A small group* of volunteers has been working to get more Japanese games onto BGG. There is a huge amateur scene in Japan, with what they call doujin publishers, coterie circles producing their own games. They put a lot of work in and the production qualities are amazing. At the Nov 2014 Tokyo Game Market (TGM), there were over 340 exhibitors (update: at the Dec 2016 TGM, there were over 600 exhibitors: at the Dec 2017 TGM, it was now a two-day show and over 700 exhibitors). update 2019 TGM is a two day show now with around 900 exhibitors.

But for good reasons, it's a scene that largely stays in Japan. Games are made in Japanese in small print runs, and sold in the few game shops, online or at TGM. They have their own gaming websites and have no real need to be on BGG too. It's extra work for little gain.

There is an interest though. But a lot of BGG's ways are obscure to the newcomer, and it is even harder if English is not your first language. So we built some Google forms in Japanese
and used the information submitted by Japanese game designers to enter their games. http://goo.gl/ZjyWbq #ゲムマ (EDIT: Contact me if you want the same form in English).

So far, it has been a very modest success. This is the result.

I am happy to announce that an upload form in Spanish is also available now for Latin American games. You can find it here: http://bit.ly/BGGformulario. I will create a geeklist as soon as I have the first entries. That might still take a moment, I will have to spread the word.

Our first successful entry. We were testing our forms and this was the first game submitted. From this, we learnt to ask for Romanji on the forms.

This is a deduction game for adults.

Another early test, this one went easily but we learnt more about writing Descriptions. Getting a good description is hard anyway (just check out the family Better Description Needed!). Getting a good translation of a Japanese description adds a layer. But we're getting better.

No image. That's another hurdle. That's getting crossed.

Another early tester and a surprise as they submitted a children's game. Of course! We learnt too to distinguish board and card games from TRPGs, as there is a certain cross-over with Japanese gamers. So we made it clearer that we could only do board games, not TRPGs.

There's also a cross-over with PC games, and many doujin games take their themes or characters from other published works. Which is acceptable there, as it stimulates the industry and gives a platform for new talent and ideas.

A personal coup for me, as ガーデンゲームズ (The Garden Games) was one of the doujin publishers I had seen online but couldn't fathom their games. Going after these doujin circles is real down-the-rabbit-hole stuff. One thing leads to another and another, but it's all very confusing.

So I was very pleased when the designer 樫尾忠英 (Kashio Tadahide) submitted all five of his games. And as a BGG user, he also quickly uploaded the photos and made them representative too. This is again one of the obscure elements of BGG. Kashio knew but we learnt that we have to write more notes and encourage designers to provide photos and files.

More Work! was the constant cry.

And trying to explain the Categories and Mechanics, what a nightmare. Toshiya has done huge work on this but it's still hard to get the details correct. We write, and re-write and translate and re-translate. Very tricky business all round.

EDIT: This is being produced in a new edition with new artwork.

Another aspect of the Japan scene is microgames. You'll be familiar with Love Letter, but producing big games in small packages is a popular idea there. This is one from Garden Games.

Another tricky element is when to use Romanji and when to use English. With most of the games being made in Japanese only, the primary name would be in Japanese. But BGG requires the Latin alphabet, and so we use a Romanji version of the Japanese name as primary, and put the Japanese text as alternate. If the game is in Japanese and English, or has an English name anyway, we can just use that and disregard the Romanji.

But if the primary name is Romanji, should we also ask the designer to give an English name to the game? After all, it's a lot easy for me to remember Poor Potter than Binbou-Tougeika. Well, we don't have a solid answer. If the designer offers an English title, it can go on as alternate. But we're not requiring one. BGG doesn't apply English versions for other languages, only when there's an English edition.

And here's another pleasing entry. We got ShownanRocketiaz onto BGG. They have a ton of games, and two were already on the Geek, but with no designer or publisher listed. We got them fixed and added two more games.

Which lead to a discussion of when is a game and new Game or a new Version? We had to kick that one around a bit so we were clear what constituted a new entry. So this is a follow-up to a previous game and gets it's own page.

Here's another designer Ryo Fukushima that was already on BGG, but we helped get his details tidied up, and another game submitted. This time, the English name went as primary, though it's not actually on the game. Poetic, though.

This is another game which has a fresh Version. Often these games are made in small print runs, and then *if* they are re-printed, improvements can be made. I'm reminded very strongly of the German scene in the 90s, designers like Friedemann Friese producing just 500 copies of a game. Now look where they are. The Japanese scene has the same potential.

Note too that the designer has uploaded rules files as well.

This game has two designers, one being Takashi Sakaue who already has games on BGG. His company had a stand at Essen last year too, separately from the usual Japonbrand display.

What's interesting here is that this new game is an ENG/JP product, with full English in the game. So already professional producers are seeing value in the English speaking market.

Also, Twitter is big in Japan, very big. So designers and publishers do a lot of promoting on Twitter.

Another action style game, this time from the group ChagaChaga Games. ChagaChaga is one of the bigger doujin circles, their games sell a lot at TGM, and one of them Dungeon Busters has just been re-issued in English. (Note to self, add the earlier version...)

So that's where we've got to. Not many games, but not bad for a couple of months and a lot of translation work. But we are largely preaching to the converted, designers already on BGG or familiar enough. It's harder to get deeper into the doujin scene when they have enough sites in Japan and don't really need this too. But plans are afoot, and this is really just the first steps.
