Jan 23 - Feb 5, 2017

Two weeks ago I played no games at all, which is why I skipped this list last Monday. Just a lot of long commutes and difficult work. Which is why the following week was so much better. We had another Light/Short game night, and it was another good one. Kind of like with family gaming, it's taken me a little while to find the right collection of games for that group. Best is to have a small stable of games that we know already, but that requires some weeks of experimenting with titles that have to be taught first. I need to remember this for after I return to California.

This was actually our closer for the night, but I'm leading with it in this geeklist because it was so successful. To me, the Timeline games take the idea behind Wits & Wagers, or Fauna/Terra, and boil it down as far as it can go. That is, they're all trivia games where you don't have to be right, just "right enough." While there's more to think about (even some tactics) in those other games, Timeline's great strength is that it has an effortless scoring system. You don't even notice it, which is ideal.

The previous superstar game from Light/Short game night, I made sure to bring it again. The fact that it plays up to six was a big advantage, since we started with four and then added two more people before I'd finished the simple rules. This time we DID end the game suddenly with a connection to Marseille, which I saw coming and was able to win just by having the most shares. (Well, they were good shares, but I've found in quick games that almost ANY shares are better than holding less than the maximum count.) This may be an evergreen game for our group.

I really enjoy this--always have--but I'm holding back on a star or two because I can see that it's at the limit of what this group enjoys playing. Which goes to show the SdJ jury that pushed it into the Kenner category was right. It's not too complicated, but there's a lot going on, between the iconography and the multi-dimensional scoring.

This should be a better game for our group, but I can tell my wife (my most important gaming partner!) is hanging on by a thread with this one. It's simple, so she can take her turn and move on, but she doesn't "get" it. At first I thought it's because we kind of skimmed over the Godzilla-style monster movie theme (and those are films she didn't watch as a kid anyway). That may be it--you either get & enjoy the geek theme, or you don't. I'm also cooling off on the gameplay a bit. I've won more than my fair share of games by ruthlessly going for 3's and then into Tokyo to take me over the top for points. The cards seem like they'd add good flavor, but the game is over before they really make an impact. (Nor would I want the game to last much longer.)

This wasn't part of game night. In fact, it was an online game with friends. Special mention here, though, because my opinion of this one continues to rise. In this case, I tried a new (for me) strategy. I built almost nothing, discarding card like crazy to build a warchest of resources. Not really a warchest, though, since there's so little direct conflict. The limited building I did was some point-scoring ships, and a single temple for bonus points. Then I scored all five of the commodity majority bonuses at the end, and won by a single point.
