Inspired by the upcoming wargame day, Mal, Pete and I finally got this recent GMT release to the table.

Every round is in two halves - First Churchill (Pete), Roosevelt/Truman if Roosevelt dies (Mal) and Stalin (me) debate various issues in a conference room. Players choose topics to debate and advance the issues on tracks towards themselves by playing staff cards.

In the second half you resolve the effects of those debates, and play out a very abstract WW2.

We played the medium game to learn (five conferences instead of ten) and it took us a little under 3 hours, though it would be shorter still the next time we played. Our first conference took an hour; the next three were about an hour combined.

There was very little negotiation (exactly one deal in fact, made between Stalin and Roosevelt in the first conference), and maybe we (well, they...) might have done better with a little more negotiation. As it was, Churchill and Stalin really gave Roosevelt/Truman a hard time, taking their production and "convincing them to help us" in various fronts.

In the end we failed to cause either Germany OR Japan to surrender! Oops! But that worked well in USSR's favour, winning very decisively.

It is a very interesting and unique game. Very much looking forward to the next play.

Next we were joined by Mark for a play of this light stock trading game. You buy cards in colours and try to sell them at the right time. Every time someone sells stocks, some colour may potentially disappear (unless you can insure them).

I am assured this game is really good with two players.

It is not with four.

Mark won.

After dinner Pete, Amy and I played this great new expansion for Russian Railroads.

New boards offer new tracks - Two are only partially built, so when you get to the point there is no established track, you choose a tile to lay over top each one offering different potential rewards.

There is also a track that forks, and you can only choose one of the directions. One is longer but more rewarding. The other pays off more quickly.

There are also income tokens that can be taken, giving you a reward each round, and some new engineers etc.

It adds a lot of life to a great game. More choices. And that was without the coal module added too.

I won.

Then Mal joined us for this new game from one of my favourite designers, Matthias Cramer (Lancaster, Glen More, Rokoko, Helvetia).

It uses the tiles selection mechanism from Glen More, but now they are worker placement action selection spaces. Once selected the action space moves to the back of the queue.

Players are building cars and trying to sell them to buyers who want cars that are best in certain categories. They are also racing in the Grand Prix.

The game moves fast, there are lots of different ways to earn points, and different approaches to the game. I like it a lot.

Even though Amy won.

Then Pete taught us this (overproduced) reprint of a Knizia classic. Amy knew the game really well already.

It took about half of the game for the real way to play click for the new players, but by then it was too late - Amy was pretty much unstoppable, and of course she won.

Would happily play again.

Tim received his new copy of this game that I love, but without English rules. I offered to teach him it, though I was working from memory and hadn't played it in almost a year, so they (Jason and Mike joined us) had to be a little bit patient with me.

Normally when teaching a game like this I would of course revisit the rules ahead of time to make sure I had it all right, but I'm pretty sure I didn't muck anything up too badly.

Except my game play. I did great with the Great Wall scoring, but didn't do well enough in anything else. Needed to get at least one more of the Emperor's rewards to be in contention.

I've forgotten who it was that won?

Jason explained this for myself and my 3 kidlets.
They enjoy it as expected, and argued endlessly over who got to draw a token from the bag, how fast was "too fast" to move their pieces, and where someone had or had not previously moved.
Good fun.

Elaine, Warren, Dean and I played two games of this. The first was a weird one where Warren rolled so many pestilences that he could close the game down early for a win with only 9 points. The second game was a bit more of a standard affair: Warren won again, but with 29 points this time. 3 of us scored exactly 20 points more than in the first game

Apart from Luke, we all though Luke was going to win comfortably. He knew best. He won, but certainly not comfortably.

A racing game through the arctic to reach the northwest passage and back to Greenland. Along the way you explore your route by placing tiles. However it's the person with most points who wins these are achieved by reaching destinations finding Inuits, straights, islands and supplies, all tHe while watching the seasons so your boat is not frozen or that your sled is not stranded on an island as the ice thaws.

Played this dudes-on-a-map civ game with Pete, Amy and Amie. It's more on the euro side compared to it's bigger cousins Clash of Cultures and Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game, and it also plays a lot quicker.

The general idea is to take control of resources and use technologies, buildings and wonders to score points from them. There's also the ability to attack your opponents like in most civ games, but this is limited to 4 times each a game and is rarely devastating.

After a rather peaceful first 3 eras exploring and pillaging the world's resources Pete and Amy went battle crazy in the last era and destroyed any chance I thought I had of winning. Amy took the win with around 100 points but the spread between everyone was only about 15 points so it could've been anyone's game.

Enjoyed both plays I've had so far and I'll be keeping a lookout for the expansion eventually.

In theory this is about competing at a trading post, but in some ways it feels like being a production line worker in a very disorganised factory. Each turn you draw a card that you keep in front of you, and they'll keep piling up unless you build them, and you'll get penalised if you don't build them, but all the materials you need are kept elsewhere and you need to order them in advance and they might not be in stock at the moment but maybe if you're lucky and you managed to juggle your orders correctly all the required materials will arrive at the same time, and you'd better hope they do because you don't have anywhere to store them.

Then your manager comes in and reminds you that you were also supposed to deliver a shipment of silk to Genova that day.

Having said that, I enjoyed the game, and the mechanic of accumulating cubes to be spent on future turns was fairly interesting.
