Last year, my company bought us a new toy - a 3D printer (MakerGear M2). Over the past year+ I've been finding models (and making a few of my own) to enhance/pimp out some games.

This list is some of the various things I've printed out and why (and maybe a few TODO items that caught my eye).

Based on my blog post for PunchBoardMedia.com and on Things of No Interest

I enjoy painting as one of the things I do to pimp games, so not everything I've printed is a direct enhancement for a specific game. In this case, I found a paint brush rack - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1294085 . This little beauty holds my brushes, and keeps them such that it is easy to see which brush I want and also hold those extra tools - exacto knives, putty tools, etc.

Boxes! Replacement boxes are an easy thing to print off. Here is a box (the files for which are at - http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1013966 )

The nice part of custom boxes are that they take up a little less space than the original box and have wells for all the parts. True, the instructions don't fit here, but for a game like this, I don't really care. (I checked, they could fit if I folded them and didn't mind the lid sitting up slightly - or if I adjusted the lid to be slightly taller it could accommodate them).

This particular box is cool because it has slots for the card stand and a tunnel for the timer.

There are tons of organizers for this game, but the one I wanted was something that would hold all of it in one place.

It holds cards, dice, coins - everything but the instructions. Including expansions.

At some point, you can just have too much Carc. Especially annoying is when the tableau gets moved/bumped. You know what I'm talking about. These trays solve that problem. Each tray holds nine tiles and locks onto the trays adjacent to it. No more sliding tiles. Unexpected benefit - the whole tableau can move. That one player at one end of the table with short arms? You can slide the whole thing in their direction to make life easier. The map grows in an odd direction? Rotate all of it or slide it to make space.

SUPER EXTRA BENEFIT:

These trays work exceptionally well for Isle of Skye: From Chieftain to King! The tiles are the exact same size as the Carc tiles, so each player can use these for their individual maps and move them aside during the auctions or whatever.

I think this is a pretty good two player game, but I kind of dislike the setup/layout. When I acquired this, the first thing I did was go look to see if someone had designed a tray(s) for the card layout and sure enough, someone did. Honestly, I feel like this makes the game faster since we are not dorking around with the layout the whole game.

(I know, as soon as I took the picture, I realized that the red settlement was wrong, but that wasn't the point of the picture...)

I'm not the biggest Catan fan out there, but my daughter loves the game. While gaming at a friend's place a while back, she had a chance to play with the uber nice 3D Catan set that was released a number of years back. It is nice. But I wasn't going to pay hundreds of dollars for it. 3D printing? Well, that made it a reasonable project. I found all the files (and more) on Thingiverse and collected them into a project along with the counts / basic instructions for making a 6-player 3D Catan (the big commercial set is only 4 player). 6-Player Catan Set

After printing all the parts, there were still things to do.
1) Painting. I paint minis, so this was no stretch for me. Airbrushed most of the pieces in some base color, used some washes and drybrushing and a little details. All in acrylic paint and then sealed with a matte clear sealer. The water pieces were all printed with a translucent blue and weren't painted other than the non-water details.
2) Magnetize! I ordered a bazillion little magnets, printed the magnet bases and loaded them up and attached them to the tiles. The whole thing stays together, which is just awesome.
3) It needs a case!. This part is still a work in progress. I bought a wooden artist's box from Hobby Lobby and am printing the racks for holding the tile sets. It is a little tight, but it is coming along nicely.

For those that care - this is not a complete game. You still need the cards and such from the game, but all the wooden bits from the original are going in my bits box.

I can't believe this never occurred to me until recently. I have a small collection of card holders for regular card games and such. I hate messy discard piles and so forth and this game has piles of cards. I thought they might be a bit small after I printed them, but was surprised to realize that only the structures deck was maybe a bit tall for the rack.

For Descent, I have printed a ton of card boxes.

For the large cards: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1779236

I scaled down those boxes for the market decks.

Awesome 4X kind of space game with lots of parts? Cool, but you really need some of this stuff (you just didn't know you did).

Trays. Much like the Carc ones above, these provide the same benefits - slide the whole maps around the table to make things easier for people to reach. Keep the map from getting jostled and having to "fix" it all. There are a couple of different versions. I printed out the ones that have puzzle like connectors, but there are also versions that can house magnets.

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:279873

For the individual players, this little beauty is ever so essential - a cube "tray". They are even pretty simple to fill. Dump the cube pile over the tray and slide it back and forth a little - for the most part, the cubes kind of sort themselves into the slots.

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:236748

Most folks probably have a plano box or other solution in place for the parts, but these trays are well done as well. It makes passing around the common tiles much simpler. I wish the designer had made a lid for them too.

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:279910

These are pure pimping - just for the cool factor. 3D printed Orbitals to show off.

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1754919

Thingiverse has a number of other items that can be found to help organize the stacks of space hexes, individual player parts (I found it easier to just have them bagged), etc.

Sometimes you just need to print a whole game out. I heard about this game after the Kickstarter started landing. After reading about it, I guessed there was probably some models for the game online and sure enough, there was a full set that was out there. This particular set is even shape friendly for the sight impaired.
