There was a fair old turn out for the membership renewal meeting, with some very exotic looking games being played, and a tournament of a 50 year old classic!

We opened with a refresher / teaching game of this classic, and later on we had the tournament.

Stay tuned for the announcement of the first official Nuclear War Tournament in Australia, as far as I'm aware. It's tipped to be running at the Thornlie meeting this month and There Will Be Prizes.

There were prizes for this non-official tournament too, the lucky winner, whose name I can't remember - please help - took home a copy of Nuclear Escalation and the other players got thank you for playing prizes.

Flying Buffalo are currently running the 50th Year Anniversary Edition Kickstarter campaign, so wander over and have a look, seeing as they're kindly sending me prizes for the official tournament.

Tim kindly lent us his set as we'd heard about it and I thought rdmasters might like it.

We had a lot of fun, it has a very cute mechanic, and would make a great convention game.

We were walking out, it being very much the end of the evening and Zoe and David and especially Eric and his dread KILO and another (?) were playing this.

I complained that someone was actually playing a drawing game (this NEVER happens) and I wasn't playing, and the kind souls that they were, invited me and rdmasters.

I love drawing games but no one will play them with me. Until now. I love you all. This is a great game too - and you don't need to be able to draw.

I want this game.

In the first 4 player game, I can't remember who won but am reasonably confident it wasn't me. Kent joined us for the second game and I do remember winning on about 9 points. I think Alex and Mr X enjoyed it.

First up I taught Tim K, Stu and Sandy the basic version of this game of resource management. Buy bricks to convert into buildings to score. It's very much a game of timing.

Seems a little simple at first, but it really reveals itself after more plays and it's really grown on me lately.

I am pretty sure Stu won this one.

Then we were joined by Leah and Tim taught us all this game of bluffing and deduction.

I enjoyed it, but I feel like we weren't playing the bluffing side of the game enough to really get everything out of the game. Hopefully that would just come with more plays.

We played it twice I think.

A neat little push your luck game where all of the players are diving for treasure, but we have a shared, limited supply of air. The more treasure you pick up the more air you use and the slower you move.

We were all too greedy and after three rounds, Sandy was the only player to make it back to the submarine and won.

Then Tim and Stu cooperatively taught this game that I have owned and not played for a year, so it's about time I played it.

Anyway, it's an auction game on top of an area-control/conflict game.

It seems like an odd mix, but it really works. Tim played a couple of d*ck moves early and made enemies of everyone at the table, but still managed to take the win with a clever final move.

Good fun, would like to play some more.

We played this quick filler while we ate dinner in shifts (as the two different dinners were delivered in two waves).

Recruit heroes and try to get six unique ones with limited information about what you can recruit. I like it, especially when you all start using the powers once you get how the game runs.

Tim won at least one of them, I think I won the other?

We had a rule wrong that let Tim screw over myself and Sandy early, but unlike me, Sandy still played really well and won the game.

Great fun, I'd like to play some more, but I think I may enjoy the friendlier Railways of the World?

Next we played this super fun game of bluffing and drawing! With Warren and Issac(?) joining us.

One players assigns a word and a category. All players except the fake artist know what to draw, the fake artist must pretend they know what they are drawing.

A pad is passed around and a player makes a mark then passes it to the next player. It goes around the group twice. (Each player's marker is a different colour so you can easily see who drew what)

You need to draw enough to show the group you know what you are drawing, but not enough to tip off the fake artist what it is you are drawing.

And did you guys know that in the 80+ movies Charlie Chaplin was in, one of them had a dog in it? I'm told it was a dog anyway.

I won when Warren's fake artist gave Dr Who a second head in the last round.

I'm considering this as a win since we figured everything out

I really dislike teaching this. I just seem to not be able to accurately describe the development and adjacency rules.

At the end of the first game, the rules finally clicked. We promptly added a 4th player and played again.

