The Origins Game Fair takes place June 3-7, 2015 in Columbus, Ohio, and this Geeklist highlights titles that, to the best of my knowledge, will (1) debut at Origins 2015, (2) be newly released just before the convention, or (3) be available in demo/preview form. To add titles to this list (or send me general game news for coverage on BGG News), please write to me at wericmartin AT gmail.com. Thanks!

• In addition to what's listed below, not to mention countless other titles in the Mayfair Games library, you can keep your eyes open for designer Coleman Charlton at Mayfair's "Git Together" event in the evening and at select times in the hall during the day. Charlton will preview the following titles during the con:

Five Year Mission, a cooperative game in which players take on the roles of the crew of the USS Enterprise from the original Star Trek series or of the USS Enterprise-D from Star Trek: Next Generation.

Booty, in which cutthroat pirates seek treasure at any cost.

Mystery, with players trying to solve murders using innovative card mechanisms. Notes Mayfair's Chuck Rice, "This game is licensed from the legendary PBS series Masterpiece Mystery and features art from the amazing Edward Gorey."

Description:

Star Trek: Five-Year Mission is a cooperative dice placement game for 3-7 players who take the roles of crew members of either the USS Enterprise (from the original Star Trek series) or the USS Enterprise-D (from Star Trek: The Next Generation). Each crew member has a different ability and the crew’s abilities differ for each crew.

In these roles, players try to cooperatively solve a series of blue (easy), yellow (medium) and red (difficult) alerts to score points, attempting one of 6 different difficulty levels to win before failing five such alerts, or the Enterprise being destroyed. Players must deal with injuries which lock dice out of play, ship damage that can force players to attempt harder alerts, urgent events that must be completed in 3 minutes, the prime directive, as well as yellow and red alerts that force additional alerts cards to come into play pushing you closer to failing.

Other Information: • Available for demo games during Origins 2015, as noted in the publisher section above.

Description:

In Munich at the end of the 19th century, the successful new tramway needs expansion, and the two opposing players in Trambahn are competing for the contract.

To do this, in a grid marked by cards players use their cards in three different ways: as passengers on the trams, as suggested stops on new routes to be built, and as money to pay for these routes. When laying out cards for suggested stops, players need to both match colors and build them in ascending order — but they also need to bring passengers to this tram line in order to score victory points for it.

The cards resemble postcards that feature street cars in Munich and historical parts of the city.

Other Information: • Apparently Trambahn made it onto the pallet in time to debut at Origins. Something else to check out there!

Description:

Battle Merchants: New Kingdoms, an expansion for Battle Merchants, features an alternative Kingdom Card deck that replaces the game's existing Kingdom Cards. A few cards remain the same as originally published, but the deck includes many new cards and a few updates to existing cards.

This expansion also features a couple of new rules and Craft Tracker cards that allow all players to easily show the Craft levels of all of their weapons.

Other Information: • Debuting at Origins 2015 at the Formal Ferret Games stand (354).

• Notes designer/publisher Gil Hova: "It's a POD product from DriveThruCards, so it normally comes with 'tiles' that the user would cut with scissors. But for Origins, I'll be selling the expansion with nice mounted tiles."

He adds, "I'll be selling the expansion on its own, as well as in a bundle with the base game. I'll also be demoing the expansion at the booth all weekend. For people who haven't played the base game yet, I designed the expansion so that you can learn it along with the base game."

Description:

For centuries, the factions have been at war. However, it wasn’t until recently that they discovered the ability to create a bomb so powerful as to destroy entire planets. But now the secret is out, and it’s a race to see which faction will crown themselves as the superior race.

Players will take turns flying (flicking) their space ships around space, collecting energy to power up space bombs and eradicate their enemies.

The goal of the game is to be the player with the most points at the end of the game proving that their alien species is the supreme race.

Other Information: • Designer Matt Loomis will have the Cosmic Kaboom prototype on him at Origins 2015, and if you're interested in checking out the game, contact him by email (topdeck@gmail.com) or Twitter (@mrtopdeck) to arrange a meeting place and time.

