Greg mentioned elsewhere he was interested in trying Trajan, a Stefan Feld release from all the way back in 2011!

I taught it to him, and refreshed Mal, Christophe (and myself - it had been awhile).

The (not terribly strong) theme is kind of general Ancient Rome. Players attempt to influence politics, military, trade... OK, you move bits in an attempt to set off a combo that scores a bunch of points.

The really interesting thing about the game is the mancala which players use to select their actions, and also control the length of the game rounds (or lose control as it were).

The way the action selection works is pretty difficult to get your head around right away - like even once you get down how it works, you thin have to figure out how to make it actually work well, but we were off an running pretty quickly.

Mal had a slight confusion over how shipping worked (thinking he got to take two of the actions the space offered each turn instead of just one) that wasn't picked up until a little late in the game. But that wasn't nearly as bad as my misunderstanding of one of the end game scoring tiles, that I mistakenly though could score multiple times, not just once, basically throwing away my entire last year. oops!

Anyway, it was still a very competitive score between us, and a very fun play. I hope I get it back to the table again soon, while I remember how to play.

Christophe ended up taking the win, as I predicted before we began.

Greg had to run off to the C&C game and Christophe jumped tables for another game. Pete and Mark arrived, and Mal taught us Great Western Trail, a recent and very popular release from Essen.

I LOVE the theme. I'm a big fan of classic westerns, and have seen Red River several times. I wish the game did a much better job of evoking the theme. Is there a good game about a cattle drive? That would be a super interesting theme to me.

Anyway, the mechanics seemed good, but the game got slower and (at least for me) less interesting as it went.

It took us 3 hours, and I didn't feel like what it offered was worth three hours.

Having said that, maybe it just should be played with four new (or basically new), in a convention setting? This play didn't work for me at all. I would try it again though.

Mark won by about double every other player.

We had two games of this, first being Keith, Elaine, Leece, and myself, and then at the end of the day with Priya, Leece, myself, and a gentleman who's name I did not catch.

One of our all-time favourites, it combines worker management, guided storytelling, and resource management into a single seamless whole.

My first game for the day was playing in the Smash Up Tournament. I was paired with Shaun and Luke, choosing Steampunk/Sharks and discarding Spies. It was a super tight game down to the last base scored and Shaun would emerge victorious on 11, myself on 9 and Luke on 8.

Full tournament results here.

The far superior version of Diamant owned by Richard. Pretty sure he convinced every person at the table to buy it! Played this with Kym, David, Anneke, Rebecca (nice to meet you all!) and of course Richard.

The winner was David with has massive haul of diamonds!

Basically Cards Against Humanity meets the Cyanide & Happiness comic strip. Players take it in turns revealing a top card from the deck of comic frames, then select a frame of their own to go before or after the revealed frame. This person then acts as a judge to the remaining players completing the third frame.

Played this with Dave, Kym, Richard, Rebecca, Anneke, Candace & Martin (nice to meet you both as well Martin & Candace).

Some truly hilarious moments through the whole game, dare I share them here is the section of the game I had to judge. The two left-most cards are the first two pieces with all right-most cards to these up for decision;

And the winner...

And just because everyone decided to pull out all stops, here is the very final round. To save photo spam the winning frame was the awkwardly-timed felatio...

Patiently waiting for the end of the Smash Up Tournament with Penny for the remainder of our players we would be joined by Shaun, Caroline, Claire & Kent. As always nice to meet you all.

First to places would go through and Kent would just beat me to the post by a few points. Shaun was a predicted winner from the start with his solid first two rounds.

So got all setup for Learn 2 Play and the tournament, looked pretty good if I do say so myself. Spent most of the time just talking about the game with people passing by but sadly most people were engaged in the Formula De tournament or other games.

Kent would come to my rescue and sit down for a Learn 2 Play session and outplay me with Peter Pan vs Captain Hook, earning himself a promo card. Quickly realising that I wouldn't get any more players I offered Kent to take part in the "tournament". We swapped decks and it appeared that Peter Pan was the better deck on the day.

(Special kudos to Amy for catching Kent off guard, lying about a photo being taken to then get a great photo of him smiling!)

Still happily built a whole deck with cards from the new set, Legacy Lost, to give away to Kent in the event he may want to play in the future. Enjoy!

A game I am more fond of than I should be!

Simultaneous play, drawing, and trying to identify other players' drawings at the same time.

