December, 2016

While I'm in Europe I've shifted these geeklists to monthly instead of weekly. Even though I've got a game group over here, my work keeps the gaming opportunities limited. Luckily, I was able to travel home for a week during the holidays, saw friends & family, and got in some great gaming.

I'll start with the biggie. By "big" I mean it's big news, and also that's a larger/longer game than I typically prefer. This was a rare opportunity for me to play it at all, much less with my friend Brian who talked about it on a recent podcast. He loves it, and I can see why. For gamers who like to chew on plenty of stuff to do, it's here. The theme appeals to many, myself included. I'd be happy to play once in a while.

A thematic question, though. (I realize I'm being a bit silly in this.) We're driving cattle through the open range to Kansas City. That makes sense. Those various destinations are the ultimate market, right? I thought the cattle were driven to KC, and from there transported by rail to the stockyards at Chicago...and from there as meat to Eastern cities. In the game, though, many of these destination markets look more like sources for the cattle (Colorado Springs, Sante Fe). Obviously it doesn't matter for gameplay. Neither does the oddity of wanting to cull a mixed herd of cattle by the time you get to Kansas City.

I'd looked for this dice game (and Noch Mal) at Essen, but ran out of time & money on my last day. Never got to it. This was my chance. I liked it ok, but really thought it overstayed its welcome (for what it is). If the next play doesn't improve I'd even knock off a star.

Still a beloved classic, for me. I played with my daughter & her boyfriend, both of whom play it at their respective colleges. All the time, apparently. Funny thing--we'd just talked about how no one ever plays Monopoly by the correct rules...and then I watched these smart 20year-olds proceed to play Catan incorrectly! It was the setup. I hadn't read the rules in a long while, so I deferred to their understanding, thinking maybe it had changed or been streamlined. Nope, they were just doing it wrong. They built the board, flipped the resources, but randomly distributed the numbers (face-down), placed initial settlements & roads, and only THEN flipped the numbers. Shoot, I was on a 6-8 intersection of wheat, and another 9-5 of stone, so guess what happened? I destroyed them. Later I re-read the latest almanac/rules. I can sort of see how they got confused by the canned-setup for beginners, and the "random" (but not TOO random) setup for experienced players.

Perfect info abstracts aren't my thing, but they often play wonderful. The hidden identity of this one disrupts the perfect info (a little), and makes it possible to play very casually. A surprisingly successful game to play once in a while with casual players.

My Polish souvenir from Kraków, their spiffy version of an old favorite I'd left at home. I think my original edition is easier to see on the board, but this is also nice.

Another couple brought this over on light game night. I think the cards are a little too much for really casual play, but the geeks and the tactical players need a little more than the game would have, otherwise.

Kind of like Kabaleo, here's another very abstract game that works well with nongamers (to my surprise) due to the simplicity of the rules.

Social deduction games aren't my thing, but this one was light & short enough to be fun. The Sherlock/Moriarty bomb theme works better for me than the Cthulu one would've.

Another little Essen card game for me. I'd been eager to try this, but was kind of disappointed. It's ok, and may improve with a large group, but am afraid it will end up in a no-man's land for my games (too light for gamers, too much for non-gamers). Both groups will have some people who find it a little pointless.

An Essen title that's STILL waiting for English rules? That's crazy. Luckily I remembered enough, and an overview in the forums here on BGG filled in the rest. It's the Prisoner's Dilemma in game form, with some chaotic scoring thrown in. I don't think it all works, but my friends continue to like it more than I do. Maybe I'm wrong.

When in France...? I re-acquired this old one, and a novelty toy guillotine to set up with it. Looks good, and plays easy enough, but clearly needs a rules tweak to limit the number of cards held in-hand.

I saw this on the shelf at our game cafe during the Light/Short game group night in Paris. It was a good fit for the group. At three rounds, a little long, but simple to explain and fun to play.

I think of this one, along with Paperback, as recent word games that try to do something new with an old type. They both are somewhat successful. I think word game fans would really enjoy both. That's not me, though, and I still find myself locking up when only the simplest/shortest words come to mind.

Allow me to be snooty here. I know the Alea version called Royal Turf is difficult to find, but I think it's superior. Its horses all have the same name/color, so the reddish horse is called Red Fox every time, and easy to spot. Not so with the Winner's Circle edition. They vary in "pole position", and movement point distribution of the saddle/cap/horseshoe rare outcomes, but never the common horse-head die face. It's just a more polished game.

I don't understand why this game continues to fly under the radar. It's a great drafting game from Richard Garfield, produced by Queen. That's kind of the best of both worlds--a nicely produced game that is well-polished.

Attika I was so-so on this when first released a dozen years ago. Now online I'm warming to it.

Automobiles Hey, this is pretty neat! I'd skipped it, thinking it tied in to Trains, which I thought was just ok.

Cacao Solid fun. Bought the real version for my nephews.

Castles of Burgundy It would help if I would read & remember the rules. But I never liked this one much.

A Few Acres of Snow Still an all-time favorite

Helios I'd heard good things when new, then poof! it was gone. Now I get to try online and it seems kind of cool. Need to try more.

Industrial Waste An evergreen classic for me.

Maori Actually played once ftf this year, and many, many more times online.

Pergamon Another evergreen classic for me.

Port Royal Still wonderful. Would an All About episode be good for this one?

R-Eco This has mostly lost its appeal.

Stone Age Still good, still solid. I'm happy to see a starvation strategy win, and also happy to see it lose.

Thurn & Taxis Underappreciated (ha! it won the SdJ) gem, says me.
