OK. Here we go. Please remember to thumb the list to maximize visibility.
Please post games to this list that benefit from having the money that is supplied with the game replaced with poker chips. For each game that you add, please provide the following information:

1. What is the primary benefit (i.e. game plays faster [if faster, please try to quantify how much time is saved], the game looks better [let's face it some of the money supplied is just plain ugly], the game is easier to understand, etc., etc.). If possible indicate how much of a benefit the chips provide (I don't know any way to objectively quantify this so let's use a more subjective small, medium, large benefit).

2A. What is the total size of the bank (this will impact how many chips to get to replace the bank). Note that some games use a multiple of 10 for the lowest denomination which may make the determination of how many chips to get more complicated (because a 1 chip can be used to represent 1 or 1 million or 1 billion (or even 1,000)).For games that specify an unlimited bank, please feel free to list what the publisher actually includes as the bank with the game.

2B. Based on the typical payouts during the game, what is the optimal composition of the bank (i.e. how many $1 chips, how many $2 chips, how many $1000 chips, etc.--please do NOT comment on what colors the chips of various denominations should be {feel free to post that discussion at Poker Chips Replacing Paper Money Benefits Some Games More than Others }. (this will impact how many of each color of chip to get to replace the bank).

3A. For each game that you post (or for each game upon which you are commenting), please indicate whether money is public or private according to the OFFICIAL RULES. I understand that theoretically all public transactions could be tracked; however, in reality there are few savant players that can actually do that (at least accurately). And there can be a HUGE difference between knowing your opponents exact financial situation and having a good general idea about it (for example in Outpost if you KNOW that you have $1 more than your opponent then you open the bidding on the Moon Base, but if you are not sure, then you may decide to open the bidding on the Planetary Cruiser instead).
Note that I am not saying it is a bad thing to decide to play with money as public regardless of the rules. Nor am I saying that you or your group should not do that.
But on this list let's not debate whether a certain game should be played with public or private money or how easy or hard it is to do that. If you would like to comment on this aspect, please post your comments at Poker Chips Replacing Paper Money Benefits Some Games More than Others.
If you believe that it is almost universally accepted that the game is played with money as public even though the rules state it should be private, feel free to make such a comment, but please state upfront that the rules indicate that money should be private. And if it is just you or your group that tends to play that way, then please do not comment (at least here) on public vs. private.
I just want the list to clearly reflect what the official rules state so that folks can make up their own minds about where best to substitute chips.

Original posters--I would appreciate it if you would go back and edit your original entries to reflect 3A as the moderator cannot edit your entries.

3B. If the game dictates that money should be private (and your group plays that way), feel free to share your preferred method to achieve privacy with poker chips (which are obviously inherently non-private).

If somebody beats you to the punch and posts a game before you, please feel free to add a comment to that game and supply the details above (esp. if your details differ from the original poster of the game). Or feel free to post a comment if you disagree with the original poster of the game that the particular game being discussed does actually benefit from having the money replaced.

Please do not comment on whether the chips should have a denomination printed on them or whether players should just take each paper denomination and put the representative chip on it so everyone can tell what color chip equals what denomination any time during the game. But again, feel free to post your comment on this topic at http://www.boardgamegeek.com/thread/157148.

This list is primarily intended to solicit comments from folks that do not use chips for every single game (regardless of whether the rules call for public or private holdings) as there is less value in listing every game in the BGG database. But rather is intended to highlight the games that most people (and groups) would find the most useful to have paper money (or other counters) replaced with poker chips.

And all other games in the 18XX set.

Use poker chips instead of the monopoly money. Speeds the game, simplifies money handling (and there's a lot of it), and helps keeps individual player cash holdings (VPs) and company treasuries clearly visible for easier and more strategic play.

It is commonly reported that moving from the provided monopoly money to poker chips will shave more than an hour off the playtime of most 18XX.

For those games with differentiated company credits (eg 1826, 1860 etc), we use a visibly different set of poker chips for company credits than the chips we use for normal cash (eg 8gram diamond chips for company credits instead of 11gram suited chips for normal money).

Chip values in the USA: 1/5/25/100/500/2,500/10,000
Chip values in the commonwealth: 1/5/20/100/500/2,000/10,000

1. Speeds the game by a significant amount because there is a large number of bi-directional transactions during the game. Also, allows easy visual gauge of both individual player cash holdings and company treasuries (and even facilitates exact counts if needed).

