You are once again invited to take part in the monthly Golden Turtleback miniature painting contest.

The contest has kept its original name in honour of its founder David Anderson (turtleback). It's usually run by Cerith Morgan-Jones (Bastion of insanity). I'm merely keeping the contest going until Cerith returns.

Please give this geeklist a thumb to help get it to the front page, and click on the images you thumb and give the actual images thumbs up as well !

The more contestants the better! New painters are more than welcome!

RULES

1) Add the game of the miniature(s) you painted as an item to the list. Insert the image(s) in the body of the entry. Use the format [imageid=xxxxxmedium] where xxxxx is the id of the picture.

2) The image you submit must have been uploaded during December 2016. Gallery images are okay but submitted images are preferred.

3) One entry per person. You may submit images of a single miniature or a group at your discretion.
You may, however, use either:
up to two 'normal' pictures of your entry, usually, the front and back of the miniature(s)
OR
one image of a montage/collage of your entry.

4) You are the artist. Please do not submit miniatures painted by someone else.

5) Make of the mini, scale and paints you used are appreciated.

6) The contest will end on 31 January 2017. The winner will be the picture with the most thumbs. Winners will appear in the next months’ list.

7) Users can thumb as many entries as they like.

In the interests of maintaining a level playing field for all entrants, if an entry does not conform to the above rules, it will be removed. New contestants will be notified beforehand so that they can edit their entry or submit another one that meets the criteria.

PRIZES

I'm reliant on tips to offer prizes. Any tips received will awarded as follows:

1st place: 35%, plus an exclusive microbadge! Microbadge: Golden Turtleback Painted Miniature Monthly Contest winner
2nd place: 25%
3rd place: 15%
Encouragement Awards: 25% (will be given to non-placing worthy entries with a bias to new participants.)

One random thumber will receive 5 !

I have been waiting for this troll for a while so I had lots of time to think about how to paint him.
In the end I decided to try ice and gem effects for the first time.
They look a bit rough but I think it fits the overall theme.

Board Game: Tail Feathers
Last of the Tail Feathers for the entry. I have a group shot but I really like the Bluejay the most out of them, it is very vibrant and shows up against the darker colours of the hook beaks and starlings. The paints are all Vallejo brushed on with some NMM attempt that came out a little to grey when I was hoping for polished silver.

Figure is Jyn Odan, a hero character from Star Wars: Imperial Assault. I decided to revisit painting the core set since my original efforts no longer match up with my newer pieces (better materials, better equipment, better technique, definitely more practice). Also, with Rogue One in theaters, it seemed appropriate to feature a wily female protagonist. I had at least another 20 photos, but they didn't make it into the final edit.

I apologize for the poor lighting/photography, but this was my very first attempt at painting miniatures... and painted 100 to boot. Even though I pale in comparison to you painting veterans, I hope to get some good advice and continue this endeavor addiction.

Board Game: Mechs vs. Minions

I used 6 different Americana multi-surface craft paints with only yellow from Army Painter. I sealed them by brushing on Minwax PolyShades to give them the detailed look.

I would like to give kudos to bumyong who inspired me to paint these miniatures using his assembly line technique.

I couldn't find an entry for "Armorcast" so I used "Reaper Miniatures" instead.

This is an Armorcast Robot Townie miniature with an Armorcast base, painted to look like a certain popular cartoon space captain:

From gallery of Autoduelist

From gallery of Autoduelist

The paint job looks deceptively simple. It's a lot of work adding black lines of the proper width with a fine brush; and it requires a little creativity to decide what needs shading and what doesn't to remain true to the source material.

I think I reached my goal of painting something that looks like a 2-D cartoon brought to life in 3-D. It doesn't look out of place with miniatures from other genres if you wanted to do an outer-space themed mashup (Star Trek, Star Wars), while still staying true to its roots.

Shadow Effigy (animated ninja dollninja) from Wyrd Miniatures' Malifaux second edition. Line is 32mm heroic, though this particular figure is roughly 2/3 the size of human sized figures in the line.

Army Painter paints and washes, with Vallejo Game Ink Yellow. Quick thoughts about the process in the spoiler:

Spoiler (click to reveal)
I bought AP Wolf Grey (blue on the model) on a whim and wanted to use it. Figured I'd use red and yellow alongside it to get that gaudy 90's Space Wolf Space Marines colour scheme going. I've got poor taste like that sometimes

Yellow was done using water thinned Vallejo ink over AP Skeleton Bone (lightly yellow-ish beige colour). Shaded carefully with AP Soft Tone, which in retrospect made it far too dirty for my liking. It looks ok on the table, but I definitely need to work on my yellows.

Technically not my best, but I'm happy how he turned out. Red in particular. Overall I just really like how bright and colourful the little chap is.

So I am flying rebels in the Corellion Conflict campaign for Star Wars Armada, that means digging deep and painting up rebel ships... This is an MC30C torpedo/scout frigate. Unfortunately it didn't make my list but I rather like the paint job, if minimalist. It is about 3-4" long, 1/2" deep for scale, a small base ship.

I primed the figure with mourning fang brown. Used a watered down brown wash. Then used tau light orche as a main base leaving all the darker brown in the cracks...then used flayed flesh for all the skin highlighting. I often use the brush on ardcoat with their washes to make it more subtle and less shiny. Then i used the dark sepia form secret weapon to blend the dark areas into the primary skin, just in the cracks

Oh I almost forgot entering the contest this month.

Board Game: Kingdom Death: Monster – Dragon King Expansion

Here's the Dragon King, Tyrant form, for Kingdom Death: Monster.

Painted with Minitaire paint (for the airbrushed parts) and Citadel paints for the rest. He's 35mm in scale.
