Kicked off the day with this mini 4x game with Ian, Pete and Shay. Everyone starts with two meeples and some combination of 6 resources (food, ore and mana). You move around the regions of the board to gather resources and other actions allow you to spend resources to build your tower, research magic (which gives each player race specific powers) or expand your population. If two opposing meeples are in the same region there's a war where resources are spent to determine the winner, and there's the possibility of alliances to share the regions.

The game ends once someone has all their meeples on the board, build the 6th level of their tower, or researches the 5th level of magic. Points are awarded for those 3 things and the most points wins.

Shay stayed out of conflict for the entire game and took the win while I kept fighting with Ian and Pete for resources which took us all out of contention.

Good, quick fun in a tiny box. The second edition and an expansion are on Kickstarter at the moment.

Next up in the series is Tiny Epic Defenders, hopefully at the next Thornlie meet.

This is a 2v2 cube pushing wargame about the American Revolution. One side plays the Americans, one side is the British. Over a possible 8 rounds each player will play cards that allow them to move their armies trying to take or keep control of colonies. Battles are determined by dice. The winner is the side who controls the most colonies at the end of the game.

The twist is in the truce cards which each player has only one of in their deck. Once both players on at least one side have played their truce cards the game will end at the end of the round if at least 3 rounds have been played.

Pete and I as the Americans were forced to play our truce cards in the 2nd round so the game was going to end after round 3. Fortunately we had built up a large lead over Ian and Shay so we were confident we could hang on for the win. What was almost our downfall was the fact that Pete and I had to go first in the final round (determined by random cube draw from a bag) so apart from the will of the dice gods Ian and Shay had complete control over the end game. But fortune smiled on the Americans that day and we held on to win 6-5 after being up 9-3 going into the final rounds.

My highlight of the day. This is a 15ish year old game that was reprinted by Z-Man last year. You play Chinese immigrants trying to buy land, establish businesses and achieve the American Dream!

On the board there are 85 squares representing land. Each turn you will draw a number of cards that give you ownership of particular squares of land. You also draw tiles representing businesses that can be built on the land you own. These businesses include restaurants, tea shops, florists and factories. There are 12 types in total. At the end of each turn you earn money for each business you own on the board, but if you own 2 or more of the same type of business orthogonally adjacent you'll earn even more money.

Before you place the business tiles on land you own there's a negotation phase and this is where the heart of the game lies. Everything is open information and everything is tradable. That includes money, business tiles not yet built, land you own that's not yet built on, and businesses on the board you own. The first 4 turns were fairly cordial but round 5 and 6 really got down to the fine points. There were 3 and 4-way deals being discussed and everything was being bargained down to the smallest denomination of money ($10,000). I think those last 2 turns took twice as long as the first 4.

Shay took the win with 1.19 million over Ian's 1.16 million. Pete was somewhere in the 800,000s and I was a little behind him I think.

The only downside is luck of the draw of the land cards and business tiles. If you're really unlucky you can get screwed with cards and tiles that don't help you and are also not valuable in negotation for your opponents. Still really fun though to try and dig out of those holes.

Sticking with the economic theme here we moved onto Stockpile before dinner. The game has a stock market with 6 companies. Each turn a player is given some inside information consisting of a company and whether it's stock will go up, down or pay dividends. Additionally there is one piece of public information.

Then there are a number of auctions equal to the number of players where you bid for company stocks and action cards that may raise or lower the price of a stock. These auctions are seeded with 1 card from the deck face up and then each player gets to add 2 cards to these auctions, 1 face up and 1 face down.

Each player will win only 1 auction each and then has the opportunity to sell any stock they wish before the public and insider information is applied. If a company value hits 0 everyone discards the stock they had in that company but if it hits 10 the stock splits and is worth double.

It plays for around 6 rounds depending on the number of players and at the end of the game everyone sells their remaining stock and the most money wins. I think Shay won this as well. Should probably stop playing with him.

I thought there was just a little too much hidden information for a stock game, but it's light enough and short enough to still be fun.

Final game of the day with the same group. Each player is a family in the village trying to achieve fame and glory (points).

A turn consists of taking a cube from an area and then completing an action in that area. The areas include a market, church, crafting houses and a few others. The actions will generally give you points, cubes, coins (which are wild cubes), or equipment like a horse or plow. One of the actions allows you to add another person to your family which you'll need because eventually you're older family members are going to die. That's not a bad thing most of the time because that person will go into the village chronicle which can earn you points at the end of the game.

Once the village chronicle is full the game end triggers and every other player gets one final turn.

