You can ALWAYS find an opponent - at anytime, anywhere on this particular planet.
Play someone via Vassal (which has a module for about every wargame ever made) and Skype: it is essentially playing just like in real life. Vassal has all the components to the game. You play on a "board" (actually a electronic version of it - a whiteboard): when you move a piece, your opponent sees it moving: you both seen the same screen. Vassal handles all the dice rolls/card plays. And, with Skype, you can trash talk, ask questions, whatever.
Just like being there!

And here the top games being played on Vassal recently: Vassal: What Wargames have been played in the last month?
