Ian and I arrived early and set up the room for the AGM, and then as we waited for everyone to arrive, Ian taught me this little card game.

A very simple filler, that relies on forward planning and keeping your options as open as possible. On your turn you either play a card in front of you, play a card in the centre to change the win conditions, or both. You must be winning at the end of your turn, or else you lose.

Ian and I played once (Ian won), the Mark arrived and joined us. We played twice more, with Mark winning first, and me winning the second game.

Neat little game.

After the AGM we went straight into Bruxelles, as Ian had been wanted to revisit it, having just dusted it off recently. I hadn't played it in almost a year and a half, so I needed to be retaught the game - Christophe and Leah joined us, and off we went.

It's a great worker placement game that I think needs at least two plays before you can really see what it is. There's a lot going on, and there's actually a lot of interaction in this Euro. Area majorities, building over spaces to make your opponents grant you a bonus when they use a space, choosing which paintings are currently sellable and setting the cost of the building wheel can all be done in a very mean-spirited way.

And there are lots of paths to victory too.

Christophe went heavily for shield scoring and took a huge early lead. We closed the gap, but not enough to catch him.

I played a lot better this time, and enjoyed the game a lot too.

Next I taught the same group this great game from last year by the designers of Village.

I've posted about ti a couple of times on the WABA geeklists now, so very briefly there's a rondel around the outside to select actions, and several islands the players can build on, while trying to achieve secret goals on cards they purchase.

It was my sixth play of this great underrated game. It is probably my second favourite game from last year (behind the heavier ZhanGuo).

I think I won? To be honest, I don't even remember discussing the winner? Leah had a slight misunderstanding with how the characters scored, and it might have been enough to give her the game otherwise.

Next Ian taught Leah and I this new game from the same designer of Glory to Rome, which is a streamlined version of it, using some new mechanics. Most notably, a version of the 'Impulse' from the game of the same name, which is a bonus for me because that was the only thing I liked about that game.

It's so similar to GtR in some ways, and so different in others, that it can be a bit hard to get your head around if you know GtR reasonably well.

And I think this is also a game to give more than one play to before you decide on how you feel about it.

I think it's a great update and is growing on me the more I think about it.

I am not a good GtR player, and it looks like I'm not a good Mottainai player either. Ian won pretty handily.

Next I taught Ian, Leah and Tim the latest game from Lookout, a company whose games I almost always enjoy.

This one is designed by the team behind Broom Service (Winner of the SDJ) and I suspect this one will be in the running this year too.

It's a fast playing, easy to teach and fun game that will work well with families, but has enough going on to make it a solid light game for gamers.

Players are each building their own village with tiles in a Carcassonne sort of way (matching landscapes), but the interesting twist is the tiles are drawn at the start of each round - three per player - then each player sets the price of those tiles (killing one of the three tiles each).

You reveal at the same time. You then, in player order, buy a tile from one of the other players (or pass) paying the amount they set the tiles at. The player who gets bought from gets the money they set the price with back, as well as the money the other player spent on the tile.

You will end up with between 0 and 3 tiles every round. And there is a scoring every round. Four different scoring categories are set at the start of the game - each one will score three times over the course of the game (six rounds, some rounds score more than one of the categories.

This played very smoothly and quickly, and there are lots of decisions to make between pricing tiles and holding back money to be able to afford other tiles, as well as the buying and placement of the tiles to maximise scoring.

It was my favourite game of the day, and the score was extremely close, though Ian came from last place to first in the final round.

Next the same group gave this new card game from EGG a go.

Play cards on the table in rows to activate powers and try to manipulate the end game to happen while you have a high scoring hand.

The rulebook, for such a simple game, is a disaster. Lots of seemingly obvious questions are not answered in the book at all.

We seem to have made the right decisions at the table for how to play, however we missed one important rule that WAS in the rulebook - The player who ends the game will count the final card they played as being in their hand in terms of scoring. That makes a lot more sense.

Anyway, the game did not go over well at all - Leah particularly hated end and ended the game as soon as she could (seemingly) accidentally giving herself the win.

I am certain there's a decent game there and it deserves more exploration, but I don't know if anyone else at the table would agree.

The same group finished with this new game from Ryan Laukat.

To my mind, this game is basically a more complicated Splendor, with dice. I didn't really love Splendor to begin with, but think it is a good game in the amount of time it takes.

