I had a house full of gaming buddies all weekend. Miniatures, boardgames, RPG's, computers, cards- we've been in hock to them all for years. So we played games till we dropped. Here are the games we played when my expected 2-player sessions with Badger and Tony turned into marathon multiplayer sessions, with the timely arrival of Gav then Andy. arrrh

An old favourite that was the easy and obvious place to start: Gav and I have a long-standing rivalry over many games, and Badger was still hoarding his first ever victory from last year. So there were scores to settle and reputations to make. ninja

Badger 1
Gav -
Me 1

Tasty early wins for me and Badger then. Good close games as ever.

I really like this game. The rules are very well written, and trying to navigate the crazy dynamics of the ever-changing rules is always entertaining.goo

Andy -
Badger 1
Gav 1
Tony -
Me 2

Badger, Gav and me clip at each others' heels.angry
Andy and Tony have yet to make a showing.

My single most played game of the past 2 and-a-half years. An utter stalwart. We were trying out some new houserules, so we went back to the basics- Pegasus Bridge.

Badger 1
Me -

The new rules came into play a couple of times, and they looked interesting; but we never really got a chance to see them in action because Badger's Germans gave my British a thorough drubbing. I seem to remember the phrase "consolation victory medal?" floating around at one point. cool

That was Badger's last game of the weekend, so our scores for the evening totted-up as:

Badger 3
Gav 1
Me 2

So Badger won on the night (1 of my Fluxx wins was on Sunday). He was well pleased with himself! yuk

My favourite of the ancient classics, by a runaway mile.

Gav 6
Me 3

Gav played a sterling game- including a 4-pointer- to rub my face in it. yukyuk

Ancients is my favourite of Richard Borg's C&C games, and the one I really want to play more. The other players all like it, so getting Ancients on the table should be easy enough.

Gav 1
Me -

Gav pulls off a victory every bit as crushing as that Badger served at Memoir, only on 3 to 4 times the scale. Ouch! gulp

Final score for the night:

Gav 8
Me 4

Seriously gubbed. yukyukyuk

My favourite game of the night. Gav had 4 elephant units he couldn't resist the sight of, but he never even needed them to crush my over-ambitious manoeuvrings- I was trying to take him in a big left hook screened by light infantry and cavalry on my right y'see... snore

We played this a few times last year and weren't enthusiastic, then we found out that we'd screwed ourselves by getting the armour rules wrong. So we've been giving Doom another go, and we like it. The marines haven't won yet, but they've seen the exit twice, killed a Cyberdaemon with grenades, fists and a chainsaw. Oh, and Gav's marine cleared the entire forward section of the board single-handed- that's like nearly 3 board areas and some dozen monsters and more!

(True.) Pity I blew the mission then, eh? zombie

Andy 3
Gav, Tony and me -

So the final scores, of 20 games played, were:

Andy 3
Badger 3
Gav 8
Tony -
Me 6

Curses! devil

This just pipped C&C:A at the post for my favourite game of the weekend. This is a fabulous wargame. The division of the players into the invader and rest- the marines; the frag rules; and the combat dice mechanics together give the marine players a truly unique perspective. Doom actually puts you inside the machine as a 1st-person shooter, an experience quite different from that of the commander's-eye-view of any other tactical/skirmish game I can remember playing myself.

"Ain't seen nuthin' like it since Space Hulk!" cool

One that stayed on the shelf

Far and away my most played game of 2007 yet, and looking good to run the rest of the year out in the top spot too. I was looking forward to facing Tony's Russian partisans with my German platoons after our long run of games in recent weeks, but that'll have to wait for another time.

One that should be revisited soon.

A game I foolishly let lie for a couple of weeks in my FLGS' 2nd-hand racks. A chariot-race game showing off a lot more real-world physics than any Eurogame, Circus Maximus has the tables to prove it. I had a lot of fun playing this when AH first released it. I'm confident the lad's'll take to it.
