This list provides a short overview into the games that influenced us in the creation of Nord.
And is probably further evidence, that Game Design is mostly done by picking mechanics and mixing them together.

Grandfather of expansion games.

Placeholder for the first computer game as well, which was brining mechanics of food supply through the hinterland (neighbour fields), caravans to create victory points and the common use of infrastructure.

The German version had the title 'Die Wikinger kommen' or 'The Vikings are coming'.
The big meeples are just looking great, a good inspiration in creating Jarls, when we finally switched to Vikings theme. Haptics are important.

An absolutely mean game with incredible high interaction. Get the old version and play it!
Graphical inspiration as well: mines, forest, karst and cities were all their in Löwenherz. We added water and a quite more variable setup (not that Löwenherz needed that).

Hard fights with radical combats. Nord is removing aspects of the direct enemy removal, but keeping the more subtle aspects of Tigris.
Players can preconnect different alliances on the board to prohibit later attacks. Players can claim fishing boats to deplete other players of food for their fighters. Players can create majorities to overthrow Jarls.
Tigris is a great example, that you do not need asymmetries other player technologies to create an exciting combat focused game.

What grows, will decline.
You must expand to score, but make yourself more vulnerable in the process.
A lot more dynamic than most civilization games.
I much prefer this version to Small Worlds. Small worlds adds to many fiddly rules and extras, especially with its expansions/other boxes.
Vinci is pure and extremely good. The combat is explicit.
The decline is not as steep and sudden as in Tigris, which can feel a bit abrupt from time to time.
Nord is mixing both parts of decline, if you attack, instantly Vikings will die and some will enter the settlements as fighters.
When the dragon boat is filled with dead Vikings, a scoring is triggered, in which more Vikings will be removed.

Obviously inspiring the scoring of treasures.

A long time we had problems with the last turn in Nord as it was possible to count all points of all players which led to some kingmaking or stalement problems.

- We tried different types of hidden points:
-Treasures with explicit points like 2 or 3
- Hidden goals giving extra points for forrest or karst or a number of settlements with a special number of warriors
etc.

Finally we had the idea of a little set collection on the action tiles like Dorn did it in Goa.

We liked the trade off between taking an action or going for points really well and just had to make a nice number of treasures and a fair starting distribution.

Simple implementation of network building. The network building in Nord is quite alike. Each player starts on his own and later can use parts of other players as well. In Nord we added the removal of network parts to allow for a more dynamic game compared to TransAmerica, which grows a bit stale, when all players are connected.

Another big issue over years was the soring.

First we had only the piles of warriors couting 1-3-6-10-15... in 1 final scoring. This was a bit too easy and leading to repetitive games.

Second we added the resource scoring.

Third we tried different numbers of both scoring types and different orders.

Forth we tried to trigger them not by a number of rounds but by men who were taken off the map.

Fifth we added extra scorings for special goals and kicked them immediately.

Sixth we had a special scoring bar where a scoring token went up and down.

Seventh we introduced the dragon boat which may be inspired by the different scoring mechanisms and triggering mechanisms in Seyfarth's Puerto Rico.

Eighth we possibility to end the game by running out of men to triggering a scoring. This prevented great frustrations which could appear.

Nineth we explored the wonderful possibility to score the jarls by using there seat positions and to scale the game by the unused jarls.

Tenth we restricted the dead workers going to the boat after a single attack to 2. Otherwise it was too easy to trigger a scoring by killing 6+ workers.

In sum we now got a fixed number of scorings with a flexible timing providing some nice tactical elements and including a fine scaling to nummbers of players and a funny randomness elemnet to the 1 shot scoring of jarls.

Because at least one game younger than ten years needs to be on this list and it was the most inspiring game for us in the last years.
Showing that great ideas can be realized and games of conquest be intensified into 45 minutes.
The first rounds of it are probably the best, as more is changing and the rules are quite simple, the victory point system is a great accelerator for removing all of original Risks slowness.
Later rounds might be a bit overburdened, as too many text has to be read and special effects demanding constant attention.
