Let's face it, most TV series translations into boardgames these days are all about trivia. You can't walk by a game shelf at Target or Wal-Mart without seeing at least five current show trivia games. Fortunately, I have no such TV trivia games in my collection so you won't see them here.

Anyway, I did my Movie to Boardgame geeklist: Cardboard Celluloid - My ten favorite (barely) playable movies to boardgame and it demonstrated that there aren't a lot of great movies converted into a highly desirable boardgame. So I searched my collection and came up with 10 games I have based on TV series. Overall, I think there's a much better selection with an even better following for some of these, along with a higher "fun factor".

I managed to get a copy of the whole series on Bluray and thoroughly enjoyed this show. The game does a fantastic job of melding Blood and Sand with Gods of the Arena. Throw in the expansions and all the major players are there. The game probably hits a sweet spot with 4 or 5 players but you can get by with just 3.

The one-season wonder show that everyone mourns its cancellation. I never got into it until I saw the movie Serenity and then went back and watched all the series. I agree it suffered an early and undeserving death. There was so much more material they could have expanded upon. Anyway, for the fan club there's this game which I consider better than Xia and fans of the show will probably enjoy it just as much. Be good, be bad, complete missions, collect fame and money, manage your crew. It's all good and received continued support through its expansions.

Top Notch! This one sets the standard for having a traitor in the midst. Everyone seems to get thrown into jail at one point or another and it's a tense struggle to stay ahead of the Cylons. The theme of the show carries over well into this one and it's one of the better TV shows to make it into boardgame format.

The latest newcomer onto the scene with traitor options. I've never seen any of the series but as a game, I'm impressed. Maybe there's a traitor, maybe not. It's a tough call at the end whether to make an accusation or let things lie and see where the extra points may fall. Picking out a traitor may not always be an easy task and there's plenty to do with recruiting agents, troops, etc. to stifle the creep of terrorism. I think there's room for both this and BSG on the game shelf.

Of all the WD games out there, I favor this one the best. The Woodbury expansion added a bit more of one season for more variety of locations. I like the way someone gets to be the sheriff for the turn and there's tough card use decisions to be had. As for the show, it's lost its luster for me of late. It just seems like more of the same with no end goal in sight. Time to start watching Z-Nation for a while.

Remember this one? Excellent game that probably still retains a strong cult following. It was fun to play as well with an interesting board and familiar locations. My wife was more into this series than I ever was. I prefer the Zed biters to vamps.

The setting of South Dakota for this game is the same as the one from the HBO series. I think the show holds the record for stating the word "fuck" and all it's derivatives more than any other show over it's lifetime including The Sopranos. I didn't see it printed anywhere in the game's rulebook so the theme of the show is totally lost. Oh, and the tile for the whorehouse is missing in my copy as well. But as a boardgame, it's not entirely bad and makes for a more family friendly worker placement Euro style game.

At least this one has Kirk and Spock on the cover. There are a few other good Trekie games out there but this one probably does best at telling a story and discovering new worlds much like the original TV series. Star Trek: Fleet Captains does a good job and has a high toy factor with the minis but this one is more fond in my heart.

Basically they took Fleets and threw the SG-1 name on it. It doesn't do justice to the series and is just an average space combat game. For a more thematic rendition of the series there's Stargate SG-1: La Vengeance d'Apophis which I've never been able to get my hands on a copy.

Given the animated crap that passes for children's entertainment these days, I don't feel so bad when looking back at this one. I wanted something retro from that animated series in my collection and of all the Puff games out there, I think this one had the most "game" in it. You need to defeat the villain and things get easier when you work together, so there's even an early co-op element to it before co-op was a thing.
