It hit over 38 degrees outside as gamers in Perth gathered to play games. See what hit the table and add what you played.

Ian and I had a quick match of this interesting little 2 player game from the designer of Arboretum.

One player plays as Jack, and the other the Giant and the players take turns trying to manoeuvre cards around the table for Jack to either climb a beanstalk and steal some treasure or for the giant to find the words fee fi fo fum and have a delicious crunchy Jack snack.

Jack and the giant have very different options when it comes to manipulating the table, Jack does lots of little actions whereas the Giant typically does one large action.

I pulled ahead getting two of the three treasures rather quickly but as the game progresses with less and less cards for Jack to hide amongst the game gets harder and harder. Ian's giant managed to bait me into one of two ways of crushing my bones and that was the game.

Ian taught Leah and I this one from Mac Gerdts, the designer of Concordia.

There are a lot of parallels in the game but ultimately you're attempting to explore the new world while building up industry along the way.

The game was a lot of fun and while I don't think I like it as much as Concordia I would still very happily play again. The game went on a little longer than it should have as Leah and I were both new to the game but the scores in the end were pretty respectable with Ian taking out the win. Leah and her lust for those 200 gold coins locked away 2nd place.

I taught Ian, Leah and Robin this fun deck building game about stealing treasure from a dragon.

The game is really a race as the first player to either die, or steal a treasure and exit the castle above the dragons dungeon will start a clock. The players still below then have 3 turns to get out of the dungeon or at least above ground so they can be rescued by the villagers.

The deck building is reasonably straight forward but still rewards setting up good combinations of cards. It will also punish not investing in the three currencies of experience, movement, and combat (most of the time).

Some of the cards have a negative effect called "Clank". When you gain clank you add a cube of your colour to a common pool. When the market is refilled of cards a the end of a turn if a dragon symbol appears all of the cubes from the Clank pool are put into a bag which also contains some neutral dragon cubes. The current ire of the dragon determines how many cubes are pulled out of the bag and if a player colour comes out, that cube is now damage taken by that player. If it's a black cube (the dragon) the cube is now removed from the bag and not returned. As the game progresses the number of black cubes in the bag dwindles, while the number of cubes being drawn increases.

The tension of the cube draw and the race like nature of the competition with the other players ia fantastic combination. A game I will happily teach and play anytime.

After dinner, Grug, Leah, Ian and I sat down to play this Antoine Bauza game about exploring the ocean.

It was quick and pretty easy to learn but while I would play again I probably won't be grabbing this one (which is normally a safe bet for an Antoine Bauza game).

Ian and Leah taught me Troyes, a game I've been meaning to play for some time.

I really enjoyed the game overall but it's yet another one of those games that ends just as you're getting going. I would definitely play again.

Tim, Ian, Jason, Billy and I sat down to play this great auction/tile placement game from Alexander Pfister (Broom Service, Mombasa, Great Western Trail).

Ian, Leah, Grug and I tried out this reimplementation of Tortoise and Hare. It was good fun but I personally don't think they modernised the game enough. The movement and bonuses/actions for landing on spaces was great but the deck of cards was too swingy for my liking.
