Numbers seemed lower than a normal Mt Claremont meet - perhaps a combination of the last weekend of the school holidays, warmer weather luring people outdoors and the start of summer sports? Nevertheless, everyone who came seemed to enjoy themselves with another great day of boardgaming.

WABA held the 2015 WABA Catan Tournament at this meet. Fifteen people took part, randomly allocated to a table (three tables of 4 players and one table of 3 players) for the preliminary round.

On Table 1, Luke Phillips won on 10 points over Nick Measday and Jon Stoate (both on about 6) and Matter Salardi on 2 [I didn’t ask players to record/remember positions after 1st, so these are as the players best remembered]. On Table 2, Jack Zhu won on 10 over Blake Mathieson on about 8, Simon Thomas on about 6 and Rudolf Furchtenichy somewhere between 4 to 6. On Table 3, Victor Thomas won on 10 over me (Ernest Chua) on 9, Godlief Wesley on 6 and Sharon King on 5. On Table 4, Claire Delides won on 10 over Elaine Walker second (points unremembered) and Gary Crier third (points unremembered).

As winners of their table, Luke, Jack, Victor and Claire competed in the grand final.

The grand final contested by Victor, Jack, Luke and Claire (from left to right).

The grand final game was played immediately after the preliminary round between Luke, Jack, Victor and Claire. This was a hard fought game, with the typical resource gathering, road building and the atypical all development cards being bought. The players commenting that it was one of the longer games of Catan they had played, befitting the skill of the players to get to the grand final. In the end, it was Claire who emerge victorious on 10 points, over Jack on 9 points, Victor on 7 points and Luke on 6 points.

Congratulations to Claire on her victory. As part of her win, she won a $20 gift voucher to Tactics and the title of champion of the 2015 WABA Catan Tournament!

Thank you to everyone who took part and for playing in the spirit of the tournament. Further details about the 2015 WABA Catan Tournament can be found at the 2015 WABA Catan Tournament thread. The result of this tournament has been added to WABA and WABA Related Boardgame Competitions/Tournaments .

Tim got a refresher from Warren (and I) as we sat down to play this often overlooked game. Mark mocked Warren's display but it was he who came away with the win on 59 points over Tim's 48 and my 45 points.

Warren, Mr X (sorry I didn't get your name!) Daniel and I started playing in Mr X's first time playing. Elaine then joined partway through on 0 points and 10 health after we had already gained points and power ups but also after having lost some health. Daniel took over Warren after he died, then I died and Elained eventually emerged as the winner (via being the last one alive, I think).

It was nice to be able to get into a game where everyone knew the rules, as it was when Elaine, Simon, Jess and I stepped into this game. My unfamiliarity with the map and routes can be explained not by not having played this version as initially posited, but by playing this version/map less compared to Ticket to Ride: Europe (as records reflect).

I was roundly mocked for taking lots of tickets in the beginning of the game, and it didn't completely fall flat as I managed second placed. Jess won on 161 over me 138, Elaine's 121 and Simon's 97.

Sharon was taught the game for the first time, with Nick and Elaine on either side helping her when cards weren't passed to them. Sharon ended up with the win on 52, over me on 51, Mr M (sorry I dont' remember your name!) on 50, Nick 48, Godlief 43, Elaine 41 and Jon 39. Less help for Sharon next game, I think

[Player order was Jon, Godlief, me, Nick, Sharon, Elaine, Mr M]

I played 4 games of this, involving me, Adrian, Eric, Simon and Mr M.

In game 1, my lone werewolf was found out for a villagers win. In game 2, lone werewolf Adrian fooled us all for the win. In game 3, Eric and I were unsuccessful as the two werewolves. But game 4, were Eric and I died, was my favourite. I had started out as the robber, but stole and saw that I was now the doppelganger, an unknown role doppelganger. Amongst all the claiming and swapping of roles, Eric ended up being the tanner. So he died but he won. Then, it was revealed that the original doppelganger saw the tanner, so I was now a tanner too, who died but also won. So both tanner died but won!

Played a couple of games with Amy and Adrian before being joined by Warren and Rudolf for a 5-player game. A really nice, little game that involves some drafting, tile laying and working with the players either side of you to construct a 4x4 tile city. Only your lowest scoring city counts, so there is nothing to be gained by "tanking" one of your cities.

My first time playing this one! And the last game of the night. Amy 1, Amy 2, Adrian and I were joined by Warren, Mark, Jess and Elaine. After trying my hardest to compete in both the trash talk stakes and the game, we were all soundly beaten by Warren, with Mark managing to rack up a score only a mother could be proud of.

I joined a group that were about to play Dominion for the first time. I have played before, but not for over a year. I believe all of them were over here on a working holiday, two from France and one from Italy. I only remember one of their names (Tio, not sure how it's spelled).

Warren kindly guided us through the first few rounds to make sure we all knew what we were doing, and everyone picked it up fairly quickly and we powered through four games, using a random setup each time after the first. One of the group had to leave after the second game, but was replaced by Jack who I had played against in the Settlers tournament.

There was a fairly even spread of victories - I won once, and I don't think anyone else won more than once. Everyone seemed to enjoy it. I certainly did - we played quite fast and I think that is the key to Dominion, see what crazy combos you can assemble from these particular Kingdom cards and then move on to the next random setup. I remember at one point Jack played 5 Laboratories in a row, drawing 10 extra cards for his hand. We also had a game with the thief but no defence (moat), so everyone was stealing from each other with impunity and you had to hold on to enough coppers to protect your more valuable treasures from being stolen (and/or use the bureaucrat to give yourself a steady supply of silver). I'm keen to play this again with some of the expansions.

After playing Dominion, Jack had to leave and the guy whose name I don't remember taught Tio and myself how to play Pandemic. I enjoyed it. We used the easiest difficulty but still could not contain the red disease which spread out of control through Asia due to a series of unlucky card draws. We managed to cure three of the diseases though.

Mark, Pete, Chris and myself excitedly cracked out 6 core sets worth of the reboot of my favourite LCG from Fantasy Flight. It's very similar to the original with a few tweaks to fix some of the overly complicated timing issues that the first edition had developed over 7 or 8 years. We all won a game each and finished eager to build more decks and play again.

It's a great time to get on if you've ever had any interest in the best* LCG around. And just like first edition you'll find any of us who already play are very keen to teach it.

*Fact, not opinion.