Pete and Shay went crazy in the market while Ian and I were distracted by the other attractions in the village. I think Pete beat Shay in a tie breaker having sold to more people in the market.

Added part of one of the expansions (lords had personalities) but not the other part of that.

5 players, and didn't actually finish. Took a fair while to get to that point and then the about to win people ended up not doing so since I took a point from them. But at that point a combination of headaches and hunger and one of the players being effectively out meant with didn't finish.

I'm not good at doing the actual politics in this game.

Played this with Kent, Ashton and Ashton's Mother(?).

Played the IOS version a fair bit (recommend it) which translated to being able to teach the game quite well. Would play again, but hopefully with expansion next time!

Kent won, i came second, then Ashton's Mother and then Ashton.

I sat down for a planned teaching game and managed to have 2 pre-committed people and 2 on the day wanting to learn for a 5 player pure base game.

Player X: Galen "Chief" Tyrol
Tim Kirkwood: William (Bill) Adama (starting admiral)
Me: Sharon "Boomer" Valerii
Leah Ieraci: Laura Roslin (starting president)
Player Y: Lee "Apollo" Adama
[Sorry Player X and Player Y for not remembering your names!]

I felt that rule explanation wasn’t as smooth as I had previously done, yet people seemed to understand the main mechanisms (including as I explained more things, including in more details, throughout the game).

We were under way and late in the pre-sleeper phase, three negative colours came up. No one admitted to an error, so at least one cylon was there. Resources were not too bad going into sleeper phase, but as BSG players know, things can drop very quickly. Resources continuing to drop and another spike later with particular colours saw suspicion fall on Apollo, with him revealing soon after. Later, an XO from Chief to the Admiral saw a reveal and sides clearly demarcated. The humans eventually managed to jump to victory with final resources about 3 for fuel, 3 morale, 5 food and 3 population, with the game taking about 3.25 hours from memory (being distracted by flavour text increased the game length).

I hope those who learnt enjoyed it and I’d be interested to hear what they thought – if my teaching sucked, let me know so I can learn better for the future!

Jason finally sleeved the newest Dominion expansion and so we sat down to explore what new things it would bring. We played with a set of 5 Dominion: Adventures supply cards, 2 events and 5 other random supply cards. In the first game, I think Jason won over (in order?) me, Jess and Richard. In the second game (different cards but same setup), I think I took the win over (in order?) Jason, Jess and Mark.

I like the new expansion, but can understand the comments that it moves very far away from the streamline elegance of the base Dominion/the other expansions. There are tokens, specific card upgrading mechanisms, and various effects that I can understand some people being put off by. For me however, I enjoyed playing with this expansion and would be happy to do so in the future.

I learnt this fast, pretty swingy game of hidden loyalties, getting information based on seeing hidden cards and what other people do, and changing the state of things through equipment. It is pretty light, plays reasonably quickly and was fun enough for us to play two times in games of I think 8 and 7 players(?). Personal highlights include being killed as a good cop in game 1 only to be resuscitated as a bad guy, and being the agent in game two and having the kingpin shot twice in successive turns, once a huh? move by everyone on the table, the other a 'shoot him' 'no shoot him!' discussion/argument from everyone else, the gun holder not having enough information.

I also saw this being played by at least two other groups/tables during the day.

A fun deduction game it was my 1st play and had to teach so was quite slow it doesn't help that it is a petty badly structured rule book. 3 player game took about two hours it is a long game. It was fun I am keen to play again, but may put a few plays in before trying the masters variant. I came stone last and at one point looked like I would be finishing on 4 points on a track the goes to 50?? I guess I shouldn't have lied in all my journal publications.

I also recommend that all players have their own device with the app as it did add time passing my phone around and having to unlock it all the time. App worked great and was easy to use.

Jumped in and joined a table playing card line animals. It was a fun filler where you have guess some stats on your animal card by placing them in relation to other animals already played. It was fun but I don't think a keeper as you would learn the stat fairly quickly as you just need to know the relative size, weight so would loose its challenge.

We played a couple more rounds of good cop bad cop with a full compliment of players. Some really did not like the swingyness of the game but it was interesting to see more effect on the game coming from the equipment deck.

The lastly we finished the night off with a couple of games of qwixx a fun little yatze like dice game but you also get to scratch off numbers on your opponents throw however once scratched off you can't scratch off future numbers that are located to the left of the number you just scratched off. Game ends once someone has received 4 penalties or 2 colours have been locked and can no longer be scored.

Fun filler will definitely play again
