Status Updates and Trends

20 Most Desired Reprints of 2015

For the second year, to run in conjunction with the 20 Most Anticipated Games the Most Desired Reprints wishlist is a place where you can add all those out-of-print grail games that you wish you could add to this list.

By popular request... well... at least two people... I started the 20 Most Desired (Unplanned) Expansions of 2015.

Where the 2014 favorites are now.
Last year's winner, Xia: Legends of a Drift System, is already nearing the top 500, but last year's runner-up, Cthulhu Wars, is still delayed and looking like it will have a shot at this year's title.

Some of last year's top 20 failed to live up to the hype... I'm looking at you Myth. Others are exceeding expectations, such as Shadows of Brimstone, King of New York, and especially Dead of Winter.

Without further ado nominations are once again open in this very in-formal and un-official contest to determine the 20 Most Anticipated Games of 2015.

Key Dates:
Nominations Open: Sunday, December 7, 2014
Nominations Close: Friday, January 2, 2015
Voting Begins: Saturday, January 3, 2015
Voting Ends: Saturday, January 17, 2015

Nominating your most anticipated.
As always, if a game you're anticipating the release in 2015 is not on the list feel free to add it. Game designers and publishers are encouraged to nominate their own games by adding them to the list. Don't be humble and wait for someone else to do it. See the notes below for adding games.

As in past years, this will be a two-stage process... a nominations phase and a final voting phase.

Adding category nominations.
If you think a game should be in a category not already listed, you can add it in a comment using the category notation below, such as [category]wargame[/category]. If your comment has 5 or more thumbs the category will be added to the nomination.

Campaigning for your favorites
Go for it. If you're a publisher, designer, or designer's mom don't hesitate to campaign for your favorites. Bribing voters is fine too. Pretty much anything goes as long as kittens, puppies and small children aren't injured. We have to draw the line somewhere.

Nominations
To nominate a game add it to this geeklist with one or more categories using the category tags below. Please add a short note stating why it is anticipated that the game will ship in 2015. Feel free to suggest new categories.

Nomination name
Nominations may not have a BGG entry yet, or you may want to change the nomination name to indicate a specific edition.

To do so, put the nomination name inside of altname tags such as:
[altname]Favorite game - Unnamed expansion[/altname]

To second a nomination thumb its entry.

The top 50 nominations will be entered into the final vote for the top 20.

Nomination Categories:
Categories will be changed based on the nominations, but tentatively these are the categories I expect us to have, initially based on 2014 entries. Feel free to nominate a game for multiple categories. Some of the categories may be combined or eliminated if there aren't enough nominations in the category.

Eligibility
Any newly available game or expansion is eligible if it is reasonably expected to ship in 2015. I know, "reasonably" is a fuzzy word... cest la vie.

Voting
At the conclusion of nominations I will create a poll with the top 50 nominations.

Reprints vs. new editions
Reprints of already released games are not eligible, but new editions are. As with many things in the gaming industry this isn't a crisp line as to how many changes are necessary to distinguish a reprint from a new edition, but several factors to consider are artwork and components.

When nominating a new edition, mention why you think this one is different from the previous edition (not necessarily in detail, something as short as "new components" is sufficient).

Long out-of-print reprints
I would prefer to include games that have been generally unavailable for several years and are receiving a reprint. Again, this is a bit of a fuzzy area, but as an example, if Warhammer Quest or Hero Quest were to be reprinted without changes they would be eligible.

Multiple releases
It is not uncommon for a game printing to have multiple release editions for the EU and US markets (such as Mayfair/Lookout Games and JKLM/Z-Man). Many games are released and available at Essen and then (sometimes much later) released in the US with great anticipation.

For many, I think the "buzz" surrounding an Essen release combined with the general unavailability heightens the anticipation.

I would prefer to include these releases and let the voting determine how anticipant people are.

Limited initial release
I would also prefer to include games that had a limited initial release and are preparing for a full re-release. Again, this will be a grey area, but one example I would point to is the approach that Treefrog, Winsome, GMT and other publishers take with typically small pre-order releases that sell out quickly and receive a reprint if they perceive that the game was well received.

What is a small or limited release? Again, another gray area that we'll have to deal with as it comes up, as I'm sure a small release for Hasbro is quite different for a small release from most publishers here on BoardGameGeek.

