Perfect weather for board games, but when isn't it. Another big turnout for Thornlie, surely it's time to expand to 3 WABA meets a month.

Add your plays.

A recent Kickstarter arrival that I've been longing to play since I first started board gaming. I was joined by Pete and Ed and we learnt from the book which surprisingly was quite quick and painless.

It's a worker placement game about building a town in the wild west. But unlike many WP games, each player can place a cowboy on a space and once all the cowboys are down then any contested spaces have a duel. The winner gets to take the action and the loser gets their cowboy back so it's not too hostile. The overall aim is to make income from buildings you buy in the town and convert what you don't need for further spending into victory points.

Pete cottoned onto a good combo in the first turn and took a nice lead over myself and Ed early which he held onto for the entire game. I really enjoyed this and almost suggested we set up for a second game straight away but then I heard Ed had Blood Rage with him.

Sat down for a game of this with Andrew, Tim, Manny, and Adrian.

Long but interesting. I'd definitely check it out again.

Note: We completely missed top/bottom of the event deck rule depending on day/night.

Greg, Ian and I played most of a game of this recent, popular block game from GMT. Greg played as the Allies, Ian as the Soviets and me as the Axis.

The game is played over 10 years, starting in 1936. Though it simulates the climate at the time, you can play and never actually go to war.

I managed to spend most of the game playing a lot of diplomacy and making countries into satellites of Germany, while Ian pushed into India to give Greg a little grief. Unfortunately, as we were still learning how such things play out, Ian telegraphed his move and Greg had enough time to prepare for him, and it ended up being a very drawn out fight over a few years.

Ian ultimately took India though, while taking a stab at Poland (which I had already captured early into the game) since we were close to wrapping up and he had nothing to lose. He had spread himself a little too thin though, and I marched in to Russia and did a fair bit of damage.

We had to call the game with a few rounds to go, but I was far closer to the points victory than the other two.

An excellent game that we are going to play again at the upcoming wargames day.

While Ian and I waited for folks to get back from dinner, he quickly taught me this wargame filler about the battle of Waterloo.

Each player has a bunch of cards that represent different corps allowing different action depending on a dice roll. It's very luck dependent, but it's short, and you certainly have decisions to make.

Ian won, and the others were back, so we didn't get to have a rematch.

Next Ian taught Tim, Stu, Aimee and I this streamlined version of A Study in Emerald.

Streamlined compared to the original, anyway. It's still a bit convoluted.

Players place influence cubes to take cards. They assassinate other players or the monsters. Stuff happens.

It does a good job of recapturing the flavor of the original, but... I feel like the kitchen sink feel of the original is a big part of its charm. I like it, but am happy to stick with my first edition.

Stu won.

The same group sat down to play the new edition of Fury of Dracula. Since we had heard that the other group's game ran over four hours, we were a little bit worried - But we managed to get it done in under three.

That still does seem a little long, but I enjoyed the play pretty well.

We managed to get onto Dracula's (Ian) trail pretty early, and found him and managed to reduce him down 2 health after a couple of fights - But he then managed to give us the slip and it took a little while to catch him up again.

Unfortunately, Ian made a mistake and played an illegal move, the punishment for which took away the last of his health, but we'd have had him in the next couple of moves anyway.

Played 2 games of this with 4 others, including 2 newcomers, 1st game was won by Kniped who seemed to consistently score around 14+ each round and even though he had to subtract 16 for no puddings, still came out in front.

I won the second game, the scores were pretty even, everyone having got the hang of the game this time

My last game was Pandemic, also with 2 newcomers and Kniped. The 2 ladies really enjoyed it, especially as one was a nurse. We played the basic level and won pretty easily, in fact we never had any outbreaks, partially due to judicious use of the quarantine role and the event card that allows you to remove a city from the infection card discard deck

Great game a lot of information to keep track of though, would like a few more goes to fully get the hang of it. Thanks to Warren!

The Players: Alexis, Olivia, Nick, Warren, Louise & Myself.
Richard taught us Flash Point. Heaps of fun, very much enjoyed the cooperative style of gameplay. This way we all win together or we all lose together.
After some liberal usage of the axe to break through the walls (making the situation very precarious!) and some heroic saving of cats and dogs the team successfully pulled off the mission.
Definitely one for the play again list. Much thanks to Richard for teaching this one.

Dave really wanted to play this game again so decided to give it a go. Richard kindly taught us how to play and to be honest, I hardly listened as I was too busy silently stressing out about having to build a ship. What I didn't realise was that I had to build THREE ships during the game and I don't think my ship building skills improved.

Fun game and have decided I would play again. Most likely will play with beginners like myself...and not Richard who completely kicked our butts.

I've seen this being played on a popular YouTube channel. Looked really fun.

What I learnt...it all comes down to the group you play with. You have to get into the game and have some fun or it won't work. We had one player who decided that it wasn't for them and didn't particularly like how points were awarded.

Good party game.

For the last game of the evening Warren taught us (Alexis, Louise & Myself) Splendor.

I found the gameplay easy to pick up...while others took ages to make a move....(cough'Louise'cough)...overall a fun game of collecting gems that I would play again.

It was a close game ending in a tie break with Alexis coming out the victor (...I was so close to a win!!!!!cry)

Again huge thanks to Warren.

Two rounds in it became a five player as I joined them.

Van won via the benefit of the longest train, a well constructed infinite loop.

Not to Jesse's taste he elected to have Alienoid die a quick death rather than secure hearts to save him. The remaining four of us slugged it out until Van and Finn traded blows, with Van securing the win.
