Status Updates and Trends

20 Most Desired Reprints of 2015

For the second year, to run in conjunction with the 20 Most Anticipated Games the Most Desired Reprints wishlist is a place where you can add all those out-of-print grail games that you wish you could add to this list.

By popular request... well... at least two people... I started the 20 Most Desired (Unplanned) Expansions of 2015.

Where the 2014 favorites are now.
Last year's winner, Xia: Legends of a Drift System, is already nearing the top 500, but last year's runner-up, Cthulhu Wars, is still delayed and looking like it will have a shot at this year's title.

Some of last year's top 20 failed to live up to the hype... I'm looking at you Myth. Others are exceeding expectations, such as Shadows of Brimstone, King of New York, and especially Dead of Winter.

Without further ado nominations are once again open in this very in-formal and un-official contest to determine the 20 Most Anticipated Games of 2015.

Key Dates:
Nominations Open: Sunday, December 7, 2014
Nominations Close: Friday, January 2, 2015
Voting Begins: Saturday, January 3, 2015
Voting Ends: Saturday, January 17, 2015

Nominating your most anticipated.
As always, if a game you're anticipating the release in 2015 is not on the list feel free to add it. Game designers and publishers are encouraged to nominate their own games by adding them to the list. Don't be humble and wait for someone else to do it. See the notes below for adding games.

As in past years, this will be a two-stage process... a nominations phase and a final voting phase.

Adding category nominations.
If you think a game should be in a category not already listed, you can add it in a comment using the category notation below, such as [category]wargame[/category]. If your comment has 5 or more thumbs the category will be added to the nomination.

Campaigning for your favorites
Go for it. If you're a publisher, designer, or designer's mom don't hesitate to campaign for your favorites. Bribing voters is fine too. Pretty much anything goes as long as kittens, puppies and small children aren't injured. We have to draw the line somewhere.

Nominations
To nominate a game add it to this geeklist with one or more categories using the category tags below. Please add a short note stating why it is anticipated that the game will ship in 2015. Feel free to suggest new categories.

Nomination name
Nominations may not have a BGG entry yet, or you may want to change the nomination name to indicate a specific edition.

To do so, put the nomination name inside of altname tags such as:
[altname]Favorite game - Unnamed expansion[/altname]

To second a nomination thumb its entry.

The top 50 nominations will be entered into the final vote for the top 20.

Nomination Categories:
Categories will be changed based on the nominations, but tentatively these are the categories I expect us to have, initially based on 2014 entries. Feel free to nominate a game for multiple categories. Some of the categories may be combined or eliminated if there aren't enough nominations in the category.

Eligibility
Any newly available game or expansion is eligible if it is reasonably expected to ship in 2015. I know, "reasonably" is a fuzzy word... cest la vie.

Voting
At the conclusion of nominations I will create a poll with the top 50 nominations.

Reprints vs. new editions
Reprints of already released games are not eligible, but new editions are. As with many things in the gaming industry this isn't a crisp line as to how many changes are necessary to distinguish a reprint from a new edition, but several factors to consider are artwork and components.

When nominating a new edition, mention why you think this one is different from the previous edition (not necessarily in detail, something as short as "new components" is sufficient).

Long out-of-print reprints
I would prefer to include games that have been generally unavailable for several years and are receiving a reprint. Again, this is a bit of a fuzzy area, but as an example, if Warhammer Quest or Hero Quest were to be reprinted without changes they would be eligible.

Multiple releases
It is not uncommon for a game printing to have multiple release editions for the EU and US markets (such as Mayfair/Lookout Games and JKLM/Z-Man). Many games are released and available at Essen and then (sometimes much later) released in the US with great anticipation.

For many, I think the "buzz" surrounding an Essen release combined with the general unavailability heightens the anticipation.

I would prefer to include these releases and let the voting determine how anticipant people are.

Limited initial release
I would also prefer to include games that had a limited initial release and are preparing for a full re-release. Again, this will be a grey area, but one example I would point to is the approach that Treefrog, Winsome, GMT and other publishers take with typically small pre-order releases that sell out quickly and receive a reprint if they perceive that the game was well received.

What is a small or limited release? Again, another gray area that we'll have to deal with as it comes up, as I'm sure a small release for Hasbro is quite different for a small release from most publishers here on BoardGameGeek.

This would also include games that might have had reviewer copies released, but are not yet generally available for purchase.

Other
If the particular game is part of a series (such as the Call of Cthulhu: The Card Game) I may combine multiple nominations into one entry for final voting if it appears as if the series is anticipated rather than a specific release in the series (this was done for the Dominion expansions in 2010).

Also, if there isn't any justification for why a particular game is anticipated to ship in 2015 I may remove it from final voting. The only reason I state this is to separate anticipated 2015 releases from wishlist items. Yes, it would be nice if Hasbro/Avalon Hill reprinted Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit but at this point I don't believe there is any reason to anticipate a 2015 release.

However, in this respect I would prefer to be inclusive rather than exclusive.

Anything else??? We'll wing it... After all, this is just for fun.

Shadow Throne is a drafting, hand management game of Machiavellian intrigue. Three factions struggle for dominance in a civil war, but the players, as members of a secret society, don't care who wins as long as they're on the winning side.

Shadow Throne is scheduled for release in March of 2015.

It's hard to even articulate why this game is such a must-have for me.

Obviously, the superlatively beautiful board helps, but the little-gamed-theme is also a clincher!

I can't believe this hasn't been listed yet, this game will be one of a very select few that I am 100% certain to purchase in 2015.

BRING IT ON!!! cool

This is a whimsical game of swashbuckling goodness perfect for the whole family. This card game is all about adding pirates onto an abandoned treasure trove of a ship. There are gold and silver half coins on on four corners of the cards. Matching the coins awards that player either one (silver) or two (gold) coins.

Each pirate card adds a special ability, be it swapping cards, eliminating other cards, stealing coins from other players, and affects how pirate cards enter the ship (from left or right). The artwork in the game is humorous and attractive especially to kids.

Players begin the game as an Adventurer. These Adventurers have variable player powers including Movement, Attack, Mind, and Spirit traits - which are tracked on each player's character card.

Adventurers begin their Quest on the Church Tile and then explore outward laying new tiles discovering new areas such as the Castle, Observatory, and Graveyard. On many of the board tiles players will encounter Event spaces marked with the "E" icon requiring the player to draw and resolve an Event Card.

Most Event Cards describe a perilous situation that the Adventurer must face and overcome. A poor roll will often result in loss of health, while rewards are given for a successful roll.

Adventurers will also encounter Token Spaces (the gear-shaped icons) on which Quest Tokens are placed when the tile is laid. To win the token, the Adventurer must make a die roll. The number of dice rolled depends on the character's traits. If the player is successful they exchange the token for a Quest Card.

The Quest Deck consists of items (some helpful, some cursed, while others are a bit of both), Knowledge Cards needed to solve the curse and win the game, and Transformation Cards that turn players into Monsters.

Now for the original part: If players collect the wrong (or right!) combination of cards they are transformed into Monsters. As the Vampire, the Werewolf, or the Zombie the goal for winning the game immediately becomes killing the Adventurers - as opposed to taking out he monsters.

How to win:
1. Solve the curse: Collect Knowledge Cards from the Quest Deck and return your pawn to the Church Tile.
2. Slay a Monster: Collect Item Cards from the Quest Deck that make you powerful enough to fight and kill one of the Monsters.
3. Take out other players: Transform into a Monster with a Transformation card and then attack and take out half of the players.

I'm not particularly an ameritrash sort of player, but the notion of the possibility of transforming from an adventurer into a monster intrigued me enough to back the game.

I'm surprised that this hasn't been added. I have listened to a large amount of the Happy Mitten Games podcasts and have heard about the game development, production planning, and distribution. Whilst it's not my most anticipated game, I am pretty curious as to how the final product pans out and surely it will come out this year.

