WABA's first meet in Thornlie for this year had boardgamers travel to south of the river to learn new games and revisit older ones. Add what you played and see what games got to the tables.

This was what we came to pick up. Two people patiently bore with us as we picked through a game. We're all keen to have another game of it!

To start with, Ian taught us (Tim, myself, and Shay who had played before) the resource management game. It's not really a pick up and delivery game, though it looks like one from the outside.

You have contracts to fulfill and routes to travel. Lots of different bonuses. Dice to are used for the action selection.

Anyway, I liked it a lot. Game of the day for me. Looking forward to playing again and trying some of the different character powers.

Also, I won!

Next Leah picked Rokoko (after being egged on by Tim), so I taught them and Adam this fun hybrid of deckbuilding and area control.

As always, I spent too long doing things other than making dresses, and scored terribly.

I think Tim won?

The same group played this clever little market game.

You buy gems from the display, some fake and some real. Try to sell them at the right time, and to not get caught with the fake gems. Each round begins with a simultaneous action selection, so you have to plan what you are doing while carefully considering what others will do.

I thought it was very clever, but played too long. Almost certainly would be better with two or three. Having said that, we were all ready to eat dinner about half an hour into the game, so it also might have been a timing issue.

Adam won.

Lastly, after dinner, Mal, Pete and I played what we knew would be a difficult, muddled first game of Pax Pamir. Your first play of a Sierra Madre game is rarely very smooth.

We got to the second potential game end condition after about two and a half hours, and, die to me not quite understanding how the end game works, I gave the game to Pete. BUT, that's probably much better than the game going until the last possible end game trigger, potentially adding a couple more hours to the game.

Pax Porfiriana is currently my favourite game. This removes all of the super swingy card powers, and uses the system in a really clever way. I look forward to playing it again.

We then had time to squeeze in a game of Captain Park, which is a short, fun game that appears to have been inspired by the Blackadder episode "Potato". Basically, players (try to) hide out in London for 6 months or more while surreptitiously gathering items that will convince the Academy of Science that they have been on an epic journey to the amazon, Mount Everest, etc.

Tim, Adam, Amy and myself played this great tile placement / race / set collection game.

We ended up with a three player bottleneck a few spaces away from the Northwest Passage, but I managed to make it there first after a few false starts.

Adam's crew had a few very near misses, and were almost entirely stranded in the frozen wastes on at least two occasions.

In the end, Tim was victorious, having secured a few bonuses from collecting sets of exploration tokens, and also making it back to Greenland first.

I played this with various people about seven of eight times throughout the day.

This is a deduction game in the style of Mysterium (the Forensic Investigator must give sometimes obtuse clues while keeping silent), with a hidden traitor or two. Each player has four "Means" cards in front of them (murder methods basically – drill, acid, pipe, there's a whole load) as well as four Clue cards (these can be anything – a painting, USB drive, graffiti...). One player is secretly the murderer and choses one Means card and one Clue card, showing them to the Forensic Investigator while all other players have their eyes closed.

The Forensic Investigator then lays out some tiles in front of them. A Cause of Death tile is always in play, one of a choice of four Location tiles and four random tiles. Each tile has about eight options on it. e.g. the Cause of Death tile might have: Loss of Blood, Suffocation, Severe Injury etc. The Forensic Investigator places a bullet token on each of the six tiles visible, identifying a clue in an attempt to point the investigators towards the correct Means and Clue card. The problem is that the four random tiles may not be helpful at all, or worse, may be misleading. There are two opportunities to draw a new tile and replace an old one.

Each player has one official accusation, but they must identify both the correct Means and Clue card, not just the Murderer player.

When you add more players there's also an accomplice (who helps draw heat away from the Murderer) and a Witness (who knows who the Murderer and Accomplice are, but not which is which). If the Murderer is caught and can identify the Witness, they still win.

This is a really good quick alternative to Mysterium, and worked pretty well at five, but was definitely better once the Accomplice and Witness were added.

Introduced this classic co-op for a really tight on the edge of victory/defeat game but just got pipped with the final outbreak occurring before the final cure could be found. This prompted a 2nd game but it ended pretty much the same nail biting way.
