I stayed away from the Villains version of Legendary for a long time, mostly because it kind of annoyed me that it changed all of the terminology between the two sets, making it a bit clunky to put them together.

But my awful completionist tendencies took hold and I picked it up.

Tim, Leah, Mal, Pete and I played a game - Turns out it was Leah's first deckbuilder?

I think five might have been too many players, or possibly we chose too many unassociated villains, so the combos weren't really coming together... Or both. Anyway, it went a little long, and we had our butts handed to us by Dr Strange, who is the 'beginner' adversary.

But I did enjoy the game. I like the way it is less co-op than regular Legendary.

Anyway, good won, and we all lost.

Next I taught the same group this very clever new tile laying and bidding game.

Players draw tiles from a bag and set the price on them. Then each player may buy one tile from any of the other players. You them place them in you village.

It plays fast and smoothly. Easy to teach.

This is a tremendous game. I would be shocked if it's not at least nominated for the SDJ.

Mal won. I am still terrible at the game.

The same group was joined by Shay, Kimberly, and then halfway through by Mark, for this brilliant party game.

I'm not really a party game guy, though I do enjoy bluffing/social deduction games a lot of the time. I describe this as a mash-up of Spyfall and Pictionary, though I prefer it to both.

Mal and I tied for first, though scores aren't really the point of this game. I did manage to bluff my way through being the fake artist twice - Always satisfying.

Mal had to leave, so Pete, Leah, Tim and I broke out my new copy of Bremerhaven, a game from a couple of years ago that really flew under the radar. Several people asked about the game, but no one had heard of it.

Each player is running a harbour, building it up, taking contracts and docking ships. The way you claim spaces is through blind bidding with cards.

I liked it a lot, in fact it was my favourite of the night - But it was also the only completely new game to me, so that often helps.

The rules are easy to learn and teach, the theme comes through and makes sense. I think thing that might have hurt the game was that the art makes it look like a Le Harve spin off. So people who didn't like Le Harve probably stayed away, and people who did like it probably didn't get the kind of game they expected.

Anyway, thumbs up from everyone at the table, I think.

And I won, so that also helps.

Speaking of games that flew under the radar, after dinner the same group played this great little card game from the designer of Carcassonne (I mistakenly said Catan on the night).

I really enjoy this game, I love the clever way you have to choose the card to take from the stacks, but also be careful what you are revealing, as it scores for the other players. And the way you want to add your most abundant foods to the sacrifice pile, while keeping enough of them that you can earn points of them.

I do think it works better with fewer players in terms of having more control over the game, and yet it is still a good and fun game with four.

I won, but it was very close with Tim taking second place.

Finally we taught Leah this fantastic worker placement game of building railroads in Russia.

This is a recent classic. I've played a lot of it, and I don't tire of it either.

Another close game that I managed to win right at the end. Tim was once again in second place.

I actually won doing the thing that I warned everyone not to let me do when the game began. Getting most of the engineers, and most of the industry tiles that let me score the engineers.

Nick, Andrew and I played this horrendous, misshapen travesty of a game.

Zombies popped up, were knocked down; survivors were insta-killed all over the place by the evil exposure die; we had to make piles of "stuff" to do "stuff". Something something, we all died, and were happier for it. I breathed a sigh of relief as it became time to play something else.

(I don't like it much.)

Four of us gave this recently received Kickstarter game a test run.

In short, you are betting on the resulting sum of a pool of dice. Players can add or subtract various dice to the pool, hoping to affect the result to their benefit. There is a worker placement element to mitigate and affect the results.

The theme is of a floating Thai Market, with player winnings represented by gaining a variety of fruit. I like that part.

There are some questionable board design choices. (Why are some positions so infuriatingly unclear?)

It seems aimed at those who enjoy calculating probabilities and spread of likely values (who doesn't?)--but then has a number of nebulous choices around this that detract from any gain in making accurate predictions.

It's not very good, and I probably won't break it out again for a long time.

However, I have played a few recent games at WABA and some game nights, and the more I play the more I enjoy it.

Now in my "play more often" list. (Why oh why do I always lose by one round!!!)

Andrew, Gracie and I got stuck into Viceroy.

I managed to excel in not gaining any VPs, while Gracie trumped us all by a long margin. Grrrrrr.

(The mystery of Viceroy remains: why are the bags that come with the game ever-so-slightly too small to hold the game components??? Methinks some game designer somewhere is rubbing his hands and laughing maniacally.)

Andrew and I played this two-player pick-up-and-deliver game.

Simple, but elegant. This game is a winner, and nicely fills the slot for two-player only, 30-40 minute light game, that can require some really very clever decisions.

If I wasn't impressed by Cogz, I would politely say it's a nice game with some neat graphic design and a rather sturdy gizmo thing in the box that could perhaps be used for self defence, or to lever up a vehicle.

But I did enjoy Cogz. I was rather wowed by the choices to be made, and I appreciated the simplicity/effectiveness of its rule-set. Will play again.

On the negative side, my cat will not possibly be able to sleep inside the box. But he will try.

As for our actual game, Andrew won by a point, pulling ahead with some black magic trickery in the last turn. Dastardly.

Warren had a print and play version of this game. It had only a fraction of the word cards of the published version but it allowed Michael, Wes and I a good chance to see how it played. It is a very clever word game and I can certainly see why it is so popular. The amount of downtime I found a little too much but the quality of the game made up for that. I look forward to playing the full version.

I had a game of this with Tuck, his Greyjoy Fealty deck against my Stark Banner of the Watch deck. I got stomped, the combination of Balon Greyjoy and Iron Fleet Scout let him easily steal what power I was able to gain and then take some more.

Despite the sound thrashing I received I still enjoyed the game and it gave me some things to keep in mind when I build my next deck.