I'm still torn whether or not I like this game

Tim taught this to Oliver, Andrew, Jocelyn and myself (I'd played once before).
I do love this game. Although a great deal of your play is restricted by the cards you draw the actual play experience is superb. Cars slowly pick up mechanical problems to the point where it affects their speed. And every now and then you have the opportunity to pit - do you? Or do you risk racing on? Whole lines of cars snake around the circuit with the odd driver ducking in and out for position. Sometimes a gap will appear and an entire section of vehicles will drop back. Maybe a small breakaway will form and the following racers must work together to pull the leaders back. Excellent stuff.
In our game there was an early incident involving one of my drivers which put a few cars in deep mechanical trouble for the remainder of the race. Jocelyn took advantage and at one stage her entire team of three cars was on its own in the lead. But that extra push had put all three cars into difficulties and they all had to pit under the yellow flag brought out due to debris on the track. From then on it was a close race with every team having a car in the lead group. One of Tims cars made a solo effort to just cross the line bringing the race to a halt. The game is a team game so the race position of every car matters in the final result.
the winner?
Tim.
I think I came last but I don't care, I loved it.

I had just finished playing a game of Star Trek Attack Wing with Keith when Andrew came up to me and asked if I wanted to join in a game of Leader 1. I was aware that Oliver had been trying to organise a game of this on the forum but I had thought that I was not going to be available, otherwise I would definitely have signed up. So I was overjoyed when Andrew asked if I wanted to join!

Oliver taught the game to Andrew and Jocelyn and we settled into the peleton. The course was a good one with a mix of flat sections and climbs. It did seem to favour the climbers however with a long ascent near the finish.
Jocelyn and Andrew broke away early on with a rider each. I had intended to go at the same time but they got the jump on me so I had to wait a moment. I broke away with two riders and set about trying to bridge the gap. I did not succeed but the peleton dropped back, unwilling to chase. There were some more breakaways and eventually the peleton consisted solely of Oliver and Andrews rouleurs who waited until the last downhill section to actually race. They finished last. Meanwhile Andrews initial breakaway rider had managed to shake off Jocelyns racer but was woefully tired from his efforts. Jocelyn and I had formed a group and slowly closed Andrews leading riders down (he had managed to get two together off the front). Both of his riders were very tired. On the final fast descent one of Andrews guys took a nasty corner too quickly and went down. This allowed my team leader to slip by. Andrews lead rider could barely turn a pedal and my leader coasted past him on the final straight for the win. We were playing with team rules so all the riders had to finish before we could determine a winner.
It was me!
An excellent game, both the session and the game itself.
Thank you to Oliver for teaching.

I'd wanted to try this Carl Chudyk game for a while, so I was tickled to see that Tim had brought it along in his stash. Tim was kind enough to teach it and play a round with me and my sons - thanks Tim!

It probably takes a round to grok, and from then on it becomes really fun. Considering the economy of rules and components, it's a very clever game, and you really need to consider your early plays carefully, trying to preserve the size of your hand as best as you can, and build up your tableau while at the same time retaining playable cards that might secure a win in the closing stages.

We played this multiple times, and I think my sons proved to be better at this than me, each coming out with a win. A clever little card game, we really liked the design of this one, and my boys were clamouring for me to buy this immediately afterwards, so it certainly was a hit for us!

25. Board Game: Sushi Go! [Average Rating:7.08 Overall Rank:389]
My family loves drafting games, with Magic the Gathering drafts being a long time favourite in our home, along with games like Fairy Tale and 7 Wonders. But we'd never had opportunity to play this one yet, even though it is simpler than the above-mentioned titles, so our WABA visit was a good opportunity to correct this rather obvious gap in our gaming diet.

The rules are very simple, so it's an excellent fit for the Starter Tub and for introducing to newbies. A bit too simple for my own tastes perhaps, but I can see that it is an excellent game to have on hand for non-gamers, so we may well pick this up at some point soon.

My family had great fun playing this multiple times, and we all loved the minimalist and stylish artwork. Thanks Tim for teaching this to us!
