I find that I enjoy games with cards that can be used for multiple purposes (as money, for an ability, as a resource, as health, etc). I like the "agony of choice" when I have to decide how to use a great card. I am not talking about games like Port Royal where I have no choice in how the card is used. I am strictly speaking about having cards either in your hand or tableau and trying to determine the best way to maximize their usefulness.

Please list a game and explain how the cards can be used in multiple ways.

Imperial Settlers is already mentioned in the list, but this one is very special in terms of card use. Each card can be used in 4 ways: to collect spoils (which bring one time bigger income), to create cooperation (which brings often smaller income), to build and use this building henceforth, and just change 2 cards for one another.

I'm certainly no expert, having only watched a view videos and then impulse-buying the game right after, but this also seems to fit.

Cards are traits for your species, but they are also used to fill the watering hole with food every round (each card has a certain food value on the bottom). You can also discard a card to start a new species or grow an existing one.

That seems to qualify them for "multi-purpose," and it definitely means the game presents some interesting dilemmas with a hand of cards. Which do you use as food? Do you want a new/bigger species? If so, what are you willing to give up? Etc.

Cards have three major uses:
Playing on your tableau in an attempt to build a high scoring and beautiful path of trees.

Keeping them in your hand to try to win a point majority to gain the right to score your beautiful path. You can't score any points fora tree type if you play them all to your tableau.

Hording them to keep points from your opponents.

Another Chudyk classic that uses multi-use cards.

Cards can be face down and used as points, they can be played to your tableau and used for the symbol and their texts (covering up any old cards of the same color), or they can be tucked under the card stack of the same color to be used only for symbols at a later time.

The expansion also adds the ability to take a card from hand and use it as an achievement in certain circumstances.

Good stuff.

Cards are used to represent an attraction in your tableau or to pay for them. Another use for cards, which you however you cannot decide any other use for at that point, is that they also represent visitors to your attractions.

Every card in a player's deck (character, support, event, or conspiracy) can be used instead as a "resource" to build the domains that must be triggered to pay for playing other cards. In a well-designed deck, the initial draw often occasions agonized choices, as the player must decide which cards will be resourced and which will be kept to play as characters, etc.

The requirement of a "resource match" when playing cards also puts an organic check on diversity of factions within decks, but there are no arbitrary limits about combining factions.

Each card has three uses:

1) As a unit. Deploy it and it fights and captures territory.
2) As a one-time effect printed upside down on the bottom of the card.
3) As a die-roll. Each card had 1-6 value printed on it, and effects would require you to make a roll by flipping the top card of your deck.

Really disappointed that this didn't make its return in Warhammer 40k: Conquest.

The group cards usually have just one use - take control of them for whatever it is they give you (income, power, special ability, or just a step closer to victory). Although there could be a second use - to destroy the group, in case that's useful to you (which it is in certain circumstances).

But more importantly - the Special Cards, which can be used for the special ability printed on them, or they can be used to make a privileged attack.

I was surprised not to see this one on the list, already.

Skill cards can be used for in game effects or to pass skill checks.

It's never fun to be a pilot with a Maximum Firepower or Evasive Maneuvers card in your hand and a swarm of Cylons around the ship and have a skill check come up that needs high number of Red cards to pass. robot

This one can stand in for the GMT COIN Series. They are similar to CDGs, but with some twists. Rather than having a hand of cards, all powers share one deck. Most cards have two events, benefitting different powers in the game; they also have a list of which powers have first choice to use it.

Each turn, one card (drawn from the deck) will be in play. That card may be used once for operations and once for the event (by different powers). Once a power has done either one, they are ineligible to participate in the next card. So in practice, you will usually see two powers participating in one card, then the other two on the next.

However, events are revealed one card in advance, so sometimes a power will pass (even though eligible) in order to get in on the next card. This is always a challenging decision!

I'll let this classic stand in for all card-driven wargames. Each card may be played either for its event or for more mundane uses (usually called Operations, though PoG divides that into Operations, Reinforcements, and Strategic Redeployment.) This Geeklist, from 2012, has a pretty good list of CDGs, along with deck analyses.

The astute observer will note that Twilight Struggle, Labyrinth, 1989, and (I believe) 1960 use a slight variant of this system.
