Big turnout as usual for Thornlie these days. Saw a lot of great games on the table and was very excited to see Fire in the Lake getting played by others.

Fantastic game leaning toward the heavy end with a theme that's not at all backed up by it's gameplay, but that doesn't matter because it's still a lot of fun.

I think it's about mining in Africa. The main goal is to get shares in companies and spread those company's influence over the map to increase the share price. There's also diamonds and reading books. And it's all done with a neat hand management mechanic where you play 3 cards a turn, then discard those 3 cards to seperate piles and only take one pile back to your hand. So you can play all your awesome hat cards on one turn and have an awesome hat turn but it's gonna take a few turns to get all those awesome hat cards back into your hand. Meanwhile everyone else played it cool with hats and you're left out in the cold with no hats. I should mention that hats are used to spread influence over the board so they're pretty important.

I played with Ian, Tegan and Pete. Pete pipped me by 2 points and the other's weren't far behind.

It's like Kanban for babies. Place a meeple, pay some money, build a car, sell car, profit.

The twist is in the production line each car is built on and what the markets are demanding each turn. On top of building a car each turn you can add upgrades to your production lines that give your car bonuses like super speed or being environmentally friendly. If a market is demanding these types of bonuses and you provide them then the car you make will be worth even more when you sell it. The markets change their demand slightly each turn over 4 turns but you can see what's coming up and plan for it.

There's a little more to it but it's pretty easy to learn and have a decent play in under an hour. Having said that I played terribly and while everyone else made it onto their second lap around the score track I was left languishing well behind the pack. Tegan took the chequered flag for this.

First time down to the event. When i expressed interest in coming Down, Ty sent me a message asking me if i would like to give Fire in the Lake a go and i happily obliged. It was a great game and the NVA sadly were cut short of their large March into the south with an early coup.

Would love to hear of other 'warmers' in Perth.

Fun, because I can potentially win by throwing every fight. It can be quite hilarious when everyone else is also trying to slaughter their own guys. Also, I hate those cards that cancel all other cards...whoever thought of those should be sent to valhalla, and receive no glory in the process.

To me, this feels like playing a 20 year old RTS game, but without the benefit of having a computer do all the bookkeeping and calculations. So, not particularly groundbreaking, in my opinion; although I did prove that having ten waitresses and no actual food to serve was not a particularly viable strategy for a restaurant. Funnily enough.

Mark and I taught Jess how to play this, a little too well it seems.

Jess as the Halflings dug often and built steadily, accumulating a significant lead. My Chaos Magicians nearly pipped her at the post in end game scoring, through cult track and network domination, but ended up missing out by about three points.

This is one of my favorite games, due to it's heavy dependence on strategy over luck and I am always looking forward to playing again.

I played this with Steve. (I think)

Oh wow, is this confusing on a first time run through. If you haven't played it, it's kind of like Cluedo, but the murder hasn't happened yet and almost everybody is a bad guy of some description conspiring together and if you (the players) don't succeed in preventing tragedy you travel back in time and try it again.

We figured it out, mostly thanks to a quick summary from Ian. We made it all the way through the basic scenario and I, as the player, managed to stop the Mastermind from orchestrating his final murder although that was mostly due to some first time play mistakes that revealed a little too much information. To be fair, I don't see how you could get through the first game without some confusion somewhere, especially as the Mastermind.

I taught this to Tegan, Warren and Pete.

In this cooperative game players take the role of a group of friends in the trenches of World War One, trying to survive the hardships of war.

You must work together to whittle away the Trials deck any reveal the peace dove by going on missions. Each mission sees every player receiving a certain amount of cards from the Trials deck that they will ideally be able to play to a common tableau (No Man's Land) or beside their character (hard knocks).

Cards played to No Man's Land represent hazards such as harsh weather, artillery bombardment or gas. If at any time there are three or more of a single hazard visible in No Man's Land the mission fails and bad bad things happen. Cards played to your character represent mental conditions brought on by the hardships endured, and can change things a lot for that player. If at any stage a character has four hard knocks they are killed and the game ends in defeat.

Every turn cards are taken from a moral deck and added to the trails deck (at least three), taking players further away from revealing the peace dove and closer to revealing the monument at the bottom of the moral deck, which signifies the game end (also in defeat).

