WABA held a Pandemic Survival Tournament (see https://boardgamegeek.com/thread/1583388/pandemic-survival-j...). There were four teams that took part. Each team had their own board and started with the same hands. Each board had their player deck and had different specialists. However, each board received events at the same time and there was one common epidemic deck, ensuring cities were infected at the same time.

Three teams were looking for the final different cure on their board, and two teams found the last cure on the same turn. It came down to how many actions they took, and the winning team found the cure one action quicker. Congratulations to the winning team of Roger, Owen, Amelia, and Dean!

Warren took notes and will, in time, post further details.

I joined Jason, Genevieve, and Richard for some pre-arranged Dominion playing with some of the newest expansion (random setup). In the first game, Genevieve won on 36 over Jason on 35, Richard 20 and me 16. In the second game, Jason won on 27 over Richard 26, Genevieve 14 and me 11.

It had been some time since I played Dominion and really enjoyed getting back to it.

Richard taught Annetta, Jason, me, and Genevieve this dexterity game involving playing cards on a bin lid, having to play more and more cards while not causing the growing unbalancing pile tip over. Annetta, Jason and I shared the wn over Richard and Genevieve.

I had dabbled in playing (only playing, not buying) the first edition but had not gotten around to trying the second edition yet. Mark ran me through the differences and while I was unsurprisingly thrashed (using the core set's suggested decks of Baratheon/Night's Watch loosing to Greyjoy/?), I appreciated the experience.

Look, do I need to really spell out how much I like this game? There's a reason why for me, it is The Game. Rarely any obvious moves, hidden loyalties, struggling against the odds, working out whether a disagreed move is a different opinion or a sabotaging attempt, trying to discern truth from lies or having to tell them...

I regularly bring BSG without any expectation of being able to play it, but as luck would have it, there were more than enough interested players willing to get it to the table and the time free to do so. Genieve was unsure whether she had played it before (it turned out later she had), so we decided to go back to a straight base game (save for Pegasus' automatic hanging off of revealed loyalty card).

Mark: Zarek
Richard: Bill Adama
Genevieve: Apollo
Me: Helo
Eric: Boomer

Highlights:
-pre-sleeper, passing Legendary Discovery
-some eyebrow raising distance choices by Richard and some disagreements about some of Mark's decisions
-a relatively safe pre-sleeper phase, resources dropping normally, Mark opining that there were no cylons pre-sleeper
-some strongly disagreed moves by Mark, resulting in him appointing Genevieve Arbitrator after discussions about removing him from office by me, Eric and Richard
-Some long stretches without jump preps
-Richard using his OPG to grab a fistful of cards
-Eric pulling off a masterstroke on his turn after Mark and Richard had put in cards into a skill check, telling me and Genevieve not to put in cards. This revealed Mark as a Cylon!
-Despite Mark being brigged, he still was president, and resources kept dropping resources.
-After some turns, Richard started openly discussing with Mark after a low distance jump, soft revealing as the other cylon as Admiral.
-Tough choices followed as to how to combat both title holders being cylons, Mark having gotten free, Eric having gotten free, but Genevieve being brigged.
-After Mark revealed, it was a very tough second last jump with multiple CACs and few jump preps and resources sank closer to 0.
-Once Richard revealed and I became Admiral, picking the last distance, the last jump saw crisis constantly threatening to end the game through resources lost (except the ever present fuel) until the humans jumped away to a very close win!

Thanks to all who played, and sorry to those who wanted to but couldn't get a space - I know I'll play BSG many more times at WABA meets in the future!

Adam, Michael, Jason, Vince and I had prearranged to play the cooperative scenario included in the Borg Cube With Sphere Expansion. I had brought along a fleet from my favourite race, the Romulans. Adam and Vince were Federation, Jason was Klingon, and Michael Dominion. We set up surrounding the massive cube and the experienced players around the table judged that it should be easy to destroy it. I had heard that it was a challenging scenario and wondered what complications could make it so. I didn't have long to wait. The scenario comes with two decks of cards, one for the Borg attack, and another which throws up a challenge every turn. This challenge limits which ships can fire, and gives a reward and penalty for achieving certain results during the turn. The first card immediately threw our plans into disarray, and each succeeding card would do the same! This deck is what made the scenario so hard.
However we soldiered on, adapting our tactics turn by turn. Eventually the cube was destroyed but the cost to the alliance fleet was massive, with both the Romulan and Dominion losing three quarters of their forces.
Excellent fun, and thank you to the other players for making it so.

Christophe had brought his new copy of this and was eager to try it out so we sat down with Stephen to play. It's a mish-mash of resource management, area control and exploration with a little bit of combat.

It's also pretty much a point salad as almost everything you do gets you closer to putting one of your six stars on the board. You get to do this for building all of your mechs, placing all of your meeples, maxing out your power track, winning your first two combats and a few other things I've forgotten. The difference here is there's also a very important popularity track. The higher you are on that track the more each of your stars, as well as money and resources, are worth at the end of the game.

I was afraid this game would be too similar to Kemet or Cyclades (games where someone gets ahead, gets bashed by everyone else and second place wins.) but I was pleasantly surprised. It's possible that these issues would present themselves in a four or five player game, but with three it was fine. There was only one combat, which I started and won to place my last star on the board and end the game, winning with Christophe coming in a close second.

There's really nothing new here, so I don't think it's the revolutionary game that lots were hoping for. I also personally feel that some of the production choices are a little tacky (I really don't like the resources that look like someone made them out of modelling clay). The game itself seems pretty decent though, and I enjoyed it more than I was expecting to.

We were joined by Warren and Mark for a five player game of Glory to Rome, with Stephen having not played and Christophe needing a refresher.

Five player GtR is always pretty unpredictable, and the game end is also more likely to be mechanical (with the deck running out) than intentional.

In the end Mark pulled out a victory by about three points (I think?), having finished some three point buildings at the last minute as well as having a healthy vault.

Next up (or maybe this was before GtR..?) I taught Warren, Christophe and Stephen the latest iteration of the 51st State / Imperial Settlers system.

This really is so much easier to teach than original 51st State, and I prefer it to Imperial Settlers (mostly due to not being tunnel-visioned by your faction deck).

The game was VERY tight, with Christophe winning, and myself and Warren both tied, one point behind.

Next up we were joined by Tiffany (I think? sorry I'm pretty bad with names) for an EPIC five player game of Condottiere. We filled the entire board, and I think we even had to replay the final battle as it ended in a draw the first time around.

This made for a very tense ending, with Christophe and Tiffany competing for the win. Tiffany ended it in spectacular fashion by placing three 10 value mercenaries in a row and finishing it with a key, all after Christophe had passed.

A great play of a great game.
