A day off being a full year since my first play of this game, it was great to finally get it off the shelf for a second play.

Mark, Pete, Mal and I sat down and played a game with the basic cards as even those of us who had played hadn't in a while. It's a game with a lot to teach, but it all fits together quite logically and plays quite well.

I decided to completely neglect military and suffered pretty badly for it.

Mark won quite comfortably.

Really great game that I would like to play again soon!

Next we needed something quick before Mal had to run off for a few hours.

We played this dice game version of Pandemic.

And it was OK. I would rather play Pandemic. It doesn't shave much time off it at all.

I think we might have been interpreting the rules a bit fast and loose too? I dunno.

We got close, but we lost due to a few unlucky rolls attempting to cure the red virus.

Would play again, but wouldn't request it.

Next Ian showed up to run through the prototype of The Gallerist, as he is working on the art for it and wanted to make sure it all worked/made sense and to spot any minor errors that might have slipped through.

Ian taught Mike, Pete and myself this game of buying and selling art and running a gallery.

I won't get too specific about gameplay, as it is still in development (Ian was messaged a rule change while we were playing), but generally it's a worker placement game with a 'bumping' mechanism, sort of similar to Euphoria, only in this game you get to take an additional action when you are bumped from a space.

You are discovering artists, buying art, increasing the fame of the artists, attracting customers and fulfilling orders. I really liked the attracting customers into the lobby then the gallery part of the game.

I think Ian won?

It all fits together really well. This is a game to put on your watchlist, everybody!

Next Mal ran Ian, Mike and I though this 'bag-building' game.

You draw chips out of the bags, each representing a different character (like a knight, a farmer or a scholar etc). Different combinations can achieve different actions, getting you more characters to add to your bag.

It's a lot of fun! And a deluxe version is on Kickstarter right now, if you are interested!

I won this one by building lots of guildhouses. My only win of the day.

Finally I taught this new game from Lookout, designed by the designers of The Village, to Amy, Adrian and Tim.

The board shows a bunch of islands surrounded by a track of action spaces around the outside. A set of gondolas move around the action spaces, but (mostly) cannot access the spaces occupied by other gondolas. So it's partially a game of denying your opponents too.

You build roads, glass factories, shops and palaces on the islands depending on the goal cards you have picked up and try to score maximum points for the end.

Adrian managed to beat me by just one point in a very exciting final scoring!

This was probably my favourite game of the night!

Jason won with his octopod clearing machine, I came second, and I don't remember what order Richard and Tim finished in.

Geoff, Amy and a lady whose name I don't remember had just finished their first game of this and were about to play again when they invited me to join in. Possibly they regretted that later when I won by quite a lot... but then it's hardly my fault that they kept leaving spaces open for me. whistle

(There was another game of Tokaido directly after as well, but I chose to sit out in favour of dinner)

A very close game - scores were 80:80:80:78:77 - and apparently El Grande has no tie breaker.

I had an early lead after the first scoring round which resulted in a fair bit of picking on me until I slipped down to 4th. Mark had the lead after the second scoring round yet came in last. Peter and Stuart who had been at the back for almost of the game, managed to sneak ahead in the 9th round and then tied with Oliver in final scoring. Great game - and hopefully I learnt a few tricks for next time.

We had a 5 player game of Kremlin which provided plenty of laughs, especially when an 80+ year old character almost fought their way back into power after having been purged from the Politburo and exiled to Siberia. Peter's faction came close to getting 3 waves, but a late run saw my faction win in the 10th round, after having barely featured in the early to mid parts of the game.

I drag this along with me all the time, and found some suckers to play this week

I played Minions of Cthulhu + Aliens, and the other players were Time Travellers + Mad Scientists, Killer Plant + Vampires and Zombies + Elder Things.

I lost to the other experienced player (Elder Zombies) by a single turn (as usualcry). But the other, newer players did pretty well too once they picked it up.

Was about to go get lunch before I saw a game of this had just started and I was able to sit in.

Despite having to deal with awful black cards right from the start, we won!

Sure, Arthur died, and we lost Excalibur, making it probably the shoddiest Camelot story ever told, but I'll take it.

I think this was my favourite game of the night. Though it made me question what way left was a disturbing amount of times.

I didn't do too awfully. I fell off the arena during the second round, but got an excellent hand third round and was able to mooch floor effects perfectly, ending all but next to the first checkpoint.

Spinbot spent a lot of time spinning, appropriately.

Steve, myself and another lady (I'm sorry but I missed the name) tried out Tim's copy of

Camel Up

It was a fun little game in which you basically bet on the outcome of a camel race. Our race pretty much had a run away leader and loser (camels) so the betting choices were fairly limited. I would like to try it again but with more players next time. Thx to Tim for letting us try it out

whilst we were waiting for other tables to finish up.

I've seen it around before and seems like I've got a lot more learning to do with this one. I'd be happy to play it again as a filler but can't see myself taking it up seriously. Nothing against Mark's teaching

Expedition: Famous Explorers

My 2nd Wolfgang Kramer for the day (El Grande the other). Mark took this one out leading the 3 available expeditions routes over to all of his destinations 1st.

Finding the destinations on the map can be a bit tricky at times (especially with my poor eyesight cool whistle and the extra travel destinations on the side which get replenished upon completion), I'd be up for another game but this for me isn't in the same league as El G, I guess I prefer placing cubes over arrows?

Mal, Pete and myself played three (maybe four?) games of this.
I enjoy it quite a bit, but for me it doesn't touch Race for the Galaxy. The sheer number of options you have in Race with any hand of cards is what makes it for me, and using cards as currency always makes for difficult decisions. The two player variant for Race (two actions each) also works way better than the extra phase die that this uses in two player games.

All that aside, this is a very fun game that I'm looking forward to playing more of. The major benefit this has over Race is that it's far easier to teach.
