Ian, Mal and I launched into a game of this well regarded, lighter war game to start the day, after planning to play it for quite some time.

An hour and a halfish to learn the rules, and in the ballpark of a three hour game, I managed to scrape together an early win at the halfway point of the game (with Mal being not far off points-wise, but not having much of an army left standing).

There is lots to like about this game - the combat system is one of the most interesting I've come across, using cards with standard suits and restricting the players to following the trumps of the area of the board they battle from means having to be careful to always position yourself where you have an advantage.

The way the three players armies work is fascinating two. Ian played as Austria, who had a large homeland to defend, and only a few points to get out on the board, seemed to be favoured for an early victory.

Mal controlled two aligned armies, the French and... Someone else I can't be bothered looking up now, had a larger presence on the second, smaller map.

I meanwhile played three armies, two aligned with Mal, and one aligned with Ian. This also meant I had two different goals to achieve (anyone could win if they got all of their victory point chips on the board, this is mostly done by capturing cities).

On top of that, there was an interesting politics round before each turn, secret numbers of troups in our armies and an election where I, the player aligned with both armies, had to vote in favour of one or the other.

I will say, though I really enjoyed the play, I felt a slump towards the end where I maintain we were pretty much going through the motions and I was essentially unstoppable. Not through amazing play, mind you, but because all of us were new to the game, and just trying things out.

Ian took crippling early losses which made my push much easier, and on the other map Mal and Ian both wiped each other out before I could even make it to them.

Anyway, I would play again for sure, though I'm not in a hurry too.

The successor to Glory to Rome?

Not sure about that.

Mal, Ian and I (all fans of Glory to Rome) sat down to give the print and play version of this game a test run. The game is still being tweaked (in fact a major change happened over night after we played it that I suspect would be an improvement) so it's not a final verdict, but in general:

The game is much faster than most games of Glory to Rome (sometimes odd things can come up and GtR can finish quickly). The fact that you don't 'spend' your resources in this game makes it feel like your engine ramps up quicker, and more strongly. (Not sure if I put that in the 'pro' or 'con' column yet).

What I do really like is the similar system to Impulse with the action selection. That was by far the best thing about Impulse for me, in a game that otherwise left me cold.

I'm open to playing more of the game, but I'm not in love with it. Yet.

Edit: Forgot to mention that I won.

Next up, after months of trying to set a date, I finally taught Warren this weird hybrid of deck-building, area control, hidden roles, etc etc.

I was joined by Mal, Tim and Stu, who had all played at least once before.

I've also managed to get my teaching time right down - Not an easy feat for this game!

Anyway, this was one of the best games of this I've had - Every player was in the lead at least once and both teams constantly fluctuated between being the eliminated team or the winning team.

Also, we had zombies appear (though only two were on the board at game's end) and lots of agents, making for a very busy board.

The game ended with the War track hitting the top, Mal, Tim and I were eliminated, leaving Stu in first place for the win, and Warren at least celebrating his team's victory over the humans.

Love, love, love this game.

I hastely read the rules to this before I left and... Well, I didn't have a good grasp on them at all (slightly complicated by trying to use the variant scoring as well, which I really should have ignored on the first play - But I didn't want to go find a pen and paper ;P ).

Anyway, luckily Mal (I think it was?) picked upt he rule book and spotted my mistakes and we did a do-over with the correct rules (Well, mostly? At the end, I think we realised the number two card probably meant replacing one of the scoring cards that would come out the next round, rather than adding to the cards?)

Everyone was very patient and no-one flipped the table, so I appreciate that.

Stu won, though we only played one round (instead of three).

It's a very quick and light game that would improve as you get familiar with the cards. Worthwhile, I say!

Finally Mal, Stu and I sat down to my favouritest game.

It was really great to play with all experienced players - It's one of the hardest games to teach I have - though it meant we kept the game going for a long time, not allowing anyone to successfully topple (there is a variant that helps this, but we couldn't remember the exact rules, and decided to play the 'regular' rules. Even though this is a Phil Eklund game, and there's no such thing).

It was a long game, and came down to a gold scoring, which I managed to win.

Great game and a great way to end the night!

