Started off with Pete, Tegan and Ian playing this game about building a road from Rome to some place starting with B, with a couple stops along the way.

On your turn you can take one of four actions; collecting rubble or money, turning the rubble into stones, using stones to build some of the road, or spending money to move your person along the road. The gimmick is in how you turn rubble into stone, and the easiest way to describe it is it's like those 20c coin games at the royal show where you put one coin in and hope it pushes at least one coin out. Any rubble that falls off the other end is traded for stone tokens. Sometimes you win big, and other times you just set up the next player for a big win.

Points are scored by building the road with a bonus for having built the majority, and by getting your person to the cities along the way before other players. The game ends when someone gets their person to Rome.

It's fairly light but there's some tough choices on which action to take each turn and you'll often find yourself wishing you could take 2 actions in a row.

One of the games I'd been looking forward to most this year and so far it hasn't disappointed. It's very much a streamlined retheme of 51st State, the main difference beings as well as the common deck everyone draws from each player also has a deck unique to their civilization. Each civ plays very differently from the others but you can't start far from their strengths or you won't be able to trigger their big points scoring cards very often. Luck of the draw plays a big part but that can be somewhat mitigated by trying to build a card draw engine early in the game. And if you're lucky enough to get the good cards into play there's still the chance you'll be attacked by other players trying to burn and pillage your buildings, making off with some great rewards as well.

Played this with the same group. Pete played the friendly but fragile Japanese, Tegan was the Barbarians who happened to get raided more times than they raided others, Ian continued trying to master the jack of all trades Romans, and I played the luxurious and sandy Egyptians. Apart from a lucky draw at the end it would've been a close finish but I managed to get my first win, knocking off Pete by a little over 10 points.

After Mal left Pete, Tegan and myself played more games, although I can't quite remember what order we played them in... Anyhow... we played this quick filler.

This game is split into two halves, the first in which each player builds their hands and the second in which you use those hands in an auction for cards. You need gold cards to buy the coloured cards, the value of which is determined by five six-sided dice (one for each colour). At the end of the game the player with the highest sum value in each colour scores points equal to the pips showing on the corresponding die. Throughout the auction phase you can sacrifice coloured cards to bid on more gold if you run out.

It's really straightforward, there can be a bit of bluffing involved (you can raise a bid, but if you get caught having to pay a bid you can't afford there is a penalty), but it's good fun and offers lots of small but meaningful decisions.

I think Pete won this, but I'm not that sure. I definitely didn't (nor ever have...).

We played this favourite (of mine, at least).

The game started a little unusually, with no one claiming patrons until about the third round. Everyone kept their visible influence scores pretty even, but I got ahead in the vault and won.

Love love love love love love love this game.

Next I taught Pete (and refreshed Tegan on) this card game from the same designers and artist team as Troyes. Everyone is trying to build their own district, which is comprised of a grid of nine cards, representing either buildings (which citizens can be sent to in order to activate them) and characters (who give bonuses to certain actions in their row and column on the grid).

Everyone draws from the same card pool, which is divided sort of thematically into military (red), church (white) and civil (yellow), and each is in turn divided into three levels.

Level three are all prestige buildings, which is how you score points. All players are eligible to score points from any card played, but the card's owner will get more. For example, the card owner might get three points for every white building in their district, whereas all other players will get one point for theirs.

I won, mainly by monopolising most of the citizens and finding the prestige buildings that score high points for doing so.

This is a game I really enjoy. It's quick, but feels a little more meaty than a simple card game.

Tim joined us for this great worker placement game. Every player is trying the win the nuclear arms race by constructing buildings, recruiting engineers and scientists, mining yellowcake, using your plants to create plutonium and uranium, and ultimately building bombs.

It's a race to fifty points, and this game has a really nice pace to it. I got off to a slow start with building bombs, as the initial selection of designs were plutonium, but all of the plutonium plants got snatched up quickly. I decided to take a chance on a uranium plant and used the bomb design action to find suitable cards.

Uranium bombs work differently in that they have two score values on each bomb card, the first you get as soon as you build the bomb, but if you decide to do a bomb test and discard that bomb (and its score) your receive a bomb test token, and score the second, much higher, points for uranium bombs for the rest of the game. I did this with a cheap, small bomb, and managed to get up to 41 points. I was all set to score another 23 on my next turn when Tim built and loaded the last bombs he needed to win the game.

This play reminded me of how much I like this game.

Tegan, Pete and myself played this small area majority / tableau building game as the final game of the day.

On their turn each player selects a card from a row of six (increasing in cost from left to right) which gives them an immediate action and an ongoing bonus or scoring multiplier. There are only four actions in the game: Place armies, move armies, destroy armies and build castles (from which armies can be built in the future). Once every player has a certain amount of cards in front of them (10 in a three player game), the game is over.

There are a few special feature tokens on the board, such as citadels that give an extra point for controlling the area, a dragon that scores two points if you place the twelfth army on the space and portals that make two spaces behave as if adjacent.

I'm not a huge fan of area majority games but I really enjoy this one. It's rally fast and very simple to learn.

I won this play.

Rob and I taught this to um, 1. Luke, Warren, David H., Gary C. and, and, someone else...

Got them through a couple of rounds and left them to it, sitting at the table next door we could answer the odd question.

It was largely enjoyed, I believe?

Played a 4 player game of this bad boy. I've gotta say I love this game, so much so that I played it with my game group the very next day There was so much to plan and think about out of turn that it never got dull and boring. The tech tree has so many combos and you have to make a lot of important decisions for research depending on what the game throws at you, and other players too! I also really enjoyed the two different types of conflict as well; warfare and cultural influence (which Jason was a master of!). Two thumbs up from me!

Played 2 game of this, 5 players then 7 players.

Playing with the correct rules this time, it's a bit easier to figure out who's the traitor, but we still lost the first game when Oliver managed to convinced everyone at the table that Ernest is the cylontraitor.

Second game the deduction worked well, and we wont a pretty tense game.

Played two games with Jan and Lihua. We were all learning. First game we got the end game condition wrong while the second game was a bit more interesting.

In the end I found a way to abuse the dynamite on the map we explored and won quite handily. But it could have gone any other way.

Fairly simple to learn. Does have a few weirdish rules but once you get over it this is a fun game and full of potential screwage.

After Cleopatra finished up Gary, Jon, Victor and I settled on a game of this (I suggested it after seeing Warrens comments on the last geeklist).

All in all a fun little game. It's so hard to sit there and watch your monk getting more and more suspicion when you can't do anything without giving your self away.

Victor won handily by managing to convince everyone he was blue instead of the actual white.

Tim took Craig and I through this one.

Halfway through the race and Craig's team of five cars were comfortably in the lead. Tim and I worked together (it's allowed) to drag our cars back into the race, passing Craig in the shadows of the finish line.

A very good simulation of the car race, thoroughly enjoyable, especially the team work (as your cars shift alliances).