This is a HARD game, but we were blessed with amazing luck which carried us through to surviving the war. At one stage we drew the ONLY CARD in the game that wouldn't have killed us, and at another stage I just happened to find the ONLY positive card (representing the Christmas Cease Fire) to remove Pete's forth hard knock before he died.

I really love this game. It's sound mechanically, but the theme, which is refreshingly anti-war in its sentiment, is implemented beautifully. There is no direct representation of the enemy, no one to shoot or kill. You're just a group of friends trying to survive. Very highly recommended.

Next up we played this (loose) adaptation of the popular video game.

In this you control a bunch of test subjects who are moving through chambers on an ever-changing board, before activating one of the three left-most chambers (granting the player with the most test subjects present some rewards), flipping it over and moving it to the right-most side. All the time you're trying to put pieces of cake on the board, which can be moved by anyone's test subjects, and also incinerated. Once one player has no test subjects on the board the player with the most cake on the board is the winner. There's also a turret which kills things as well as cards that have effects but then change a rule after they're played.

This game is very chaotic, but was pretty fun. There's quite a lot of take that, and it's hard to see some of the card abilities coming (at least on a first play), but it didn't outstay its welcome. There are some really bad production choices, particularly in the way the tiles slot together and have to be wrestled apart every turn to be moved. It's not really my style of game but I enjoyed our play.

Leah ended up winning, even after I incinerated her cake...

Next up we played this trick taking / set collection game by Matthias Cramer.

In this game you're trying to collect cards that dictate what kind of sets you need to score points. A card might provide eight points for a set of three different fruit cards, for example. Each turn everyone plays one card in player order (similar to a trick taking game), but once everyone has played, the player who played the highest value card gets their choice of the cards played, placing it in their tableau (possibly making a set there and then). They the player who played the next highest card chooses, and so on. Some cards grant actions when you claim them, such as the ability to steal a card from another player's tableau, or the ability to claim the dog card, which protects your cards from being stolen.

Despite much confusion about the name of the game, and much inappropriate talk of plums, I think everybody enjoyed this. I believe Pete won?

Next up the same group of four played this great area control game (that is a re-themed version of König von Siam).

In this game players are trying to have the most followers of the faction that controls the most regions of the board at the game's end.

There are three factions (Scots, Welsh and Romano British).

There are eight conflicts that occur in an order generated randomly at the beginning of the game. Each conflict represents an area on the map, and when it resolves the faction with the greatest presence there takes control of it. This area is then locked for the rest of the game.

On a player's turn they can either play a card or pass. If all players pass consecutively the conflict resolves and the game moves on the next conflict (in a different region). If a player plays a card instead of passing, play continues, making it possible to play a card even after you passed your previous turn, providing that at least one other player doesn't pass before your turn comes back around.

When you play a card, you preform its action (usually placing or moving a factions cubes, sometimes reordering the conflicts), and you also claim a cube from the board and place it in your court. These are your followers.

Playing a card is the only way to manipulate the board, and also the only way to claim a follower, but you only have eight for the entire game, so careful card play is really important and tense.

Another great point of tension is that you're trying to increase the strength of a faction on the board, but you also need to claim followers of that faction to win, which in turn weakens that faction's position on the board.

Another added wrinkle is that when you play with four players, it becomes a team game. Players still win only on the merits of their own followers, but the victory is shared. The trick is that you're not allowed to communicate with your team mate in any way.

This is a really great game full of tense decisions and second guessing. the team mate element is really interesting because some of your plays really depend on your team mate realising what you're trying to do. Also, whether you're first or second in your team's playing order can make a huge difference to how you play.

Luckily, myself and Tegan were able to compliment each other well enough to win. A rare sight indeed.

This was probably my highlight of the day, look forward to playing again soon.

I played this with Tegan while Ian was helping with Tragedy Looper.

This version has a couple of changes to the rules.
You get an extra token if you win the round by holding a rank four card (called companions in this version) when the deck runs out.

The rank five cards are the heroes Finn and Jake, if you use one to discard the other you automatically win the round because you got the best buddies together.

I enjoyed the original Love Letter when I played it before with four, but the only impression I got from a two player game is that it's better with four.
