.

We played our 1st game in about 40 minutes and had so much fun we immediately played a 2nd game, which led to a 3rd game which led me to wonder if we'd ever get around to Wing Leader.

The game plays very quickly, and there is little to no downtime, you play a card, opponent plays a card, and it's your turn again.

Lots of bluffing, paranoia and psych out as well. You think your opponent is building up in Italy, so you counter, and then it turns out he really had Cuba as his scoring space.

You are constantly aware of how close you are to starting a nuke shoot out (an auto loss if you do), so you are trying to back down, but every round you are pushed closer to nuke war.

You may end up with cards that help your opponent, but you can't really dump them, even if you play it, opponent has option to play the event for himself. Fortunately, that works both ways, and when you hear him cursing you can guess he has to give you a shot at one of YOUR juicy events.

We played 3 games but every one is different and I don't think we're anywhere near 'perfect play,' lots more to discover here.

Played this on Monday night since Jason ditched me (some lame excuse about being on a plane).

It's an interesting game. I'm not entirely sure how to categorize it. It has some of the feel of the Series: COIN (GMT) games crossed with Here I Stand.

I think we missed a lot of the diplomacy/negotiation aspects because it was our first play. I'd certainly try it again, though.

Dr. Bruce brought this over the other night. Quick, fun, light, enjoyable.

Yes, it has cubes. But there's fighting! And fleeing. Lots of fleeing.

The Americans got off to a strong start by going big in New England. My British countered with a southern strategy that netted me NJ, DE, MD, VA, GA and SC while barely holding on up in Quebec and ceding Nova Scotia pretty early. He focused on clearing out and securing NY, which he added to his control of CT, RI, MA, NH, ME and Nova Scotia.

He pulled Quebec from my control, but I was able to win with the British by springing my second truce card and flipping two colonies on my last move, by regaining control of Quebec and grabbing control of a weakly-defended PA. In fact, PA sat nearly empty for most of the game, which I was counting on for the last turn push. Timing your last truce card is the key to the whole game.

Played this at AAC Con 2017 with Duck, Sammer, Jason and Matt. Had a blast. Sammer screwed me by taking the corporation that would have leveraged my private company for maximum return. I cast around for another corporation and ended up with the Eire which just happened to be next door to Jason's New York railroad. Due to the stock price of my corporation, I actually went before Jason and in a cutthroat move, laid two track that blocked Jason from running early in the game. I blame Sammer.

Mid-game, Jason and I realized we needed to work together to finish an east west route before Duck and Matt started making a killing on their East West route. I had an extra station laying around so I politely dropped it where Matt would not be able to run his East West Route. Sorry Matt.

In the end Eire had built a very high share price and that helped me get across the finish line.

I think this is a very good 18XX game and GMT has done a good job with the components.

I've set up the intro scenario, The Battle for Lorraine, on its little 8 1/2 x 11 map, which is fairly crammed with units. Should be a real knock-down drag-out fight. Or the French will all just madly retreat.

We played the Lublin scenario. Set up took a while and Kyle and I discussed a better way to organize the counters that should help on that front going forward.

We did a lot of rules flipping so we got through two full turns and then skipped to the interphase. There is a lot of interesting stuff here. Very procedural combat system but I think it produces a very compelling variety of outcomes that match my understanding of this campaign.

Definitely looking forward to future plays of this.

and I decided to break out a VG classic. We started with the first scenario which was probably a bit too basic to get reacquainted with the rules. Once we get done we'll definitely move to something with more meat on the bones.

Cristina got a copy of this for her birthday from one our gaming group friends, so we busted it out yesterday. Easy to learn (though full of dozens of Euro-y symbols that you have to of course read the descriptions for to actually learn, defeating the purpose of using symbols) and plays in about 30-45 minutes, depending on how AP-prone you are.

I really enjoyed it. The core card selection mechanism, with its dependency-layered layout, in which cards are laid out face up and face down, and access to cards is blocked by the placement of other cards, creates some nice strategic choices to pick from such as a) maximizing your city/income/trade with your own card picks to, b) denying your opponent those resources, c) denying your opponent card picks due to the placement of the "blocking" cards.

Cristina jumped out to an early military and money lead, but I focused on denying her several key resources, which allowed me to jump ahead in the Wonder building race, and my diversity of resources eventually allowed me to turn the military mini-game to my advantage. As you build building with the red shields on them, this pushes a marker closer to your opponent's capital, and vice versa. Let it get all the way to your capital and you lose, so you can't ignore the military game entirely.

Anyway, lots of fun.

I never realized Eric Lee Smith was the designer of this, so I decided to give it a try, especially as I was looking for a good light ACW treatment since I've got a "heavy" treatment on the table at the club, with Last Chance for Victory: The Battle of Gettysburg.
