First up Tegan, Karl, Tim and myself played this game about evolving dinosaurs from the designer of Small World.

I've owned this game for over two years and had yet to play it, so I was glad to finally get it done. And the bonus was that I thought it was pretty good! Not something I'd play every day but a decent enough area control game.

Basically each round the climate changes so that different terrains on the board become safe, hostile, cold or hot, forcing everybody to constantly move about and get in each others faces.

There's an auction every round for evolution tiles that improve your dinosaurs, making them faster, stronger, resistant to heat or cold etc. as well as some unique mutations such as wings or flippers.

Karl managed to snag a unique mutation that gave him two horns early, making him very hard to beat in combat. This gave him a pretty big advantage as no body wanted to go after him. In the end Karl won. I'm pretty sure I came last..?

We were then joined by Jason and Genevieve for two quick rounds of this party game.

Everybody writes a word on the first page of an erasable flip-book, and passes the book to the player on their left. That player has to draw it and pass the drawing to the next player, who then writes what they think the drawing is of, before passing it to the next player to draw what they wrote. Hilarity ensues.

This was fun but I think it would be better with more players and with more outlandish clues.

While trying to decide what big game we were going to play next the same group played this simple filler game.

Each player has a group of pirates on the titular plank and are trying to be the last ones left after everyone else falls into the giant squid's gaping maw.

It's a programmed action game in which every player places three action cards face down in the order they want to activate them, then each card is revealed one by one.

I'm TERRIBLE at programmed action games so I was squid food pretty quick. Jason and Genevieve ended up battling it out and Jason won.

I wasn't crazy about this one, though I have a feeling my daughter will like it...

Next up Tegan, Tim and myself played this great euro about farming and selling junk to someone or other.

I've really been enjoying this one lately and think it's a great blend of many familiar mechanisms.

I won this one.

The same group was joined by Warren, who taught us Cinque Terre (although Tegan and myself had played once before).

This is a deceptively simple pick-up-and-deliver game were everyone is racing around in their little truck, picking up fruit and delivering it to fulfil orders.

I did TERRIBLY at this game, and game dead last. Tim did really well throughout and won in the end, and took the brunt of much abuse for it.

Next up I quickly relearned and then taught this euro game about getting stuff and making it into other stuff (in this case a castle). Players simultaneously select from a hand of action cards, which are then resolved in a fixed order. It's mainly a hand management game and one I enjoy quite a bit. I realised later that I taught one rule incorrectly that meant there was much more money in the game than there should have been, so we'll have to have a rematch. Although I won, so maybe not.

Last but not least Tegan, Tim and myself played this great little card game to finish out the day. It's a very abstract game where players are trying to take as few cards as possible (lowest score wins), but if you have the most of a colour you flip them over and each card only counts as one point (face up they are valued between 0 and 10). So if you have to take some cards, you need to make sure you end up with more than anyone else.

I absolutely did not win this one... I think Tegan did?

Started the day with a 3 player game of this old chestnut. Pretty close scoring in the end. 4pts between 1st and last pretty sure the battle of the farmers between Julian and Trucker decided it with Trucker edging Jules out. 1st time game for Trucker he played very well but so did I (Warren style) . Trucker was also nice enough to let me back in the game at one point with a nice city/castle tile lay in my favour cool before that the metrocity that Jules and Truck built (something like 30 pts blew me out it).

Next up Neil was nice enough to show us this cool card laying leap frogging pirate racing game. With 5 cards to choose from and the ability to replenish cards by moving pirates backyards on the track there was enough there to keep you thinking. 1st game I managed to race all my pirates out onto the boat and escape in 1st place, while waiting for the others I read over the rules and realised we played the 1st game wrong. You can move more than 1 pirate at a time, in fact up to 3 can be moved. So all were up for a 2nd round which Jules managed to take out. Shame this one looks to be OOP? cry

Next up we were joined by Nick who took Trucker’s spot in Vikings. I do like the buying mechanism of this game with the rotating wheel in the middle. We'd all played it once before but it had been a while so were a bit rusty. This one I managed an easy win probably helped by the fact I had the rules next to me throughout the game. I do like this one with the combos that come out which always seem to make for interesting games and choices.

Jacob then mentioned that he had been wanting to play this one for a while and was fairly easy. With the 1-2hrs playing time I wasn't too sure about that? Jules and I looked at each other for quite a while there when the rules explanation went out longer than our dinner but in the end we figured it out. Nick seemed to grasp his race better than the rest of us and snuck in to 1st before Jacob I reckon. It turned out to be not as hard/complicated as it 1st seemed, I'd be up for another game to see if experience can mitigate what seemed like a fairly handy tribe/race to have from Nick but I doubt I'd add this game to the collection with this type of conflict game not hitting the mark with any of my gaming groups.ninja

Last up the same group tried out Puerto Rico. Which I managed to take out the win over Jacob. At one point the game had 1/2 of us wanting to home rule the Trader role when we had 3 of the 4 slots filled but couldnt clear it for ages. I'd be happy to play that way next time but I prefer to keep the rules intact as is, it can be brutal at times but that's the nature of this game sometimes. Probably a little harsh on people that haven't played it before especially when it seems like you can't get into the game and when you finally do, it's all over whistle

One of my Kickstarter games.

Tim, Ian, Tegan and myself had a 20 minute flirt of a game before I had to leave.

Due to time constraints I explained the game fairly quickly... and very poorly. Luckily, they're a bright bunch of gamers and picked it up easily.

Everything is card driven, and the cards create a story, or case, as they are played. Players ultimately try to exhaust their hands in order to apprehend classic Holmes bad guys by manipulating other players' hands and trapping them with a villain card. The detectives play arrest cards when they feel they have enough information, or make an impromptu arrest (guess) when they run out of cards. Alternatively, players stuck with villain cards are trying to escape by exhausting their hands.

The game was a little confusing (because I explained the rules badly) and we didn't get to finish (because I had to leave), but there seems to be potential here.

Tim won the first round by arresting Tegan, but only scored one victory point for the case! Ian was given a mysterious telegram...

Managed to smash this bad boy out with a mate. It's a pretty brutal game and is not forgiving for beginners, so really requires a couple of plays before you can fully get into it. Once you do get into it, it is a very solid game with solid mechanics and a lot of different paths to get you to victory. The dice activation system always plays with your head and meddles with your plans, but it forces flexibility which is not a bad thing. Two thumbs up from me.