First up a large group played 2 games of the resistance

First one without the plot thickens cars, second with. The general consensus was that the extra cards made the game more interesting.

This was my first time playing and I enjoyed myself.

I really like this game, simple rules but with a couple of layers of strategy. Plus the results are generally fairly close.

It doesn't outstay it's welcome either.

Leon brought out his copy of the game and taught it to two newbies (Myself and one other) and went over the rules again for Stuart.

Game ran pretty smoothly with us all getting the hang of the arrangements and point scoring mechanisms on the various cards.

End score was Stuart on 96, Selwyn on 95, Leon on 89, and I think the other score was in the 80s as well. Pretty close scores for a first game.

A few people moved around, and David and a lady joined us for a couple of games of King of Tokyo.

The first game was rather brutal with the monsters in Tokyo managing to eliminate some of the ones in the countryside on the same turn.

Eventually Phil (my Kraken) came through for the win by eliminating the remaining montsers.

The second game started bloodily with two monsters eliminated early. The other three slowly wore each other down until Phil (my Kraken) came through for his second win (on points).

I think this was actually played before King of Tokyo.

A simple yet entertaining game of animal racing where each of the animals moves in a different way. First three to cross the line score points for the people holding their 'betting' cards. Best of three races wins.

4 Player game (Leon, Stuart, Selwyn, and the aforementioned lady whose name I did not catch).

Everyone got dealt a pile of trash destinations that did not lie close to each other, a trend that continued throughout the game as people drew new tickets.

I eventually won after completing my 4 destinations and just throwing down long routes to claim points. As per normal, the triggering of the final round caught most people 1 action short of completing tickets or placing a long track

I picked this up at 40% off when Good Games in Cannington had a sale.

A much simpler, quicker, more deadly version of Robo-Rally with robots using three dice which are placed on a movement or shooting dial to determine their actions. The game is the first to five VP, which can come from eliminating a robot (through pushing off the board or into a pit, or dealing the third point of damage to a robot), or still being on the designated number after ALL actions in the round have been taken (so very much harder than it sounds).

The first game was 4 players with Keith, Stuart, myself and (Chris?). Was quite a bloody affair with robots being pushed off the board all over the place.

The second game with just 3 (Keith, Stuart, and myself) saw the VP for ending the turn on the designated number being claimed just the once, before Keith emerged with the win by carefully blowing the ever-loving crap out of any robot that tried to score that VP

I think Keith pulled this out about 9pm or so, and offered to teach it to Stuart and myself. Despite the hour I was keen to learn why this is so highly regarded, and with the offer from Keith to teach it I was ready to jump in.

A big thanks to Keith for such a thorough explanation, and continued guidance throughout the game.

While I did take the win, I enjoyed the mechanisms in the game and how each building unlocked various income streams. I really do want to play this more, although there is no way I could comfortably teach it to a group yet.

So thanks again Keith, you may have influenced me to take the plunge and buy my own copy

We next then moved onto card south seas. I really enjoy tile placement games and seeing that this iteration was in the newbie box I had to try it. It was fun definitely different from the base game and the resource trading aspect along with a little player interaction with the fishermen definitely makes it interesting. However I think there is more player interaction in gold rush so, prefer that over south seas. I am looking forward to see what the next one in the series will be? Down under? Africa? Or even china with great walls instead of roads?

My engine was pretty sad and we were all trounced by a good 30 points by Amy who had a veritable army of meeples in the last round vs my 4.

I was the ghost giving out clues Wow was it hard to not yell at the so called psychic investigators as they jumped straight to wrong conclusions or worse yet watch as someone sweet talks a person from the bang on right answer to the most opposite one they could choose at all.

Great game definitely looking forward to seeing what asmode does with the reprint English edition.

After the 3rd age and the (scoring) dust had settled, it was David and his mass of blue victory cards that ended up winning on 59, over Mark on 53, Kent 46, Warren 44 and me 39.

Warren taught David, Kent and I this worker placement game, one of the games in the WABA Starter Tubs of Games. Once we got our head around it, the game seemed to flow quite smoothly (assisted in a large part by Warren's teaching and Mark's assistance).

Mark came out on top with 137, followed by David on 129, Kent 127, Warren 118 and me 110.