You have a grid you buy different cards from, which give you more options, more dice etc. A few different ways to score, and some area control.

So, for me, this game didn't work. It might be better for me with fewer players, it also might be better as not-the-last-game-following-a-game-that-flopped.

It is also worth mentioning it has some very solid comments and ratings: https://www.boardgamegeek.com/collection/items/boardgame/168...

And I haven't enjoyed the Laukat game I have played (which is one of the 8 minute games, that people seem to really like) or liked the look of any playthroughs of his games that I have watched. So he might just be a designer who is on a different wavelength than me.

I have no memory of who won?

Richard was the driving force behind organising this game of 'Galaxy Trucker with almost everything', and after many attempts to get us Trucker devotees together we finally sat down for a game. The players were Richard, Tim, Oliver and myself, and we played with just about every expansion that we could. In the end we didn't use the extra ships pack, or the Take That cards, or the support teams. I had thought that by using so many expansions the game might become something of an unplayable mess but it was quite the opposite. As veteran players we had been finding the basic game to be dull and somewhat predictable and so the driving philosophy behind this game was to bring back the spark. And it worked! All of us suffered the kind of setbacks that we hadn't experienced since our very first plays of the game. Ships routinely retired either through loss of crew or engines. And on more than one occasion a battered and barely flyable hulk would crawl across the line after surviving the very last card. As it was the game was between myself and Richard at the end, with Richards ship leading before the draw of the last level I card. However I had a significant amount of cargo and although my ship was far behind on the track I was the only other survivor and would be guaranteed second and probably prettiest ship. I had a lot of ship left and would be able to survive almost anything, but there was one small issue. I had used the last of my batteries weathering a meteor storm and the only engine I had left was a double, requiring battery to use. Therefore my only vulnerability was the open space card, normally the most benign and safe card in the game. And so it was that Richard reached for the last remaining card and........

OPEN SPACE!!!!!!

Congratulations to Richard, the now current Ultimate Galaxy Trucker Champion.

My thanks to Richard for organising and to Tim and Oliver for their wholehearted participation. We all agreed that we must play again using the modules that we did not play.

I should also thank Raymond and Mark for playing my proto' of Tricky Pirates (free to print and play soon).

The play test on Thursday night (thanks Wez' and Selwyn) with 4 players when for about 5 hands. Too long for this type of game. Joss and I have had a few 2 player games and it was fine. I wanted to try it with 3 or 4 and a small rule tweak to see how that affected the length. It went to the beginning of the 3rd hand. Which I think is about right.

The parrot never even swore at the children..

After the AGM I joined a group of 4 others who were about to play this. I can't remember names (I don't think we all properly introduced ourselves) but there was a guy from Canada, 2 others who knew each other (and a third who later joined to watch), and a helpful WABA member who taught us how to play. He had a name tag but I can't remember what it said. shake

It was easy to pick up and a nice light game to start off with. I hadn't played before. The map got quite crowded but I managed to finish off all three of my tickets. I didn't win though, can't remember who did.

The same group (now 6) then played a copy of Citadels that the guy from Canada had with him, and he taught us all how to play.

It was pretty fun - a nice mix of building a tableau and some bluffing/player interaction through the various role cards. The scores ended up being quite close I think.

The same group wanted to play this next, and since we had one too many players the WABA member kindly offered to bow out.

I'd actually played this for the first time just a few days before, though I don't own it myself. It's a fairly easy game to grasp, and you're never overwhelmed by choices, but offers some interesting decisions and strategy. I quite like the theme, even if it is a bit pasted-on - the quests all have nice art and flavour text.

It was a close game, and I thought I had it for a while, but the guy from Canada beat me by two points.

Everyone I was playing with earlier had to leave, so after having something to eat I started watching a small game of ONUW that was going on. They kindly invited myself and a few others to join in.

Initially I continued my streak of being the Drunk (4th game in a row), but that thankfully ended. I also got to be a werewolf for the first time, which was fun. Some young kids were playing too, who will no doubt grow up to be excellent liars.

People kept coming over to watch and join in, and we eventually reached a critical mass of players (13, maybe?) that consumed three tables and required a moderator. It did get a bit difficult to keep track of what was going on, but definitely a fun experience.
