I was reading a post asking for advice about a certain game, the person admitting his wife doesn't like aggressive or "take that" gameplay. One responder suggested why the game might not be suitable based on that criteria, and then went on to suggest that "women tend to not like confrontational games."

Ummm, excuse me. But that's YOUR wife/girlfriend/or every woman YOU know.

Not me, though. I know plenty of women gamers who enjoy confrontational games, or even those with themes mostly (around here, anyway) associated with males.

Thus, here's a little list of the kinds of games I'm talking about, and please, feel free to add your own!

I just played this game on Friday night with two women players and one male. The two women actually worked better as a team than the guy. As a matter of fact, they strategized and worked the game to their advantage, while the guy seemed only interested in being the first into new areas. Furthermore, the ladies enjoyed the bloodletting and the looting!

My wife really enjoyed this game, before we traded it away. She loved how the tiles would give you new abilities, and she liked the way she could colonize and then force her Empire into the four corners of the globe. She came in second in this picture.

My wife enjoys all of the Richard Borg games in the "Commands and Colors" series; we started with Battle Cry and have worked through each system as it appears on the shelves at the FLGS. Generally, she's bold and aggressive, playing the cards in a devastating manner to her sorry opponent (ie-me).

I know of plenty of women who enjoy these series of games, and for as many different reasons as one can imagine. I know one lady who sets up BattleLore and waits--WAITS!--for her man to get home to play!

My wife loves block wargames! In this picture she's thinking about which tactics to employ and the strategies she will use to execute them. Wizard Kings is her favorite block wargame, but she also enjoys:

Hammer of the Scots
Napoleon
Crusader Rex

And she is still working her way through the rules for Rommel in the Desert!

My wife also loves miniatures games. In this picture, her force of heroines is about to take out agent Nick Fury--the sole survivor of my force.

My wife makes a point of gnerally collecting and utilizing the female characters only in the miniatures games she plays. Of course, for some reason, the women characters are sometimes weaker and underpowered when compared to their male counterparts. Funny, though, sometimes the exact opposite is true and she'll get a figure that can destroy any figure I may choose to play.

I know quite a few women interested in miniatures games, too. Again, each of their reasons is as varied as the next, but this is NOT an exclusive "boys only" genre.

For the record, she likes Hero Clix, Dungeons & Dragons Miniatures, and, to some degree (and more for me than anything else), Star Wars miniatures. Lately, she's been wanting to diversify, so we have some micro-armor on the way and she's been keeping an eye on Games Workshop Lord of the Rings starter set, The Mines of Moria.

My wife took this picture from our last game of Panzer Leader. She really, really likes wargames! Her all-time favorite:

Squad Leader

She has played all kinds of wargames, though, everything from 1776 to Ogre. We recently decided to invest in the Advanced Squad Leader Starter Kit series, as this will now be our chief wargame of choice. After we've played out the scenarios in the starter series we'll most likely move on to the much bigger game.

Here we are playing Hive. She really likes a wide range of the two-player games, everything from Hera and Zeus to Roma. In fact, it sometimes seems she enjoys the games where you can really trounce the other player (ie-the "take that" factor).

What she despises are the games which are supposedly "for women" bandied about around here, like--GASP!--Lost Cities. She can't stand that game! Thank God!

Man! Eurogames! Almost more "take that" than even the most hardiest of men can handle. My wife and her contemporaries enjoy decimating their opponents in this game and others in this huge category.

Everytime I have played this (or Settlers of Canaan, and soon Settlers of the Stone Age), or Ticket to Ride, or Pirate's Cove, or Carcassonne, or Gheos, or Trias, or, or, or...

Well, you get the idea. Eurogames offer plenty of "take that" and generally, in the circles I play, women seem to dominate! They seemingly have no problem trouncing the opposition. They don't hold back, and they certainly take no prisoners on their way to a victory.

I am the gamer between us. (I am a girl.) Right now, I've got my boyfriend hooked on Thurn and Taxis. This isn't a very confrontational game at all, because you can't really stop a person from building their routes in the game (unless you want your own gameplay to suffer or it's a coincidence.) But I am ramping him up to more competitive stuff. My favorite computer games are all war games, so it's only a matter of time before we are playing war games. I just got myself a copy of Empires of the Middle Ages. I do tend to like games that have financial/production/development aspects as well as combat, but that's just because it helps me get more into the theme/gameplay because I really feel like I have control.

Other than wargames, I'm finding I really love geography games for some reason. No idea what that is about, since I generally suck at the subject, but I guess I feel like I'm using more of my brain for that reason. Bring on the maps!

He says that he'll play chess with me, but I find that dry as hell. I'm going to try him with Abalone soon.

My girlfriend is still not quite into the heavy-duty chit games. However, I got her to try Twilight Struggle. It turns out to be just the right weight of game for her (plays in 3 hours or less and not a lot of down time between player phases).

She loves the cold war theme and is quite a vicious player. She usually wins at this one (most often by engineering situations where I am the one forced into starting WWIII).

Ok, not an absolute favorite of my spouse because she's not a big fan of sci-fi or fantasy themes (if this game used maps or a medieval theme she'd love it). She loves that this entire game is based on fast-paced successive battles where we both try to out-strategize the other. Pretty high on the confrontational spectrum of games.

That was until I introduced her to Ticket to Ride - which is the *only* game she insists on playing now... gulp

After reading reviews that talked about the tactical quasi-chess-like nature of the game, my girlfriend decided to get Neuroshima Hex even though she's not normally interested in science fiction war-themed games. Now we've been playing it almost every day for over a month, and decided to play it "officially" every day in March for our monthly tournament (loser treats the winner to dinner in restaurant of winner's choice). Since it only takes about 20 minutes, we also sometimes play it to decide who has to wash the dishes.

We also have played insane amounts of Rumis and Hive and Carcassonne and Gipf games in recent months.

Last night, my wife, daughter, and I played this. I went along my merry way, touching the flags and avoiding any damage. They stayed by the first flag, shooting each other, pushing each other into walls, gaining new weapons to better blast each other, etc. In this case, they forgot the object of the game, and they didn't care.