I just had to be in on a game of Betrayal with Kent, Dave, Anneke, Rebecca & Candace!

(Note Kent's trademark no-smile-in-photos)

We got to certainly the largest house I've had in a game of Betrayal before the "haunt" would occur. Rebecca would be the revealer however chosing the explorer to the right our betrayer would be Kent! Finding out we had to kill a phantom to save a girl then either disarm the bomb or escape the house.

We agreed that Anneke could destroy the phantom instantly woth her feather and my 7 knowledge was more than enough to disarm the bomb. Solid plan!

Turns out I couldn't roll so well! We decided to send everyone bar myself to attempt to break out the front door with the girl whilst I continued to try and disarm the bomb, unaware that Kent only had to roll a 5 to blow us all up. It would be my third attempt of rolls that would allow us to succeed in disarming the bomb and win!

Over my delicious dinner of Mongolian Beef I met Godlief who was eager to play some games he brought with himself. With both of us having played 7 Wonders before we figured Duels would go down well.

Much thanks to Warren for ironing out a few queries we had (like every five minutes for the first twenty) we soon worked out how streamlined the game had become. I also worked out how much Godlief liked hurting my plans.

Despite expecting a crushing victory by Godlief it actually came out pretty close;

Ignore the tick in the green box, quickly realized that was for Science victory and not just a general VP victory.

Ian, Christophe and I played this one

I quite enjoyed this one. It has some of the movement elements from pandemic i.e. being in the right city to fly or to solve a case. It also uses dice based worker placement which leads to some action blocking and then it has some pretty versatile multi-purpose cards.

The competition is pretty tight as it's a race to 6 missions completed and even with some reliance on dice rolls there are plenty of ways to get modifiers and do other actions to keep you progressing. The game also accelerates as you play it.

The addition of target symbols that you are used to complete missions to the bottom of completed mission cards ensures it doesn't outstay its welcome.

Even though the theme is different (spies) I would describe this really simply as all vs all pandemic. Moving spies around the world map to gather and then complete your objectives.

I had a game of this one with Mal and Mark using the advanced corporate era cards. Mark seemed to be focusing on cards that would grant points at the end of the game, Mal spent some time dropping asteroids to take resources away from Mark and myself while I took to planting as many greeneries as I could. In the end Mark took the win and we had Mars looking like this.

This is definitely my game of the year, it has a level of engine building that I very much enjoy and offers a great deal of variety in strategy and the way Mars turns out at the end of the game.

Played a game with Christophe, Renato and James

This is a game about nations supplying their energy needs while trying not to pollute their lands (or in Renato's case, deliberately dousing France in radiation). The focus is really on the energy side of things. It doesn't share a whole lot with The Manhattan Project beyond the general style.

The worker placement game is pretty basic. You're grabbing/converting resources to buy buildings, extra workers or power stations with a goal towards victory points.

To keep it interesting they have a pollution track which is broken into 6 parts which when depleted trigger events that affect all players. That track is a pool of resources that is constantly being consumed by the players so a player can drastically influence the pace of the game by "attacking" that track. The downside is that when you do an action that results in taking a pollution token off that track, you're typically adding it your own player board where you're covering up spaces that would yield victory points when events are triggered or at the end of the game.

There are also achievement cards which can only be obtained by generating power, which is one of the causes of those pollution tokens being taken from the track. These can incentivise people to "cash out" early and further accelerate the game.

Overall I didn't find anything particularly special about this one but it's a perfectly passable worker placement game and I would probably play it if someone suggested it. The company was good

Christophe and Celine had never played a pandemic game so we checked out this variant of the game.

It was good fun and while still fundamentally pandemic, the twist on some of the mechanics and new things freshened it up for those of us that have played 1000 games of Pandemic

Ian kicked my butt in this evolution of Tides of Time. It adds a simple madness mechanic where some of the cards give you madness tokens at the end of the round. Over the course of the game if you accumulate 9 or more by the end of scoring you lose the game.

It's such a simple game but adds another layer to the decision-making process and sets up a secondary strategy if you're doing poorly after the first or second round, send the other play mad.

Of the two games this is my preferred version and the addition of madness doesn't really reduce its place as a nice light-weight 2 player game.

I think I played this on next in the Freod tournament, and thanks to the generosity of Freod with prizes received a copy for my shared 4th place.

This one I enjoyed too.

Just missing out on the copy of Lightning, which is a great little game d'oh!

This reflex and matching game has a squishy monster to squish in the middle.
