There seemed to be lots of new faces (well, there were new to me!) at this staple WABA meet. See what games got to the table and add what you played.

Warren had generously put out a call to teach this game, and managed to get 5 players (3 new) to tackle the Railways of England and Wales map. Everyone was soon under way acquiring bonds/debt, building track, and delivering goods. There were several instances of people messing (unintentionally and not) with other people's plans.

At the end, it was was first timer Donny who ended up with the win on 44, followed by fellow first timer Darren on 42, me on 38, and new player Stave and Warren both on 31.

It has been so long since I last played this game (April 2014 according to my records) and I really enjoyed going back to it again. This map in particular is much more forgiving than other maps. My memory was that I was terrible in generating money, so I immediately ditched the 'have the most money' baron card. I think I ended up with the most money at the end - who knows if that would have made a difference! cool

I refreshed Donny's and Steve's memory, and it was nice to be able to sit down and effectively get straight into a game (something that happened a few times this meet for me). A wonky end to Age 3 notwithstanding (one hand was somehow one card short despite me being sure of an even deal, and I don't think the card we randomly added got played anyway), it was Donny's 63 made up of lots of even scoring sections which was the highest, over Steve's 53, Darren's 45 and my 40.

Greedy Greedy Goblins is a light, silly-ish game about looking at a tile and placing tiles face down on cards, claiming the card when you think it has enough good tiles that you've seen/that you think other people have put down, and hoping that there is enough dynamite to make the card valuable and not too much that the card blows up. Oh and doing this all simultaneously with everyone else in real time.

It's light, not particularly serious, has that smidgen of skill that a better player will repeatedly win, and is not an altogether bad game to really lighten things up after/before/inbetween a more serious game.

Thanks to Tim for teaching it, and well done to Steve who won over Christophe, Warren, and I. My highlight was Steve needing one coin to win, and we all virtually simultaneously placing our tokens on cards just so Steve couldn't score that round.

Warren refreshed the rules for me, and promptly spanked me over 2 games/hands, leading/winning 217 to 42 when we called it after people had finished dinner.

Note: Perhaps don't send me to lead your expeditions?

El Grande is one of Warren's favourite games, so Tim's suggestion of it did not get turned down. There was much jockeying for area majority, and Tim's troops were the ones to all spread out over the board. Having only 3 meant that Tim was able to win the King action card with bids of 1 and 2!

Warren just pipped Tim 132 to 130, with me a little further back on 115.

The last time I played Stone Age physically, Tony Abbott was still Prime Minister, Everest grossed the most that week in the Australian box office (I know, I don't remember that film either), and the search for MH 370 was still going - the date was 27 September 2014.

We seemed to fly through this game - familiar players really helped. Tim shot out to an early lead, at one point threatening to lap me. Warren and I slowly inched ahead, and I was disappointed when they both triggered the end game as I didn't think I was anywhere close. But as keen players of (physical) Stone Age know, there are big points to be had in the cards and their multipliers. I managed to score a lot in tools but not enough, as Tim won on 206, with me on 192 and Warren on 175 in what we all felt was a high scoring game.

With five players, the game goes amazingly quickly.

Shaun won this one with a early lead gained by having multiple species

As I have been missing WABA a lot of late, I was pushing to get some of my new games to the table

Luckily, I found some players who were more than happy to give this one a go.

This game is quite interesting. It's fairly easy to teach and play, but it can be quite demanding on the players. Everyone agreed (plus some bystanders who wwatched) that this is a game that be better with multiple plays.

I believe Shaun won again as he took multiple extra ships and pilots and managed to fill them all!

Despite setting up a cooperation chain early on, Tim beat me by one point

One of my all time favourite games from childhood.

A nice bunch of chaps entered Overlord Morcar's first dungeon (Morcar played by Ben): Ivan the scented barbarian, Alan the mystical wizard of Thule and Karl the ugly, a dwarven axe-hefter of great renown.

Walls were bypassed by mysterious spells, ominous dungeon furniture was inspected thoroughly, wandering monsters were punished for interrupting our looting and corridors were blocked professionally as an unexpected clutch of undead creatures emerged from the far reaches of the catacombs.

The culmination of all this adventure: the evil gargoyle lurking in the centre of the dungeon was slain by wrathful wizard fire.

Great fun!

A very one-sided contest between the beleaguered forces of humanity (Agency) and the deep ones of Cthulhu's dominion.

After a fairly even start, the Agency forces were severely crippled by a cruel disaster (In the Wake of the Sleeper) which caused a chain of nasty effects to benefit the Cthulhu faction. The game was over before any of the heavy-hitters arrived.

Result: Cthulhu wins by three story cards to Agency's nothing.

We brought this in our pile of stuff and were asked for a game of it before we'd even sat down by the ever discerning Nick and Sandra.

It was our first play and Nick who had played before took us through.

Well, while this definitely has shades of Pandemic about it, it's a lot more focussed on the logistics, and the two disaster tracks focus the mind wonderfully.

Thoroughly enjoyable, thanks for making our first play so much fun.

Foiled the Hood's nefarious plan for a win.

The rest of the world crashed and burned but it was okay as long as we foiled the Hood. Must have been some spin doctoring from the Tracey Media that week!

Sandra and Nick were incredibly patient as we picked our way through the first two rounds of this surprisingly comprehensive wargame.

This is so much more true to the thrust and sense of experience of a battlefield than Memoir '44 which it may slightly resemble.

There's a lot going on in this game, but by the 2nd round of battle and largely helped by Sandra's intuitive grasp of troop capabilities and my use of terrain and tactics Sandra and I were coming along well with our half tracks, panzergrenadiers and tanks.

Then Rob rolled really well and blasted all, he thought, of my guys out of the objective. However "It's Not So Bad!" resulted in the survival of one very shell shocked guy who promptly failed two Morale Checks and ran screaming out of the Objective. Quite reasonable under the circumstances really. But poo for our Axis score at that point which had been looking very good.

Nick's infantry assault on Sandra's innocent tank was very impressive, resulting in a very sorry for itself tank. This was all going very interestingly, and we're all keen to have another go, with a bit of research required as to how some of the stuff works.

But in short, I like it, especially the way they assign troops to command staff.

We were scheduled for an early night, so regretfully we packed up. In the dawn light today we set up on the muddy paddock at Perth Airport, and the Antonov made us a very impressive landing.

Always good fun to engage in some harmless bribing and lies! Deals were made, contraband was smuggled...and I came to the realisation that I was a pretty poor Sheriff who was too trusting. shake

Guess that just makes me super honest and trusting?

Forgot how fun this game was...despite how bad I am at lying.

So from what I've read, this game is supposed to be awesome. Problem was, the four of us didn't know how to play it and the instructions had us a little confused.

We attempted to play this game twice and in the end we gave up.

I can see the merits of the game and I think if I knew how to play it properly it would be lots of fun. Definitely would like to give it another go, but preferably with someone who knows the rules!
