I taught this to a group of both newcomers and WABA members. Bernard, Maddy, Casandra, Vanessa and one other (claire..? Sorry I warned you I was terrible with names!) all played this simple auction / stock game that plays like a meatier version of No Thanks! The group played it twice in a row.

Maddy (again, apologies if I got your name wrong!) had to leave, and I thought the remainder of the group this great route building game from HABA. Everyone uses the same tiles to get their explorers through the jungle and into the temples, but everyone always ends up taking different paths, and facing the difficult decision of when to sacrifice a tile to move your explores at different points throughout the game. I left this group to it and went to play Clank!, so hopefully they all enjoyed it

Warren, Leah, David and myself played this great deck builder, in which you're trying to delve into a dungeon to steal the dragon's treasure, and get out before you get eaten. The game has a great sense of tension as the more valuable treasures are deeper into the dungeon, so getting out will be more difficult.

This time I was the one to run out first, starting the countdown to the end of the game. Leah ended up as dragon feed while David sat by the exit for a few turns, risking his life to wait for a few beneficial cards to appear in his hand. The risk paid off and David won a pretty clear victory. Still enjoying this and I'm looking forward to trying the more advanced side of the board next time.

Next up the same group played this light and easy card game from Steve Finn (designer of Biblios). Players are trying to collect the best sets of herbs to pot in their four different pots, each one of which wants different arrangements (all the same, all different, pairs etc.). The trick is that some of the cards you'll want to use to pot are in the Community Garden in the centre of the table, and are available for anyone to use. This means that timing is important, because if you wait too long, another player might grab the cards you were intending to use. I can't remember who won this, only that it wasn't me, and it wasn't Warren

Tim joined David, Leah and myself for a quick game of this before dinner. This is a game of manipulating the winning condition of the game (dictated by a card in the centre) to allow you to stay in the game (if you're not winning the game at the end of your turn, you're eliminated). I believe I was the first to be eliminated and that David ended up winning.

After dinner Christophe taught myself and Craig this game by Alban Viard, and Celine joined us (who had played previously). This is a very unique game, and the way to play well really didn't even vaguely click for me until the very end of the game. Essentially you're using cards to build tram lines, construct buildings and move passengers around. Moving passengers over your own tram lines gives you money (which is pretty tight) as well as victory points, but you can pay another player to use their lines as well. The destination of the passenger will have varying effects, such as giving you new cards, money, stress (!). The most unique aspect of the game is the bizarre and brutal auction, which I won't describe here because it's nutty.
All in all I liked the game, even if I did appallingly. Christophe ended up winning.

Alicia, Elaine, Rob and myself played this very different version of the TTR stable.

It was a first time play for me and I really enjoyed it. We played it twice. Due to people not watching my frantically reducing pile of carriages I came second the first time, and first the second time.

It was Alicia's first time playing any of the Ticket to Rides and she enjoyed it too.

With one more joining us this was our last game for the day, 5 player.

With a few mechanisms locked from the start this was a tricky board. I think Rob won?

13. Board Game: Relic Runners [Average Rating:6.65 Overall Rank:1593]
Adrian, Amie, Ben, Scott and myself played this game from days of wonder. It has (relatively) simple rules but still takes effort to plan ahead to maximise points and figure out what bonus' to go for. I got one good run between idols in but that was me peaking too early; then the boys took over. Can't remember who won though?

14. Board Game: Letters from Whitechapel [Average Rating:7.43 Overall Rank:213]
Played this hidden movement game for the first time in a while with Adrian, Amie, Ben and Scott played the first night. I volunteered to be Jack and fuelled my blood with anxiety of the thought of getting caught. Had a really great first night; used up all 15 moves to get home but spent the last 5/6 trying to ensure the detectives picked up a clue I left to mislead them. They did! The second night the detectives followed my every move and I was sure I was going to get caught. They joked about making an arrest on 48... I am so glad they didn't! and then I spent much of the night getting home but still trying to leave clues that pointed in the wrong direction to my home. It worked again! By now the detectives were certain my home was in the upper right hand side of the board and this allowed me to make the third night a quiet one. I killed two and disappeared. Leaving not many clues at all. On the final night I killed one away from my home. Then spent the next 11 moves waiting for someone to find a clue until I just headed back home...

The detectives said they enjoyed the game as much as I did and that's the best result to hope for!

15. Board Game: Mint Tin Pirates [Average Rating:7.52 Overall Rank:4234]
Adrian encourages Amie and I to play this cute little two player game over dinner time. Amie was a more fearsome pirate then I first turning my ship into a ghost ship and then blasting it to pieces using numerous successful cannons. Now my poor little pirates will spend eternity in Davy Jones's Locker!

16. Board Game: Catan [Average Rating:7.19 Overall Rank:329] [Average Rating:7.19 Unranked]
Adrian, Amie, Ben and I played settler's of catan after dinner. Whilst I enjoyed expanding my settlements and building cities over them without any access to sheep or clay the entire game I failed to keep a close eye on Ben and Adrian who were battling for first place. Amie, being first player, was a little trapped with her early choices and struggled to expand or collective enough resources to upgrade. Adrian had a sneaky win where he was able to claim biggest army one turn after taking biggest road as well as having a victory point card in hand! I thought we had more game when it ended!

17. Board Game: Race for the Galaxy [Average Rating:7.76 Overall Rank:50]
Adrian, Amie and I played this game after deciding not to go home to bed like we should have! It is the first time the game has clicked for me and made sense the whole way through. I finally got my machine working for me and only had to use two explore cards the entire game. Amie also had an efficient little machine but Adrian got stuck early on on non-complementary cards and so just kept building military settlements and small developments. Final scores: Amy 42, Adrian 22, Amie 34. Yay for understanding finally!!!

We were about to start teaching ourselves Small World when Godlief came past and offered to show us how to play it using his copy of the game (more / different characters). Turns out he'd left it at home so he asked if we wanted to have a go at Zombicide, which we did.

The game probably went on longer than it needed to due to my son Seth (8yo) thinking he would best help us tackle the epidemic by keeping the coolest weapons as opposed to the most practical weapons. At the end of the day we fought valiantly, assisted by Godlief's patient leadership, but were eventually over-run by the walking dead.

I headed past a table where Robin, Harmony and Karl were trying to puzzle out their first game of Pandemic and thought they could use the little experience I have with it. After a few initial hiccups, we got our team jetting across the board desperately fixing diseases. After two epidemics in short order, Europe looked set to fall to the nightmarish blue disease with an almost guaranteed chain of outbreaks about to occur, but lucky card draw and fiendishly clever plays by the Researcher and Dispatcher saw us curing our final diseases just in the nick of time.

I taught this to Robin, Martin and Candace, which marks approximately the thousandth time I've taught this fantastic game. Scoring was tight for most of the game, with a well covered board and a real leader only emerged during end game scoring. There was some canny play from some of the newbies, but experience won the day in the end.