The year is 1560. Accused murderer Don Lope de Aguirre arranges the assassination of Pedro de Ursua, the conquistador in charge of what would be the last major Spanish expedition to locate El Dorado. An El Dorado unbeliever, Aguirre changes the function of the expedition from one of exploration to one of conquest and leads a flotilla of brigantines, canoes, and rafts along the Amazon and Orinoco Rivers with the intention of wresting away Peru from the heirs of the Pizzaros. Along the way, the expedition faces challenges in the form of privation, disease, lack of morale, navigating the mighty South American rivers, and attacks from the natives, against whom Aguirre commits barbaric atrocities. But the greatest danger to the expedition is Aguirre's own growing paranoia. Later known as The Tyrant and The Madman, Aguirre maintains control through force of personality and sheer terror in the form of daily executions. No one is safe from Aguirre's paranoia. Not his most loyal lieutenants. Not priests and missionaries. Not Ursua's wife, the beautiful Dona Inez, the jewel of all South America. And not even Aguirre's own young daughter.

Aguirre is a historical and thematic Euro-style board game. Players are members of the doomed expedition tasked with accumulating enough influence in the camp in order to overthrow Aguirre before he turns his paranoid eye on them. To do this, players will have to influence the most prominent personalities of the expedition (role selection), accumulate supplies to keep their camp faction happy (set collection), and overcome the challenges the expedition faces to demonstrate their capacity for leadership. Perhaps the most innovative part of the game is the Paranoia phase, during which Aguirre executes one of the personalities influenced that turn, removing them and their special ability from the rest of the game! Because the available select-able roles decrease as the game progresses, players will have to exercise adaptive strategy in order to be successful. In the end, only one player will emerge victorious to tell the tale of Aguirre (not player elimination, but at the end of the game Aguirre executes all losing players just for fun before being overthrown )!

Aguirre is a Tabletop Deathmatch 2014 finalist and is currently being pitched to various publishers with an expected 2015 wide-distribution release. In the meantime, BGGers can download the complete and completely free PnP files (featuring professional art courtesy of Mackenzie Schubert of Penny Press fame) from the game's page here at BGG!

A goblin-stacking, pvp, deck-building game.

This is our first game. We'll be adding a much improved free Print n' Play to the game page come January, and hopefully launching a kickstarter in Spring.

"As a giant airship travels to various far-flung locales, rival gangs compete to pull off daring heists. Your job is to recruit various skilled criminals to join your gang as you plan to take down fortified locations and steal the loot guarded within. You may also complete smaller jobs on the airship itself as it travels across the globe. Set in a steampunk world, Skyway Robbery offers high adventure and cunning, card-driven game play.

A player's turn consists of selecting three action cards and determining their order in secret. Once all players have selected their three actions, the cards are revealed and resolved in turn. Most actions allow players to purchase new cards (hire gang members and buy equipment) from areas on the board or engage in an illegal, but lucrative, activity. Whoever earns the most Reputation points at the end of the game is the winner."

Really looking forward to this one.

The gameplay is engaging and the strategy is more in depth than you would expect from a small game

I playtested this and quite enjoyed it.

Letter Tycoon is a word game for 2-5 players, with investment mechanics. Building words earns you money and stocks, and you may buy letter "patents". Patents earn you money when someone uses your letter in a word. Some patents afford unique abilities.

Previously set for an early year Kickstarter, Letter Tycoon is now on a fast track to deliver in Spring 2015, debuting at Toy Fair in February, and then possibly crowd funding to expand the initial release.

"Circular Reasoning" is an abstract strategy game developed by two students at the University of Texas at Dallas, Tomer Braff and Edward Stevenson, under the name 'Giant Shoulder Productions'. After a hugely enthusiastic response from the class, the two decided "why not" and submitted it to IndieCade.

After being featured at IndieCade 2014, the game was picked up by Ad Magic under their new publishing branch "Breaking Games". Now looking at a

The board consists of a goal in the center and three concentric tracks of 16 spaces each. Each track has a gate to the next level, but the gates rotate around the board according to the number of pawns found in each level.

Each player gets three pawns, a square, triangle and circle, which move four, three or two spaces, respectively. In addition to racing toward the center, pawns can be used to block other pawns from using the gates to advance.