This would also include games that might have had reviewer copies released, but are not yet generally available for purchase.

Other
If the particular game is part of a series (such as the Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game) I may combine multiple nominations into one entry for final voting if it appears as if the series is anticipated rather than a specific release in the series (this was done for the Dominion expansions in 2010).

Also, if there isn't any justification for why a particular game is anticipated to ship in 2015 I may remove it from final voting. The only reason I state this is to separate anticipated 2015 releases from wishlist items. Yes, it would be nice if Hasbro/Avalon Hill reprinted Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit but at this point I don't believe there is any reason to anticipate a 2015 release.

However, in this respect I would prefer to be inclusive rather than exclusive.

Anything else??? We'll wing it... After all, this is just for fun.

Currently on the GMT P500 list at 488 pre-orders, so we're anticipating a mid-late 2015 release.

On the morning of August 16th, 1870 at the Gravelotte crossroads outside the fortress of Metz, Napoleon III, Emperor of the French Second Empire, turned over command of the Army of the Rhine to a reluctant Marshal Francois Achille Bazaine. The Army of the Rhine, the last intact field army and already the last hope for France during the two-week old Franco-Prussian War, was gathered around the protection of the Metz fortress complex. The Prussian I and II Armies were sweeping forward, hot on the heels of the retiring French. But poor weather and a disorganized cavalry screen allowed the French army to break contact with the pursuing Prussians. Helmuth von Moltke, Chief of the Prussian General Staff, instructed his armies to wheel south of the fortress, cross the Moselle River and attempt to catch the French in flank. The only problem with this plan was – where were the French? The resulting two-day campaign produced some of the more remarkable battles in military history – the Battles of Mars-La-Tour and Gravelotte-St. Privat. These two battles produced over 60,000 casualties, with each army suffering equally. Both battles had significance not only for the Franco-Prussian War, but for the course of European history. In fact, Otto von Bismarck remarked at Versailles in January 1871: “What is certain beyond argument is that the war – and with it the future of Europe – was decided at Mars-la-Tour on 16 August 1870.”

At Any Cost: Metz 1870 is a game simulating the situation west of the Metz fortress during those few days of August 1870. The game is designed to be a playable, two-player brigade-scale game that allows players to experience the unique tactical warfare matchups that characterized fighting during the Franco-Prussian War. This era, though generally overlooked in the gaming industry, is a fascinating study in Napoleonic tactics (and uniforms) slamming head-on into modern killing technology. The Prussian military juggernaut is armed with the new steel Krupp breach-loading artillery pieces that far outclassed the French guns. Prussian doctrine, adapted to the lessons learned during the Austro-Prussian War of 1866, allowed junior officers to exercise initiative and aggressiveness. The French army, meanwhile, was armed with the modern and deadly Chassepot rifle, a firearm so advanced that many argue its deployment alone should have won the war for the French. In addition, the French army was now equipped with their ultimate secret weapon - the Mitrailleuse, which was the first machinegun used en masse. Moreover, the game system makes clear that the French soldier, despite misconceptions to the contrary, fought valiantly during these battles. By all rights, they could have – and should have – won many of these engagements. But leadership, morale and tenacity won the day for the Prussians. All these factors are seamlessly embedded into the At Any Cost game system and players will be challenged to utilize their advantages and minimize their disadvantages throughout the game. Will YOU as the Prussian player be able to withstand an early severe numerical disadvantage and use the brave audacity of the Prussian soldier and artilleryman to win the day? Can YOU as the French player overcome the lethargic and uninspired command structure of the Army of the Rhine and allow your tough and well-equipped infantry to fight unhindered?

The game also features the Blind Swords chit-pull system which emphasizes the three “FOW’s” of military conflict: fog-of-war, friction-of-war and fortunes-of-war. With each chit pull, players will be challenged to make tough decisions based on their assessment of the current situation. Unlike traditional chit-pull mechanisms, the Blind Swords system ensures that no combat units can be counted on, or conversely, counted out. This yields an environment of tense action and constant surprises – an environment that will challenge each player.

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT "REPRINT" TOPIC:
It's worth mentioning that this game does have a new bar code and should be seen as the same-but-different from the 1st Edition!
(if that makes any sense)
shake
Let me explain a little more...

