First up I taught Warren and Mitch this fantastic card game. Mark and Elaine also played.

This is one of my absolute favourites, and I'll never refuse a game. Players use cards from their hands and one of multiple things: Labourers to gather materials; Patrons to gather clients (who boost your actions); Merchants to secret materials away in your vault for big end game scoring; Craftsmen and Architects to complete buildings (each of which grants you a unique power); and Legionaries to steal materials from other players.

The really clever thing is that every card can be played as either a building, a material, a client, or an action, creating some really tough decisions.

Warren and Mitch took to it pretty quickly. Mitch especially, who pulled out the win in a tie breaker with myself, beating me by having one more card in his hand!

Next myself and Tegan played this worker placement game about ants. It had been a while since either of us played it, and it's not a very forgiving game, so neither of us played as well as we would have liked. In the end Tegan won as I was one food short when Winter arrived, and suffered some negative victory points.

Next myself and Tegan were joined by Stuart to play this abstract area control / card drafting game. The mechanisms are really simple (although the rulebook does its best to convince you otherwise), but the game is really interesting. It's the first time myself or Tegan had played with more than two, and it was a little trickier to read the board but it worked pretty well.

I won this one (my only win of the day!).

Next Mal joined Tegan, Stuart and myself for this brand new euro game about farming.

The game blends a lot of other mechanisms together. The main one that drew me to it is that cards can be put to a multitude of possible uses, echoing Glory to Rome. There's also some very Feldian mechanisms mixed in there (the turn order from Castles of Burgundy, something resembling the Temple mechanism from Luna) but I felt it all blended together really well.

Everyone else seemed to enjoy it too and I'm really looking forward to trying it again.

In fact, we played it again later in the evening as our last game of the night with Mark, Mal, Tegan and myself. Mark won that play, although we messed up a few things and there were some card misunderstandings. It was late.

After our first play of La Granja Tegan, Mal, Mark and myself played this new game which was one of the stars of this year's GenCon.

It's a very abstract game where you are trying to manipulate the workers on various tiles into a position that benefits you. It's sort of like the entire board is the mancala from Trajan.

It was pretty chaotic, and everyone was feeling a little silly by then, but I really liked it. There's an excessive amount of card shuffling between turns which gets a little tiresome, but the core mechanisms are enjoyable.

Tegan won this one.

Tim (Baron Beefheart) took Mark (Ultimate Cop), Mitch (Naked Thunder), Mike (hmm) and myself (Leather Fury) through this one about five would be super heroes trying to prove they still have the goods.

Ultimate Cop triumphed on the day.

Names may have been changed to protect the innocent and/or because I couldn't remember them all.

Mark drafted myself, Tim and Jason to playtest a furball format game. Each player brings 3 ships of escalating value and starting with their cheapest ship has a free-for-all dogfight. As each ship is destroyed their next ship is deployed onto the board. The main purpose of this game was to determine a scoring method that doesn't favour overly defensive builds.

Really enjoyed this format, especially the 10 or so turns in the middle of the game where I sat behind Mark's B-Wing slowly racking up the points.

Jacob was the new player and he picked this solid worker-placement up easily (I felt). I won on 166, over Elaine on 161, Jacob 155 and Oliver 128.

Oliver and I squared off in a two player game (with an observer who initially declined to join, and that I had to nicely ask to let us both play the game without outside advice/help), with me eventually winning 51:46.