Description:

You are a Dragon. Like all respectable dragons you must find yourself a Princess and horde some treasure. There are some nearby towns just ripe for the plunder. You must strafe these villages with your dragonflame until they submit and hand over their treasures. But of course, you're not the only Dragon out there!

In DragonFlame you will take turns placing 3 cards on to the Castle cards in the center of the table. This will create piles of cards that you will get to choose from at the end of the round. The pile you choose will also determine your turn order for the next round.

Once you've taken a pile you place the cards in front of you for end game scoring. Any DragonFire cards you have acquired give you the ability to flame the villages for a area-control over these cards (more victory points).

Since sometimes you may place a card face down, this becomes a game of reading the other players and choosing the right (sometimes poisoned) piles. Do you take that pile with a lot of cards and risk the minus points or just go for the safe face up treasures?

There are several types of treasures to collect. You will only score 1 of the types of chests and the others count against you. Some treasures are just straight forward points. Some are even powerful magic items with special abilities.

Other Information: • Designer Matt Loomis will have the DragonFlame prototype on him at Origins 2015, and if you're interested in checking out the game, contact him by email (topdeck@gmail.com) or Twitter (@mrtopdeck) to arrange a meeting place and time.

Description:

The universe is about to collapse, and your final hope lies in an ancient mysterious artifact, the Ovoid. Whoever controls this "cosmic egg" can shape the birthing of the next universe according to their own agenda. Players are secret agents from a handful of surviving worlds, zipping from planet to planet in special “amnion suits” that allow for interstellar travel, space combat and planetary landings.

Each planet has its own envelope of cards. When you arrive on a planet, you decide which cards you want to take and which to leave behind. Knowledge is the most powerful resource in the game, and being able to predict the cards your opponents possess at any given time is a powerful advantage as you build up a handful of weapons, tactical gear, vaults and traps, as well as cards that counter your opponents' cards. The best players will keep their hand fluid, constantly changing tactics while they search from world to world for the Ovoid or find a safe place to stash it.

Balance your hand of cards, spend your turn actions wisely, and cleverly use your special alien powers to stay one step ahead of your opponents. When the Chaos Clock reaches zero, only the player who possesses the Ovoid will become master of the new universe.

Other Information: • Debuting at Origins 2015 after being shipped to Kickstarter backers.

Description:

Clockwork Kingdom is a game in which each player takes the role of a lord attempting to claim the throne in the wake of the king's death. To start the game, each player has a small army of loyal steam-powered automatons to do their bidding. Each player must choose where to send his servants, whether to get supplies from the market, build useful contraptions in the workshop, or even attempt to acquire powerful alchemy stones, all the while warring with opponents in a number of battlefields in an attempt to control the kingdom by force.

However, players have more at their disposal than simple automatons. Throughout the course of the game, players can also recruit Alchemists, Professors, and Artificers to their cadre of loyal vassals, each with their own unique abilities. To claim the Clockwork Throne, players must make difficult decisions to outwit their opponents in an attempt to gather resources, obtain workers, manufacture contraptions, and dominate battlefields.

Description:

Our aspiration to omnipotence has led to the enhancement of our capacities so far beyond our species' limits that we created our genetic successors. Inevitably, the evolved reached their first realization as a unified entity: the extinction of humanity as we know it.

Posthuman pits you as one of the last human survivors in a world where nature is reclaiming the planet and our evolved offspring are working to eradicate us. Will you resist mutation and survive, or give in to the inevitable and join the evolved?

In the game, players are humans on a solitary journey to a promised safe house. This journey takes them through ten zones, with the zones being tile-based and randomly generated. As they travel, they encounter each other, other humans, and posthuman mutants. Encounters with mutants may inflict scars, and the more scars players have, the less human they are and the more posthuman they become. Will they strive to cling to their humanity and make a run for the safe house, winning the game? Or will they give in to the ever more tempting mutation, join the posthuman, and deny the win from the rest of the humans?

Description:

The King is dead, and all are making their play for power. From the depths of the kingdom, armies are on the move, castles are being fortified, and war is in the air. The General and the Heir, the Fiend and the Vizier, the Barbarian and the Dark One — all prepare to take the land by force. Only the bold shall survive in this realm of heroes!

