I'm merely keeping the contest going until Cerith returns.

Newish Feature:

One random thumber will receive a bonus of 5bag!

Contest Rules:

1) Add the game of the miniature(s) you painted as an item to the list. You may submit images of a single miniature or a group at your discretion.

2) The image you submit must have been uploaded during September 2015. Gallery images are okay but submitted images are preferred. As they've gone through the rigorous geek mod process it means at least someone has checked the submission conforms to BGG guidelines and it's also easier to check the submission date. The contest will end on 31 October 2015.

3) Please use the format [imageid=xxxxxmedium] where xxxxx is the id of the picture. Medium should be sufficient please do not use large.

4) You are the artist. Please do not submit miniatures painted by someone else.

5) One entry per person. You may, however, use either:

a. up to two 'normal' pictures of your entry, usually, the front and back of the miniature(s); OR
b. one image of a montage/collage of your entry.

6) The winner will be the picture with the most thumbs. You can thumb as many entries as you like.

7) If you can please note the make of the mini, scale and what paints you used in your entry.

In the interests of maintaining a level playing field for all entrants any entry that does not conform to the above rules will be removed. The contestant will be notified and is welcome to submit an entry that meets the above criteria.

Prizes:

I'm reliant on tips to offer prizes. Any tips received will awarded as follows:

1st place: 35%
2nd place: 25%
3rd place: 15%
Encouragement Awards 25%

Note I have altered this at my discretion - this may change when Cerith retakes the reigns.

Encouragement awards will be given to non-placing worthy entries with a bias to new participants. New painters are particularly welcome to enter and please do use the comment section for each miniature to discuss painting techniques, materials, share tutorial videos & etc.

Judging at the end of the month and winners will appear in the next months’ list.

1st place will now also receive an exclusive microbadge! Microbadge: Golden Turtleback Painted Miniature Monthly Contest winner

Please give this geeklist a thumb to help get it to the front page. The more contestants the better!

And don't forget to click on the images you like and give the actual images thumbs up as well!

Complaints Department

Last month's competition was notable for, as usual, the high standard of entries as well as a couple of people putting forth complaints about the competition. Here is my take on each of the complaints, please use this list entry to debate these points as well as raise any other issues with how the competition is run.

it seems the winner will be the person who gets the most thumbs up by getting in first (with a somewhat decent paint job).

Mr Fish says - Things aren't always what they seem. The winner is rarely in the first three or four images posted. That said, if you post an entry after the first week when the competition is no longer on the front page then, yes, traffic will be less and you're less likely to garner more thumbs.

I am not sure this is the right "guild" for Napoleonic figures.

Mr Fish says - Well, apart from this being a competition and not a guild (many of the regular entrants are also members of the Miniature Painters Guild, but it is not a pre-requisite for entry) Napoleonic and indeed all historical miniatures are most welcome entries. It is a rare month indeed when there aren't at least a couple of historical entries. The month this criticism was raised had two Napoleonic entries (though one was withdrawn, by the complainant, when they were asked to comply with the rules around permissible number of images); there was also another entry which rather delightfully showed medieval ships. In past competitions we have seen spaceships, C20th naval vessels and terrain pieces.

In short - diversity of subject matter is very welcome.

I'm not allowed to vote for myself? Is that in the rules? In the USA, presidential candidates are allowed to vote for themselves, and they do so with lots of fanfare.

Mr Fish says - There is nothing in the rules about who you can't vote for. Rules six explicitly states that :

Quote:
You can thumb as many entries as you like.
That said, I tend to thumb every entry other than my own more as a matter of taste than anything else.

It is probably worth pointing out that this is not the USA presidential election. As the majority of participants are not in the USA there is no reason why the way in which USA presidential candidates conduct themselves would even be a consideration.

I'm not sure it's a "competition" either, since past winners are allowed to keep coming back again and again.

Mr Fish says - Yes they are. Why wouldn't they? If past winners were banned then it would be a very small competition indeed. I have considered suggesting some form of 'handicap' system but that would, in my opinion, overcomplicate everything for little gain. This also means that professional painters compete with hobbyists. The basic approach is that if your entry is good enough (as judged by the BGG community) you'll win.

Even the organizer is allowed to enter?!? That would be like Kelly Clarkson being allowed to compete in every season of American Idol, and judge Paula Abdul being allowed up on stage to compete as well. This is a strange competition, indeed.

Mr Fish says - Yes, oddly enough I am allowed to enter the competition I have been administering for the past couple of years. Your American Idol references mean little to me (not in the USA and I don't tend to watch much TV) but I gather you're comparing me entering this competition (which I have never won) to a judge in a talent show competing. As noted above I am not the 'judge' of this competition, rather I am the administrator.

I suggest that having an administrator eligible to enter the competition is not an anomaly in BGG, last month the chap who runs the 'Photo of the Month' competitions not only won, he also entered their 'Hall of Fame'. I further suggest this victory and status elevation is due not to so sort of cheating but rather due to the merit (as judged by the BGG community) of his submissions.

A final word from your administrator:

I have been running this competition for the last little while as I see it as a valuable part of BGG life. It showcases some great painting, inspires others to emulate that painting and is a great place to share knowledge and get some tips all of which is, in my opinion, very much a positive thing.

Please do use the comments for this item to discuss any aspect of the competition including the way that it is run and how it could be improved.

Now, on with the show.

Sentinel Hybrids from the first D2e expansion. I use Citadel paints, with the exception of a light layer of Golden Interference Paints on the swords (blue and purple). I did my best to capture the tints in the picture, but these really shine (pun intended) in person - interference paints reflect against a dark surface. When painted over s metallic silver paint, it depends on the angle of the light and viewer. From a certain angle, the swords appear to be your standard silver. From a different angle, you catch a sparkling purple or blue hue. Fantastic stuff.

I also decided to work on my blending on the master cloak and thought it worked out well (the purple to match the sword).

Last note - I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Citadel technical paint for rust. It works soon well for not just rust, but flames (next month) too.

I didn't plan to paint any of the figures, but most of the pre-paints were quite bad, so even a quick paint job looks better.
