This GeekList is intended to be a summary of active boardgame crowdfunding projects which will ship their games from within the European Union for EU backers, which can make a huge difference (here's a detailed post if you are interested).
Have you ever wondered why most successful Kickstarter projects have a small percentage of overseas backers? Well, here's a powerful reason why - the prospect of games being stopped at customs. As an example, I live in Spain and any package over $30 coming from the USA will be stopped at customs for several days, then held until I pay VAT (21%) plus a handling fee of about $25.
If you add the (usual) extra charge for EU shipping, you routinely pay about double what an American backer would. For, say, a project in which the game is $40 and the extra for EU shipping is $10, you'd end up ponying up about $85.
For countries within the European Union, this can be avoided by having your games ship from within the EU. This way, they clear customs on the port of entry, and they don't have to pass customs again on their way to the final destination, as long as it's also within the EU. A typical arrangement is sending a bulk shipment of games to a German port, have somebody do the VAT paperwork for you, then hand the distribution to Amazon. Jamey Stegmaier, from Stonemaier Games, has a very nice writeup on the subject up on their website.
As most KS games still don't have this figured out, and as I can imagine that a lot of potential European backers are held up by the perspective of customs nightmares, I figured that it would be nice to have a list of KS (and similar) projects which will be sent from within the EU.
NOTE : Collaborations are welcome! I would like the list to be as complete as possible.
NOTE : To cater to the biggest possible audience, projects should be either in English, language independant, or at least have an English translation available. More languages are a plus, of course.
NOTE : Projects are added to the end of the list as they become active on KS (or get EU-friendly shipping), so the best way to be notified of new projects is to subscribe to the Geeklist.
NOTE : Please only include projects which have explicitly confirmed they will ship from within the EU or which have stated they are actively looking for a way to do it. In the latter case, please put a clear notice in the item to let interested people know that it's still not definitive.
NOTE : This does not necessarily imply that shipping to Europe is 'free' - it's OK for the projects to charge a different cost for shipping to Europe, or for particular countries there. The operative criteria is no hidden customs costs - which means shipments from within the EU.