1B. Level of benefit provided = Large

2A. Total Bank = 15,000 (however, in our group we use an unlimited bank as we have never had the bank break).
2B. We use
$1 - 25
$2 - 30
$5 - 35
$10 - 44
$20 - 40
$25 - 32
$50 - 30
$100 - 45
$200 - 0
$500 - 9
$1,000 - 10
$5,000 - 0
Note that either the $20 or the $25 can be removed fairly easily with this configuration and technically this bank is $22,800 but we use the excess $1,000 to speed the final 3 ORs.

3A. Money is PUBLIC in this game.

One of many games that the AZ Boardgamers perfer to use chips in. There's so much money moving about in this one between buying cards and using early shows to get more money that it moves significantly faster.

For all of our games we usually use a 200 chip set in 3 colors, though depending on what set happens to be present on a given night, that can change from time to time.

1. Primary benefit is that game requires some kind of counter (often beads or 1/2 marbles are used).
1B. Level of benefit provided = Medium. Some kinda counter is required and poker chips makes it easier to see how much your opponent has across the table (which may determine whether you start a conflict or not).

OK, this is cheating a bit since the game doesn't come with money, but it does play better with poker chips. Let me explain:

Troops are valued by the cost to raise them expressed in the French monetary unit "ecu". An army has to make a panic check (usually just the levies and unreliable hangers-on, though it can also affect bowmen) when casualties first exceed 25% of the ecus of the whole force. At 50% casualties, an army must check morale for every unit. At 66%, the army flees the field and loses.

So, the best way I've found to do this is to make separate stacks of poker chips: two 25% stacks and one 16% stacks (the difference between 50% and 66%). Every time you lose a unit, toss out the appropriate poker chips of the first stack. When the first stack runs out, it's time to make the first check. When the 2nd stack runs out, you need to make the 2nd check and you're probably hosed, becuase a number of your units will probably flee pushing you over the 66% limit.

I'm trying to make some ecu poker chips using some scanned pictures from eBay auctions.

The game comes with cards that they expect you to put a marker on to track your glory and peril with.
Using poker chips makes it much easier to track and less easy to knock into and not remember how much glory or peril you should have.
Of course you need green chips for glory and red chips for peril.
I also use Heroscape miniatures for the characters and not the cut-and-fold character cards that it comes with.

You are supposed to keep track of your remaining energy points on a pad that came with the game. A pile of poker chips is much easier (and faster). Plus it lets the other players confirm that that each player is paying the correct amount. No "unintentional" math errors.

I bought two sets of the nice mini poker cheaps Meeple People sell mostly for this game. Though we haven't actually had a play since I bought them. But think it will really speed up play.

The only bummer is they use non-standard poker colors. But the weight and feel is pretty good. They stack well and don't take up a lot of table space.

Merchants of Amsterdam

My group had a recent play of the game with Poker chips. The frantic money exchanges, several times per game, went much more smoothly thi time.

There are 4 monetary denominations in the game. We simply laid out one of each 'bill' and put its poker chip on top of it as a key.

Use poker chips instead of the plastic coins. Speeds the game, slightly simplifies money handling, and helps keeps individual player cash holdings clearly visible for easier and more strategic play.

Chip values: 1/5

Use poker chips instead of the provided bingo chips. They're easier to handle, speeding play, and they make it easier to see exactly how many chips each player has left at any time.

Per the player chips are closed. However it is perfectly trackable so I play it with open chips.

The Geek? Yes, it's a good site. But - ah! You should have seen it before the rebranding! It was legible and a joy to read! All gone now, sadly, and so (mostly) am I because of it ...

I'm sorry, I cannot read this site regularly while the intense white background is in effect. I have eye health issues, and this is painful. I'll still make brief visits, largely for trades and rules questions, but my socializing here is done for now

Bad idea to print two different denominations on the flip sides of small chits - too easy to drop them and wonder which side is supposed to be up.

We use 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s - nothing larger is needed.

We not only use poker chips, we use little screens to keep money secret, though the rules don't mention whether secrecy is even allowed. They actually give two ways to track money: small, hard-to-handle chits or a track on the board easily bumped.