We here at Common Man Games have debated the merits of creating a whole new "Game" listing here on BGG for the 2nd Edition.
We feel that there are a host of pros and cons to doing this. We have also discussed this with Key figures within BGG and just now (today) with our host Rick Vinyard (via email and then in the comments section below as-well). He advised us to handle this particular geek-list in the way we are doing here.
We see the 2nd Edition as simply a revamped version of the 1st Edition, though I might add that a LOT of effort went into the "revamping".
I hope this explanation was helpful and that we were able to properly nominate this game.
Another thing that could be helpful in this regard is taking a look at this in-depth examination of the differences between the 1st and 2nd Editions...

Wongamania is a educational card game for 2 to 6 players, that places you in an simulated economic cycle, whereby you have to accumulate wealth using stocks, bonds and properties through economic bloom and gloom.

Created by Capital Gains, an independent games studio located in Singapore, Wongamania is their first foray into the world of tabletop games.

An average game will see you learning how to juggle among different asset class in order to make money during good or bad times. At the same time, you will also play the role of market forces, putting your friends (or enemies) through personal hardships and economic turbulence. Wongamania is the first of its kind, to bring you through the world of inflation, interest rates, taxes and political turmoil.

While teaching people about Economics through fun and laughter is one of the main objective of this game, the designer also wants to highlight some of the financial loopholes which unscrupulous people use to exploit the financial system.

Insurance fraud, scamming people of their hard earned money and moving money offshore, profiting from insider news, and relying on political connections to make money. All these themes are illustrated subtly within the game, to warn the man on the streets on how the game of money is stacked against them. A player may risk retribution from other players for going against the very sense of morality by employing such strategies.

Wongamania is expected to launch in South East Asia in Jan 2015. A US release via amazon is planned to launch on March 2015.

Theme-dripping worker placement game which looks fantastic and plays better.

Learn, prepare and perform your 'magic' tricks to gain the public's adulation. Don't be afraid to get your hand's dirty and you could beat your rivals to become the next 'Legend of Illusion'.

It already looked amazing at Essen. Since then there has been a few tweaks and it's now pretty much looking ready to go to Kickstarter in the New Year.

Go find out what those who've seen it are so excited about.

GMT's blurb:
Quote:
The U.S. Civil War is a 2-player strategic-level war game of the American Civil War. The game covers the entire war from 1861-65 on a large 30” x 44” map area (2 mounted maps) of the Southeastern United States. Turns represent 3 months during the winter and 2 months during the summer, with four Action Phases to each turn.

Military forces are represented by generals and strength-points (SPs). Each SP represents approximately 5,000 soldiers. Game mechanics stress strategy, maneuver and leadership but details like ironclads, naval battles, leader promotions, forts, and commerce raiders are included.

Shorter scenarios are included that cover just 1861, 1862 and 1863.

This is an interesting looking game that has been compared to Agricola, but looks quite different.

It had a limited initial release that sold out at Essen, and a a larger scale reprint, with international distribution (including the U.S. this time) has been announced.

Treatment is a game for 2-4 players about psychiatric treatment. The goal of the game is to win four cases.

Each case represents a psychiatric disease such as depression or Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. A case is played trough a number of rounds where the players can either choose to manage their hands or secretly treat the case by playing treatments from different categories.

But watch out if a symptom that matches the category of the case is drawn the rounds end and treatment starts. In order to win you need to take care of the cases you already have in treatment as well as providing the best treatment for the presented case.

Coming out on kickstarter during the first part of 2015.

This Kickstarter game was originally due in Oct 2014, but it's a bit delayed (hopefully only till Jan 2015!). This is the game I'm currently most excited for.

Revamping of the old Lone Wolf RPG into a grid based tactical wargame. And if that wasn't enough: it's illustrated by Gary Chalk.

In Bill Shakespeare is Dead, one of Shakespeare’s famous plays is split into five short acts. During each act, one person acts as the Stage Manager, and two people are randomly chosen to act out the scene. As they go through the script, the rest of the players will have to fill in missing nouns and verbs randomly drawn from the deck and helpfully shouted when there is a blank part in the script. The Stage Manager chooses which nouns and verbs go where. At the end, you can tally your points and declare a winner, if that’s your sort of thing.

Billed as one of the most challenging deck-builder games out there, and rightfully so. A very historical oriented game that has politics, economics, trade, military, religion and social mechanics along with authentic people and events from history. An awesome empire builder that deals with the specific events and period around the French Revolution.
