This got squeezed in with a kickstarter game I ordered as a stretch goal and I think it's something quick and easy to fill in a short lull.

A high reaction grabby game that resulted in a few near injuries! We played three games of this one, the last one being taken outside the game room in order to get down on the floor and make it more equal.

Do you know how hard it is to think of a quick game for 8 players? Eventually remembered that I could combine both my decks to fit up to 9 people. It ended in a tense showdown between two hoarders that was spectacular to watch!

Ariaflame, Leece, and I started the day with a quick game of this.

A strangely non-confrontational game, largely on account of an early shopping visit to Dis by Leece. Who then romped home with a massive win.

Ariaflame made a convincing second place, with me trailing a distant third.

Next, Ariaflame taught Leece and myself Cacao, which we'd only played on yucata.de.

A fun an elegant game, we both feel a lot more confident about it, now that we've played the cardboard. One that is likely to find a way to sneak into our collection.

Leece pipped me at the post in this one.

We finished up with a particularly vicious game of Cauldron.

I took an early lead, earning the ire of Ariaflame through some rather aggressive play, which set the tone of the entire game. Spells and special abilities were used to devastating effect by everyone.

In the end, though, the early nobbling just hardened Ariaflame's resolve, and she used a combination of her character abilities and clever spell use to grab a convincing win, with Leece coming second, and myself trailing in third.

Then it was off to the Astrofest!

Ian, Sam and myself sat down to tackle this rather innovative WWII-themed game. Each of us played an Allied corps commander (Patton, Bradley, Monty) vying in (as the title suggests) a race to the Rhine. In addition to the usual need to fight our way through enemy territory, we also had to contend with the mighty task of keeping our Corps supplied with ammo, food and petrol, delivered by precious trucks along increasingly congested roads.

In each turn, a commander is allowed to perform two actions, including moving a corps, getting one type of supplies into the Army supply base, getting trucks and moving supplies along the road net. Bonus actions may be in the form of cards acquired during the advance, or in exercising a commanders special talent.

Movement into enemy territory can result in a range of outcomes....from joyous reception by grateful (but usually hungry) liberated locals, to encountering a die-hard SS unit that won't succumb unless you have enough ammo, etc to fight it out.

The winner is the first player across the Rhine, or - if none achieve this by the time all German markers are placed (as part of a normal turn, each player can also attempt to hold up one of their rivals by placing a German marker or staging a counter-attack...he heh), by whoever has the largest number of medals.

Sam won the game, managing to get across in his second attempt, making good use of a bonus action card.

Overall, I think we enjoyed the experience....it was a learning game for each of us and it took a while to come to terms with a system in which logistics and supply have to be carefully juggled. It also takes a while to come to terms with some of abstractions in the rulebook. The allocation of trucks is something that we're still not sure we did correctly.

Definitely worth a replay, now that we have an inkling of game play and can exercise more strategy. Excellent components and, after a single play, seems to be a strong design.

As part of my The Battlestar Galactica Project, I organised a play of combination 9 in The Battlestar Galactica Project i.e. this game was without Pegasus, with base Exodus, without the Cylon Fleet Board, without Daybreak, going to Kobol, without a Cylon Leader, with Final Five, with Personal Goals. While it was planned to be a 5 player game, we eventually had only 4 (a fact which I will return to later).

There were also the following special rules:
1. We uses Pegasus Investigative Committees so that destiny was not revealed in skill checks.
2. We used both the Pegasus cylon overlay and Pegasus rule regarding handing off a revealed cylon's unrevealed loyalty cards.
3. To preserve the ratio of CAC to non-CAC crisis cards as per the base game, all the relevant Exodus crisis cards were be included and 34 of the total non-CAC crisis cards were randomly removed.

The players were:
Mark: Cally Tyrol (pre-sleeper cylon)
Keith: Felix Gaeta/Helo
Rowland: Laura Roslin
Me: Chief Tyrol

Only Rowland had previously signed up, and we did have 5 until Mr X, someone who had played once before, backed out citing his limited time and the potential for this game to take up some time.

Highlights:
-Mark being significantly outraged that with my last choice, I didn't pick a pilot
-Before even one jump, Mark getting an XO and for his two actions, shooting Gaeta and revealing as the lone cylon (
-This being a 4 player game, there was only 1 cylon card. The sympathiser loyalty card was in the loyalty deck which, if dealt, would either get a human in the brig or a revealed cylon with limited actions. Keith did not get the sympathiser loyalty card in his new character of Helo
-Centurions managing to get on board twice (groups of 1 and 2), with Helo being very bad and Chief very good in the armory
-A failed crisis meant that loyalty cards could no longer be looked at (not an issue with FF floating about...)
-Chief getting the admiral title
-The sleeper phase hitting with fuel in the red, ensuring no limited revealed cylon for Mark to have on his team
-Chief getting the sympathiser loyalty card and going to the brig, giving the admiralty to Helo
-Roslin using her OPG, drawing Presidential Pardon, playing it on Chief meaning poor Mark didn't even get the benefit of Chief having a turn in the brig
-The humans managing to jump to victory with all resources except Population in the red
-No PGs, but Helo and Roslin both having one FF card.

Thoughts:
-the sympathiser balancing mechanism is really unsatisfying, especially when combined with the Exodus loyalty rules. Mutiny and/or cylon leaders is the much better way to handle an even number of players. As such, it reinforces to me that (without cylon leaders), 5 is the number to play this game, so much better than playing with 4. That said, I'd still rather play it with 4 than not play it at all.
-Even if it might have been fun, I think it was a tactical error for Mark to reveal so early.
-Destiny was very good to us this game, which I'll take

Timeline is one of those games that seems to fit nicely into a gap. This time, Mark, Keith, Rowland and I moved on from Italy into more modern film and cinema, with Rowland the one to be the victor. I'm sorely tempted to get another version to mix into this, to continue to add variety to the cards.
