Myself and Tegan started the day with this enormous two player game. This was our third game in recent weeks and as always I played the shadow as Tegan tried to sneak her filthy hobbitses into Mordor.

I managed to all but eliminate the forces of Rohan and push Gondor back into Dol Amroth, taking Minas Tirith very early. However, while the war raged the fellowship made its way steadily to Mt. Doom.

In the end, I was one point away from a military victory and from corrupting the ring bearer when the ring was destroyed, with Merry (or Pippin?) making a last minute sacrifice.

This was a very tight play of a great game.

Myself and Tegan were joined by Mark for my favourite game. I got my hand limit increased early on, and a combination of the Sewer and Basilica kept my vault healthy enough to ensure a victory.

Myself, Tegan and Rowland played this game I picked up at Essen last year (and is currently on Kickstarter). It's a simple drafting game with set collection and bluffing. I liked it but I think it definitely needs more players in order to work to its strengths.

Tegan and myself played this great euro after dinner. I focussed heavily on fulfilling barrows, only completing the market good orders on the board, and took the victory.

Next up I taught Tegan the new iteration of one of my favourite card games. I like this version a lot. It still feels mostly the same, except accelerated (deals and spoils pay off immediately, for example). I miss the leaders from the original game, although most seem to think they caused a balance issue which I never saw in my plays.

The biggest benefit is that it's now very easy to teach. The original game was a huge pain to get past the first game with fiddly rules and lots of iconography.

It's also incorporated some of the updates to the system that Imperial Settlers introduced, but I definitely prefer this to Imperial Settlers, as there are no faction decks, so you're not tied into playing how your faction is designed to, and not very dependent on drawing your faction's key cards.

So I'll still happily play the old version with people who know it well, but I'll always play this with people who don't.

To finish up I taught Tegan this quick little drafting game. I really enjoy this one, it takes maybe two or three games until you're very familiar with the small deck of cards, then it starts to unfold layers of decisions that I didn't expect when I first played it. I won this time.

Mark, Rowland, Pete (Rebels) and myself (Imperial) continued our campaign of the Imperial Assault core game. In this mission the Rebels had intel on a super-awesome warship the Imperials were building and they wanted nothing more than to destroy it. On the line was a pair of Duros saboteur allies. If the Rebels won and claimed their prize it could make things very difficult for the Imperials in future missions.

The Rebels moved a bit slowly and cautiously in the first few turns while taking heavy damage to the saboteurs. This left them with too little time and firepower to have a decent crack at the ship so they resigned themselves to picking up the items that were strewn around the hangar.

I muddled my way through teaching Aidden, Andrew, and Louise this classic Russian politics game. It had been some time since I had played this, and I know I got some rules wrong (e.g. the Defence minister can either call a trial or do a condemnation, not both). Warren joined us and helped me get the rules more correct. You are trying to get 'your' politicians into different positions of power, the issue being that they could actually be influenced by other political masterminds as well (sometimes with more influence than you!). The winner is the player who gets their faction to wave 3 times from the balcony as any Party Chief.

I decided to play with the classic politicians and never having played with them before, with the intrigue cards. They effectively add another layer of chaos into proceedings.

Taken from Warren's notes:
Round 1 - Aidden succeeded (after cheekily putting some influence - more than me - on the aging initial leader)
Round 2 - Aiddden failed to wave
Round 3 - Louise succeeded
Round 4 - Aidden succeeded
Round 5 - Andrew succeeded
Round 6 - Andrew succeeded
Round 7 - Andrew succeeded to win the game

I finally was taught and played this much-referred to game (thank you Warren). Sitting at the table was Warren, Aidden, Andrew, Gracie, and me. Warren took out the win by being the first to seven green apples followed by Aidden (5), me (4), and Andrew and Gracie each on 3.

Andrew taught me (and refreshed the others), having the same 5 players as Apples to Apples. Final scores - Andrew (90), Warren (82), Gracie (79), Aidden (77) and Ernest (56), I having miscalculated in the last turn buying an event but forgetting to expand my colosseum. I'll have to think more about what I thought about it - it was ok, but it didn't seem to really 'grab' me.

In the land of Terra Mystica dwell 14four different peoples in seven landscapes, and each group is bound to its own home environment, so to develop and grow, they must terraform neighbouring landscapes into their home environments in competition with the other groups.

Terra Mystica is a game with very little luck that rewards strategic planning. Oh oh, there is my problem right there.....strategic planning. Operational planning, tactical planning, crisis management, dealing with today and tomorrow, now they are my thing. Planning for next week and beyond....they way I look at it I might not even be alive to implement it so why bother....

Anyway I digress...Andrew suggested we finish our evening with this game and was willing to teach it. Knowing this game appeals to many and having seen it played a number of times I was interested in giving it a go. This was before I knew the aforementioned strategic planning requirement.

Terra ahoy, let the mystica begin!
Nomads - Aidden
Witches - Andrew
Mermaids - Gracie
Halflings - Warren (me, a halfling....more like two of them in a giant costume).

Final scores - Andrew (97), Warren (90), Gracie (88) and Aidden (73). Second game in a row where I was leading comfortably before getting run down in the final scoring. See - quality short term operational planning but lacking a longer term strategic plan!

Amy, Adrian, Elaine and I first played this neat tile laying game with a 'formal' garden theme. I think Amy was the first to reach the far side of her garden and from there she was able to put her nobles into some high point locations, securing the victory after row bonuses, etc were counted up. This game had a nice feel to it and lasted just the right amount of time.

Amy joined the same group for a 5 player game of Lancaster which seemed a good number as it made the displacement of workers (knights) quite common, and at times lots of squires were being played. I managed to win this one by doing well on end game bonuses on a couple of different things. Lots of fun, and well taught by Amy, with no omissions

The same group played a quick game of Cartagena before Elaine had to make tracks. Amy bided her time, building up a massive hand of cards that helped her come from behind and be the first to get all 4 explorers on-board.
