I am wondering what people think are the best political game out there. I am talking about games that have dealing and backstabbing the other players - not ones that are set in a political arena but involve mostly resource management.

Also, tell me why you think the game is great.

Thanks in advance to all the people that post.

One of my all time favorites. I love the Roman era and the possiblities for backstabbing, political dealings and all my favorite political things are available in this game. I really love to play except that the thing takes forever to get through and you rarely see anything but the first era before Rome is defeated or someone wins. We tend to play with counting victories instead of ending when someone achieves one - it makes the game actually more fun since you are willing to let people have things, like the Consulship, for now knowing that you move against them later.

Yeah it's a lot of resource management but it has good amounts of dealing and backstabbing if played with the right crowd. Changing stances to FORCE coalitions on a competitor who is trying to overtake you in votes for the lead, overly bidding on opinion cards to eat into the money reserves of the player who really wants it, "promising" future deals with others before backing out, suddenly changing your preferred coalition party for your own means.

I'd say that this has it even if it's seen as the Eurodaddy.

This seems to be an interesting political science fiction game. I haven't played it and unfortunately do not know how to get hand on a copy but I glanced through the rules and it looks REALLY cool! Ok, it also has some conquering mixed in and some alien demon race that threatens the galaxy, but in its core it is about gaining influence in the senat (controlling ministers) and/or gaining political influence by campaigning (or invading) space sectors. It looks like there is a lot of player interaction when trying to get new treaties pass the senat or when attempting to get senators of other player prosecuted.

If I could only find a way to get a copy (getting it shipped from Canada to Europe is just too expensive!).

This is a very cutthroat and very pure negotiation game. the rules are ludicrously simple, and there's no luck. Look at the following geeklist, where its discussed at length (it's the first entry):

I enjoyed Politics as Usual. I do recommend the advanced/optional rules that limits some cards to one party.

Really gives the feel of negative campaigning and interest group politics.

Most would probably deride Campaign Trail as a simple roll and move game - it is definitely both of those things. But while playing (especially if you play very quickly, taking only a few seconds per turn), the game feels quite thematic. In which states do you concede defeat? In which do you keep sending your candidates again and again to sew up the victory? Is it even worth it spending time in the states with few electoral votes? I always find Campaign Trail to be quite exciting.

A really fine and tight negotiation game. Could stand for a bit more political flavor, but it is a nice example of how well a stripped down negotiation game can work with a few incentives.

Our crew nabbed this one when Eurogames were still hard to come by in the US. It works with a large number players, and really does capture some of the work of coalition building. There is a TON of luck in the game. As your hand really matters. But, like any negotiation game, you can often work your way into a deal with some strategic whining.

The politics of land use planning is a popular theme with the Germans. That's probably a reflection of how bitter "zoning" political debates are in Europe. In any case, this older title plays very well, but the margins are TIGHT. If you end up making any money, consider yourself lucky.

Fascinating game idea that is really meant as a group exercise. Essentially, it is a land use negotiation game dealing with the rainforests in Brazil. Lots of interesting tensions, and while it has a definite political slant, not a one-sided perspective on the subject.

OK, the cover art sucks. But I really like this game. The theme of European integration is unusal. Its a negotiation game, up to a point. But it is really about building alliances to bring countries into the Union. You can get it for pennies on the dollar from European online stores. But like many negotiation games, it gets a bad wrap from analytical gamers who tend to be turned off by all such titles.

I've only played this game once, so I don't know how it plays with different crowds. But when I played it, this game quickly became a contest of alliances made and broken. It reminded me of the TV game show Survivor, because each turn is all about voting out one player. It's a fast-paced, brutal game for when you don't have seven hours for Diplomacy. And it has sharks!