Realm of Heroes is a strategy game based in Western fantasy in which players build castles and recruit heroes to fight for their cause. Players not only move against each other, but also must deal with an evolving board that can derail the best laid plans. Using minimal luck, Realm of Heroes is a game in which a player on top can find himself in a rapidly collapsing position.

After the map is set up (either by scenario or at random), each player places his leader and a tower on the map. During a player's turn, existing plague may spread to nearby locations. Second, unsupported heroes die and are replaced by plague. Third, players may reinforce their position by placing or upgrading units on the map. Finally, players move some, none or all of their heroes around the map to capture more territory, destroy other heroes and capture the other players' leaders to win the game.

Do you have what it takes to emerge victorious in this Realm of Heroes?

For example, you win 6 points if you and another player can coordinate a Horse costume... but lose 3 points if you go as just a Horse's bottom.

Description:

Game Election is a simple and intuitive card game to help a group of 3-6 players decide which game to play in a fun and fair manner.

The 54 card deck is comprised of six different sets of nine cards (YEA, DOUBLE YEAH, NAY, and VETO), and four of the cards have special powers such Cancel a Vote and Break Ties. But the powers have consequences: swap another player's cast vote and they get to chose your color/faction in the winning game!

Gameplay is fast: players nominate up to 8 games and then place their votes in a face-down pile in front of the game. They may then use their one remaining card's special power... if they choose.

Other Information: • Debuting at Origins 2015.

• Available for a discounted price of $8 or as part of a two-game package with Costume Party for $15.

114. Board Game: Stockpile [Average Rating:7.56 Overall Rank:310]
Designed by:
Published by:
Number of players: 2 − 5
Playing time: 45 minutes
Suggested ages: 13 and up
Categories:
Mechanics:
Language:

Description:

Stockpile is an economic board game that combines the traditional stockholding strategy of buy low, sell high with several additional mechanisms to create a fast-paced, engaging and interactive experience.

In Stockpile, players act as stock market investors at the end of the 20th century hoping to strike it rich, and the investor with the most money at the end of the game is the winner. Stockpile centers on the idea that nobody knows everything about the stock market, but everyone does know something. In the game, this philosophy manifests in two ways: insider information and the stockpile.

First, players are given insider information each round. This information dictates how a stock’s value will change at the end of the round. By privately learning if a stock is going to move up or down, each player has a chance to act ahead of the market by buying or selling at the right time.

Second, players purchase their stocks by bidding on piles of cards called stockpiles. These stockpiles will contain a mixture of face-up and face-down cards placed by other players in the game. In this way, nobody will know all of the cards in the stockpiles. Not all cards are good either. Trading fees can poison the piles by making players pay more than they bid. By putting stocks and other cards up for auction, Stockpile catalyzes player interaction, especially when potential profits from insider information are on the line.

Both of these mechanisms are combined with some stock market elements to make players consider multiple factors when selling a stock. Do you hold onto a stock in hopes of catching a lucrative stock split or do you sell now to avoid the potential company bankruptcy? Can you hold onto your stock until the end of the game to become the majority shareholder, or do you need the liquidity of cash now for future bidding? Do you risk it all by investing heavily into one company, or do you mitigate your risk by diversifying your portfolio?

In the end, everyone knows something about the stock market, so it all comes down to strategy execution. Will you be able to navigate the movements of the stock market with certainty? Or will your investments go under from poor predictions?

Description:

In Ashes: Rise of the Phoenixborn, a two-player expandable card game, players take on the roles of Phoenixborns, demi-gods and protectors of this world. These characters are the great saviors of their civilizations. Before they came into existence, the humans were plagued by monsters like chimeras that took away their lands and forced them to live in walled-off cities. When the Phoenixborns came, they fought off the chimeras and freed the lands for humans to take over once again.

But the time of peace was short-lived. A prophecy arose that if one Phoenixborn was able to absorb enough Ashes of others, they would ascend into full gods and take mastery over this world. This, as well as humans' greed for land, fueled the War of Ashes. The great cities now fight among each other, each one of them with a Phoenixborn at its helm, and you will decide who will rise and who will fall to ashes.
