The fourth Thursday of the month saw another WABA Thornlie meet. There seemed to be lots of new people, and the place very quickly filled up with the sounds of happy people playing boardgames! What games did you play, what were some of the highlights/lowlights and what did you think about those games?

WABA's guild can be found here.
The metalist of WABA games played can be found here.

I started with this dice rolling, civilisation building game while manning the membership renewal desk. Mark seemed determined to rack up multiple disasters, while Shay was the first to build a monument. The game finished with all monuments being built, with Mark winning on 28 over Shay's 22 and my 18.

I played this twice, teaching both times to people who were either new or newish to WABA/modern boardgaming. In the first game, Susan learnt well enough to come 2nd to Shay on 37 and ahead of me on 25. In the second game, I taught Tracey and her son Ashton, who despite being very young seemed to quickly pick up the concepts. In that game, I won on 39 over Ashton's 31 and Tracey's 27.

I taught at least Jess and Penny's brother (sorry I didn't get your name!) Hamish and Godlief this game from the WABA Starter Tub which also included Penny. The initial powerups were a bit lackluster, but were eventually wiped to bring more interesting ones. The brother and I battled it out on points, with Godlief's monster damaging everyone and Penny's monster hoping to lurk in the background to pick up the win as we fell. With low health, I managed to survive long enough to fail to win on points one turn but manage to do so the next turn in a game where I did not buy a single powerup.

This is less of a game and more of an experience as you build up the story of your life. Mechanically, roll dice for symbols to buy cards which help to generate more symbols, roll more dice and gain points. But it is the story that develops, of me(/my person) as I gained all this knowledge learning first aid, gaining a PhD and becoming a blogger all before I got a job from the job centre, while being fit by having a healthy diet with my lone posession of a bicycle. Yet I showed the Andrew who retired from work early, Aidden who got married and had kids, and Richard who bought a used car as my next job was as a CEO!

Points wise, Andrew won on 57, to Richard's 52, my 41 and Aidden's 32. Yet it is the story and progression of a life that is created that is the real experience here.

David taught Martin, Victor and I Thebes, which is an archeology themed game set in the early 1900's. The turn order mechanism was fun, as was the balancing act between researching to improve your digging, and getting to the sites early in order to improve your chances of finding artifacts. The artifacts get 'dug' out of a bag that also contains blank tokens: these get returned to the bag at the end of the dig, decreasing the chance of archeologists finding artifacts at that site in the future. So there's some randomness involved but it is thematic and didn't bother me. Victor was the winner by a fairly clear margin at the end of the game. Took about 90 mins.

I didn't have time left to join the same group for Age of Industry, so I taught Tracey and Ashton Ticket to Ride. It was a very quick game and despite the fact that I'd smashed out the 'in game' points and gotten the longest route, Tracey can from behind with a massive amount of completed routes.

I was stoked when Ashton brought this game back to the table. We found a fourth player, Artis (sorry probably got your name wrong here), and I taught the group this bean farming classic. So much fun and I was the winner, having bought 3rd bean field early on and gotten some good trades.

It was a bit of a challenge learning from the book on the fly, but this turned out to be a fast moving game (once we worked it out).

Another one we tried to learn on the fly. Not sure if we got everything right, but we seemed to have all the cogs in place by the end.

We didn't find it as interesting as BSG, as it seemed all you really did is lie about the result of your dice rolls, but by the end we also started finding more ways of making it interesting, so another play definitely required to put some sheen on this one.

While waiting for others to arrive, myself and Leah played this great two player drafting game from Portal Games. This takes five minutes to learn and about 15 minutes to play, but packs a lot of good decisions into that time.
This was my only win of the day, it all went severely downhill afterwards...

Next up Leah, Tim, Amy and myself played this push-your-luck racing game. This models the flavour of rally sport really well. It includes the effects of tyre choices on different terrains, as well as giving the player the ability to drive cautiously, or go all out and drive recklessly, shaving valuable seconds off your time.

Our course included tarmac, snow and dirt. Leah and Amy sensibly went with snow tyres, while I went with hard tarmac, and Tim with soft. I got off to a terrible start, spinning out on my first turn, my first spin of many.

Leah and Amy ended up finishing with respectable times (comparatively at least), while Tim finished a little over a minute later. I still had a stage to go and was already about three minutes over everyone else, so I elected to retire from the race rather than make everyone else watch me spin to the finish line. I had also lost two of my gears by crashing into a mountain side.

I really enjoy this game, it's my favourite pure racing game. Was glad to get it played again, as it's not one that sees much play these days.

We were playing with the Dirt expansion, which really completes the game I think.

After Leah left temporarily Amy, Tim and myself were joined by Tegan for this great euro that I've only recently started playing. This was my second play, and everyone else was new. The main board is made up of five rondels, on which you can select actions, hire crew, buy equipment, hire employees etc. On your own board you're placing bow, middle and stern tiles to make up ships, before fitting them out with crew and equipment and sending them on a shakedown voyage.

Despite being the only player to every play before, I came dead last, having failed miserably to stick to my original plan. Amy won a convincing victory.

After dinner Leah rejoined Tim, Tegan and myself for this great euro. Unfortunately (for our scores' sakes), we were all a bit distracted and silly so everyone's game suffered pretty badly. All except Leah, who topped off her day of victories by being the only one to score respectably, despite being the only player never to have played before. Yeeeesh.

Walked in the door at 2pm sharp to find myself immediately shanghaied into this one, game mastered by Richard.

I played the role of the wizard. Specifically, I played the role of the front-line wizard, dashing bravely (amongst other adjectives) far ahead of the stragglers to find all the gold. Things went about as well as you'd expect, but I got out alive, anyway!

Jeff, Jasmine and Ethan joined forces to rid the earth of Count Dracula (Steve). What a great game! Poor Lord Godalming (Jeff) was stuck in Budapest for probably half the game, trying for the life of him to get the train out, but either through poor train schedules (rolls) or by Dracula's manipulations (cards) he made laughingly no progress out. Van Helsing and the others trotted around western Europe more partaking in cafe's and croissants than any real hunting while Lord Godalming butted heads with train inspectors and screaming blue murder.

A grand story could be further told of Dracula being chased east to Sarajevo, only to disappear in a flash and reappear in western Europe. Here he tried to escape to Ireland, only to have storms send him reeling back to Spain.

Finally Dracula was cornered in Spain, a few brief battles and he was surprisingly quickly dispatched with a knife in the back as he tried to flee the chase in human form by Mina Harker.

Great theme, great game!
