I've loved card games for as far back as I can remember. I used to play simple games with my sister, then I played a lot of cribbage with my mum (usually in the garden in the summer - a glorious memory), then lots of games (usually 'take that!' games like Oh Hell) with kids at school, moving on to more strategic games in college like Contract Whist (aka Nomination) and Great Dalmuti (aka Presidents and Arseholes). However it was only when I discovered Boardgamegeek that my eyes were opened to some amazing games like Coloretto, 6 Nimmt! and No Thanks.

Considering the response to the first Round geeklist it seems I'm not alone in loving card games!:

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/geeklist/20998

No doubt you'll be familiar with the format of this list, but I don't think its ever been done for card games. Hopefully this round will determine the 16 best card games ever - and we'll move on from there.

RULES:

1. Vote once for the better card game in each match-up
2. Vote by clicking on the Thumb for the game you want to win each match-up
3. Add a comment if you want, but note that comments will NOT count as votes

This round ends Sunday, April 29th at 11:00 pm BGG time.

In the first Round I took the games from a variety of geeklists about the best card games available and the general games rankings list for card games. The definition of a 'card game' is quite wide and as such includes a diverse selection. Some games you may not consider a card game, such as St Petersberg, Taboo, Werewolf, etc. If your view is that it isn't a card game then the solution is simple: Don't vote for it. Maybe even vote for the opposition. The guideline I tried to stick to when deciding if a game was a card game was whether cards were the main component and no board was required.

I seeded the games exactly according to their BGG rankings. Seeded games were then split across the 64 games in the match-ups so that in theory the higher seeded games should meet up later in the tournament. All the lowest ranked card games were entered as WildCards. I started with a list of 76 games (so 12 Wild Cards), but then another 30 Wild Cards were added by other BGG users!

The Wild Card system meant that Wild Cards could get into the main tournament in Round 2 and any first round losers could re-enter under Wild Card rules. In the event no Wild Card game got enough votes to make it into the last 32, but 5 losing games did get enough votes to beat another winner.

When I came to rank the games for Round 2 I found myself looking at several great games that would miss the cut that I thought deserved to make Round 2. Also 'Top 40 Card Games' sounds great.... So I caved in and am having some additional Wild Cards for this round from the near misses from Round 1.

This Round the Wild Cards will play against each other and any winning Wild Card that scores more votes than a winning game in the main competition will knock that game out and replace it in Round 3.

I have re-seeded the games based on the number of votes in Round 1, but the order will not change in future rounds. The Top 20 seeds have their seedings noted on this list.

Commiserations to Razzia! and Edel Steine & Reich (which both won their match-ups, but were bumped out of the top 40) and Loot (3rd highest Wild Card), which all miss the final cut.

Note: Due to a change in the Thumbs system, I will get a personal Thumb for each vote on this list. This is unfortunate as these are not merited recognition for me personally. Hopefully this will soon be addressed. Or GeekPolls will become fact. Until then this is still the best method to run competitions. See here for discussion on this:
